Reader of the Week: Meet Firegirl32

There was such an overwhelming response when I asked readers to introduce themselves on a weekend open thread that I decided to give you all a weekly column to do just that. I’ve always said this site wouldn’t be what it is without the engagement and participation of its readers and this column is the place to learn more about who you are what makes you tick. After the jump, let’s meet Firegirl32.

1. What’s your name, if you’re willing to share), age and whereabouts?

My name is Jolene, but you know me (maybe?) as Firegirl32. I am 34 years old and from a really small town in Wisconsin, near UWStout, if you’re familiar with the area.

2. What’s your relationship status?

I am happily involved! I have been with my boyfriend for a little over 2.5 years.

3. How do you spend your weekdays?

By day, I work for a utility company. I write human interest stories for our trade magazine, I organize and write content for our newsletter and dole out energy efficiency advice and figure out high bill complaints. Oh, and “other duties as assigned.”

4. How do you spend your free time?

I spend my free time with my son and boyfriend, cooking, entertaining friends, working in the garden, and working on my book. Just for fun, I got two chickens this year, to eat bugs. As it turns out, they make great pets! They are very entertaining, and will eat out of your hand. We also camp a lot during the summer. Generally, the outdoors is where you will find us. Playing in the pool, riding 4-wheeler, snowmobiling, sledding, and having bonfires are just some of our favorites! Life is good, and I plan on enjoying every day.

5. What are your top likes and dislikes?

I love food. I will try anything once! I even ate little squids with their little suckers on their feet in Vegas once. I love Las Vegas, in moderation. I like great wait staff, customer service, country music, and surprises.

I dislike the news (it totally depresses me whenever I watch it), people who don’t take responsibility for their actions (I get a lot of calls from people who don’t think they should have to pay their bills. Seriously. It totally pisses me off.), and negative people.

6. What’s the best relationship advice you’ve ever been given?

Get your own tube of toothpaste (From my mom). If something your partner does irritates you, don’t set them up for failure. If you realize every morning you get irritated because your SO squeezes the toothpaste tube from the middle, get your own tube. Letting little things like that sabotage your relationship is ridiculous. A close second on advice is: Stop and think: will it matter tomorrow? Or five years from now? If not, for fuck’s sake, let it go.

7. What’s the best relationship lesson you’ve ever learned?

Just because it’s comfortable doesn’t mean it’s right. I did that. I got married because the relationship was comfortable, but I knew deep down that it wasn’t right for me. So after 10 years it went down in a ball of flames and a divorce. I am much wiser now, and I know that settling doesn’t have to be an option. It’s okay to walk away if the relationship isn’t right for you.

8. Besides DearWendy.com, what are some of your favorite websites?

The Blogess, who is HILARIOUS. I also love to distract myself with Guyspeak, damnyouautocorrect, and my totally guilty pleasure (yes, I will admit it here) is TMZ.

    Nice to meet you =).
I had a pet chicken for a while when I was six. Then she “went away to live in the country with her chicken friends”.

I’m very curious as to which town in Wisconsin you’re from. Of course I understand if you don’t want to disclose, but I live in Minnesota and travel through Wisconsin often as my boyfriend lives there! 🙂

Nice to meet you. I just drove near you on my way from Chicago to Minneapolis for the holidays. We took a litle detour off I-94 and explored LaCrosse – very cute town. Some Wisconsin towns have the most charming “downtowns” — an intersection or two. They all seem to have sweet cafes and antique shops that are fun to explore. I LOVE THOSE PLACES!

Me too! We have a cafe near us that is in the basement of the village hall…The. Best. Pie. Ever. 🙂

Funny, when you said best “pie” ever, I assumed you meant pizza. And I thought, what kind of cafe sells good pizza?! Then I got it. By “pie” you meant pie. As in pie. I’ve been off work too long. It’s hard to use my brain again.

It’s nice to meet you! I’ve always been curious about raising chickens as pets because I saw a documentary about chickens once. There was a story of one chicken who had really voluminous feathers and looked really different from all the other chickens in the coop, so it was ostracized and the other chickens would harass it everyday. Then when it became time for that chicken to become a mother, it was obvious that chicken was really devoted to her offspring. She saved one of her chick’s life when a hawk tried to attack by literally lying down on top of it so the hawk would kill her instead of her chick. Luckily the hawk couldn’t do any harm and just flew away. After I saw that I never thought about chickens the same way again.

I love mine. I have the rooster – Gilligan (he’s kinda skinny and mottled – not quite right looking). And two hens, a dark one named Mary Ann and a white one named Mrs. Howell. 🙂

My roomie/good friend’s Mom raises chickens, mostly for eggs, but also because she just likes it. They are truly cage-free, so unfortunately have been subject to coyote attacks… but I think they have such happy little chicken lives just wandering around where they please.

She had this one batch, that for whatever reason, she had handled a whole lot when they were baby chicks. They were extremely friendly and always seemed like they loved to be pet. I know people think they are really stupid… but they can also be so sweet! I think it is great you are raising some as pets 🙂

Nice to meet you. I could never own a chicken….I enjoy eating them too much and I would feel conflicted to have affections for something that has to watch me eat its own kind….that’s like man-bear-pigs keeping you as a pet and eating your neighborhood for dinner.

That’s kind of funny – because when we have wings for dinner my son always says, “Don’t tell the chickens!” He likes them a lot. And we just know we can’t eat ours. 🙂

Nice to meet you Jolene! It sounds like we have a ton in common. What kind of 4 wheeler do you ride? I have a 2004 Yamaha Raptor 660 at the moment, but it’s a little bit broken since my boyfriend rode it. I still miss the 2001 Honda Rancher 4×4 I used to have though…planning to get another one of those asap.

We have a Rancher! And a Rubicon. I love it. Getting out and riding is one of my favorite things. Jon likes to just tool along. I like a bit more speed. Lucky for us both we like the mud and do our best to find that first!

Lucky! I absolutely love riding; it is the best stress relief ever. Funny, my boyfriend and I are opposite of you guys. He has to go as fast as possible EVERYWHERE while I prefer to just tool along and hit some big mud holes. Consequently, he has run himself over twice while I never have (yet). He is really into 3 wheelers while I prefer 4x4s. He just got a GoPro helmet-cam for Christmas so next time he runs himself over at least I will get to watch it on video.
