Dear Wendy

Program Note: Site Redirect

Site-MaintenanceA bunch of you have called my attention to the redirects you’re experiencing to other sites when you click on a headline link. I’m very sorry about this and after having my developer look into it and researching the problem myself, I’ve determined it’s an issue with Google Adsense and I am looking into what I can do on my end to stop the redirects from happening on DW. An immediate solution would be to remove the Adsense ads I have in place, but I rely on that revenue to help keep the lights on around here (and after some pretty high website-related expenses, both expected and unexpected, over the last six weeks, I really can’t afford to cut my revenue at all right now). I am hopeful Google will fix the issue quickly or that I will find a stopgap solution on my own (like banning the sites some of you have been redirected to from my Adsense account; please feel free to update that list in the comments). Just know that I am aware of the problem and I am actively seeking a solution that won’t cut my revenue in half (but I’ll remove the Adsense ads, at least temporarily, if I can’t figure out another solution). In the meantime, thank you for your patience and understanding!

Interesting. I have never been redirected to a different link. After reading about this, I have been clicking on many ads (including the redirect links) trying to be redirected, but I cannot make it happen. Could a lowered security setting in a browser allow this to happen? Or a non-updated operating system, browser or Java? (Although, Google Adsense shouldn’t allow this to happen in the first place.)

We keep all of our security up to date. I tend to have the most trouble while using internet explorer and wasn’t having much trouble while using google chrome but it is now happening in chrome. I’m not sure about Firefox. I also go incognito or private browsing because I don’t like them to put cookies on my computer. I don’t think it is any of their business. They will put up a request asking for them to know my location and when I say to block the request I always have a problem. It is like they are retaliating against me for saying no.

It doesn’t happen when clicking on ads, I never click on ads. It happens when clicking on regular links on the site. The click to continue link on the front page under the new article will often go to an ad instead of the full article. Also, when clicking on links in the forums it will get hijacked and sometimes even when clicking on reply.
