Reader of the Week: Meet AKchic

There was such an overwhelming response when I asked readers to introduce themselves on a weekend open thread that I decided to give you all a weekly column to do just that. I’ve always said this site wouldn’t be what it is without the engagement and participation of its readers and this column is the place to learn more about who you are what makes you tick. After the jump, let’s meet AKchic.

1. What’s your name, age and whereabouts?

Online I’m AKchic. Always. Have been since I was 16. Jessica is my real name. I’ll skip the last name because I’ve had three so far in my life, and I’d prefer to keep the current one semi-anonymous. I’m, uh… (quickly does the math) 28. I was born, raised and live in Anchorage, AK. I’ll die and haunt Alaska later.

2. What’s your relationship status?

Currently I am in a relationship. Been divorced twice. I don’t have any illusions about any relationship lasting, but I’ll enjoy this one as long as it lasts.

3. How do you spend your weekdays?

I spend my weekdays working a (normally) 8-5 administrative job in the substance abuse rehabilitation field. My specialty (now that my position is getting reworked) will be with the prison programs almost exclusively. That is actually fine with me. I’ve been with the prison programs since they started 2 ½ years ago and I’ve worked for the Dept. of Corrections prior to my working here.

4. How do you spend your free time?

What free time? When I’m not at work, I’m at home where I have four boys to wrangle and wrestle into some semblance of decent adults.

5. What are your top likes and dislikes?

Likes: Reading. I’m a self-admitted bibliophile. love sci-fi, fantasy (of certain kinds), some horror, mysteries, supernatural, etc. This also translates well into the tv/movie realm as well. Doctor Who, Torchwood, a few SyFy (I still don’t like the name change) shows like Alphas, Warehouse 13, Eureka, Haven, Being Human, as well as Big Bang Theory, NCIS, Criminal Minds, CSI, etc. I like to cook/bake when I have time. Guns, zurvivalism (yes, zombie survivalism), and a few other things.

Dislikes: Some of my idiosyncracies include: Laundry has to be folded just right and if it isn’t, I can’t help but go behind someone and refold. It’s an OCD compulsion, and I can’t help it. I can’t stand having to repeat myself to some people. The way our justice system continues to fail us in AK, meatloaf, green beans, bear crap at the bottom of your stairs first thing in the morning when it’s still dark out. People who insist on telling you how to raise your kids when they have none themselves. Anti-gun zealots.

6. What’s the best relationship advice you’ve ever been given?

It’s okay to walk away. My grandpa told me that during my first marriage. It was the best advice I’ve ever gotten from anyone, and the best advice I have ever listened to.

7. What’s the best relationship lesson you’ve ever learned?

People don’t change just because they are in a relationship. If they are dicks when they are single, they are going to be dicks when they are in a relationship. It may take a while to get past the “honeymoon phase,” but eventually, they will treat you like they treat everyone else. You decide how you want to be treated by how you react to that.

8. Besides DearWendy.com, what are some of your favorite websites?

Cabinfeverak, www.thinkgeek.com, www.magicalomaha.com, www.amazon.com,

Series 6? The one that was just released yesterday? Jealous. I had mine on pre-order (dvd) on amazon and it hasn’t arrived yet.

You’re the only other person I know who watches Torchwood! Love that show. Every show I like gets cancelled though, hopefully not this one!

Nice to meet you! I love how willing you are to share personal experiences in your comments. And although I don’t always agree with your opinions I am always glad you share them because they are always based on simple rational thoughts. So thanks for commenting!

Nice to meet you! …your bear crap at the bottom of the steps dislike makes my chicken crap at the bottom of the stairs dislike seem…um…miniscule! LOL! 🙂 I like the walk away advice…I got that the day of my first wedding (and I should have taken it then instead of 7 years in)

I love Being Human! (Both versions of it) and I’m a huge fan of ThinkGeek. That’s where many of my friends and family get their Christmas presents from. When I was in 5th grade I did a project about Alaska and decided I wanted to move there. I have since changed my mind and want to go the other direction (Arizona), but for now I just sit where I am. My landlord lives in AK and loves it.

Nice to meet you! 4 boys are a lot of work. I’ve always wanted to have a lot of sons. I grew up with 3 brothers. I love your comments – they are very well thought out. And kudos to your grandpa for the advice. I also like your relationship advice that you gave about someone not changing because they are in a relationship – it’s very true. When someone shows you who they are believe them the first time.

*laugh* I check back every now and then and comments are scattered. 5, 21, 11. Sheesh. It’s like a lottery ticket.

Hope the site issues get fixed soon. Hard to have conversations when they keep getting erased.

Yay for Alaska! I went camping there for 3 weeks with my sister after my freshman year of college. It was the trip of a lifetime! and props for using the word bibliophile, cause I’m a librarian. and a bibliophile as well.

I have thought about becoming a librarian. I was seriously tempted. Unfortunately, I know what happens whenever I walk into a library. I read. I try to re-organize my personal library and get side-tracked and start reading. I knew that it wouldn’t be a good “job”. Doing book reviews, however – THAT might fit, but most people don’t actually “read”. They’d rather wait for the movie. Bilge. Complete codswallop.

i am so the same way about laundry being folded right… it drives me absolutely crazy when anyone else folds my clothes. and they have to be folded! i hate hanging stuff up in a closet.

    • AKchic November 22, 2011, 8:18 pm

I have certain things that are folded, and certain things that are hanging in my closet. And they have to be hanging just right on the hanger. If they aren’t, I go back and fix them. They cannot hang sloppily on a hanger.

What I’d like to know is how my cat manages to get her fur on my clothes that are hanging in the closet… they weren’t ON the clothes when I put them on the hanger.

haha… you sound like me and my boyfriend put together!

he has to hang everything up (works out well- he gets the closet, i get the dresser)… but it to the point where they have to be all facing the same direction, all in the right catagories (long sleeve, short sleeve, polos, ect).. im sure if he wasnt pretty much color blind they would be arranged by colors to!!

oh and about the cat hair- i know.. i understand. lol

All right book-lovers – Anne McCaffrey passed away today –

I’m sure the Dragons of Pern mourned her passing just as they did MasterHarper Robinton – doncha think? A fitting tribute, to be sure.
