For any lurkers or readers who don’t check the message board on the regular, I’ve been asked to announce a meetup in Denver for this Saturday.
Details: “This Saturday, March 31st, at 1 pm – meeting at the Uptown Tavern on 17th St.”
Any other meetups y’all want me to announce on the “main page”? Shoot me an email and I’ll be happy to get the word out.

Thanks Wendy!
Now you all have no excuse to miss it 🙂

Boom! See ya there! I will probably be wearing business casual clothes because I have a stupid networking thing in the morning.
rachel March 27, 2012, 4:19 pm
Hm, maybe you can teach me how to network.
Iwannatalktosampson March 27, 2012, 4:34 pm
It’s pretty much the most awkward thing ever. You act like you just want to make “contacts” and get assistance with your resume and stuff. But really you want to know if they know of a job in the area of law you want to work in. So it’s dumb and feels super fake and forced. I always want to get happy hour but usually I try to suggest classy coffee instead.

Networking absolutely is fake and forced. haha. They are being polite to find out who you know and if you are a worthwhile business “friend” to have.
Iwannatalktosampson March 27, 2012, 5:24 pm
Totally. But I just wake up everyday and look in the mirror and say, “networking is my passion.”

I love networking. Here’s how I approach networking events: this is an apportunity to drink with new friends. That takes the edge off things, makes people more comfortable, and hence you become more approachable. Just forget about work and careers and blah blah blah. Just make friends. Talk about tv shows. Talk about travel. Talk about how the merlot is so good when it hits your lips! Then people want to be your friends and then they want to tell you about career opportunities. That’s my 2 cents about that. And frankly, if they don’t like you because of the tv shows you’re talking about, then you don’t want to work with those boring fake corporatey people anyway. (Take this with a grain of salt – none of my networking has landed me a job yet. But I have met friends!)

And too bad this meetup isn’t happening when I drive through. Maybe we can have another meet up then?
Rachel March 27, 2012, 9:54 pm
When are you coming out? I’d be down for another one probably, I usually enjoy having excuses to drive down to Denver.
And the problem with trying to network for a job in science is you have to actually like talk science with people, and sound smart doing it. I’m always afraid of sounding stupid by asking the wrong question that I end up not talking much.

Oooh, maybe I will go to this if I can find a sitter…

Hope it was fun! I had to wait for a guy to come and bid on building our deck…

That sounds like a less fun way to spend a Saturday. Hopefully you can make it next time!
