Reader Recs: Absurdfiction’s Picks

Dear Wendy readers are some of the most intelligent, stylish, super cool people around (it’s a proven fact), so it’s a no-brainer to feature some of their favorite products. Today’s recommendations comes from absurdfiction who lives in Raleigh, NC with her husband, their snuggly 60-lb lapdog, and their terrifying demon-cat. She loves advice columns, and she has been reading DW since The Frisky days. In her spare time, she loves reading, hiking, cooking, and drinking too much wine. Although she lives in the South, she hates hot weather, so she is ecstatic that fall is finally here! Keep reading for her recommendations, including the wedding gift she uses more than any other.

Vegetable Literacy by Deborah Madison
I get a CSA box delivered every week, and this book has been so awesome in helping me figure out how to use some of the more peculiar veggies I’ve gotten in my shares. There are really basic cooking instructions, as well as fancy-pants recipes, and everything I’ve tried has come out delicious!

 

Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips
I am the worst at keeping up with nail polish, so when I want to look well-manicured for more than five minutes, these strips are my go-to. They are easy to apply, they come in dozens of funky patterns, you don’t have to wait for them to dry, and they last for at least a week. In fact, I find that I have to bust out the nail polish remover only because they are growing out, not because they’re chipped. To help keep them going so long, I top them off with Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Top Coat, which is salon-quality but cheap!

 

Bag Balm Ointment
I have dry skin, and I’ve tried just about everything to keep it in check. Bag Balm is one of my favorite things, period. I use it on my hands, elbows, cat scratches, chapped lips, and even new tattoos. It was originally developed to soothe sore udders on dairy cows, and, incidentally, I’ve heard it’s great for nursing moms, too!

 

L.L. Bean Wicked Good Moccasins
I live in these slippers when I am at home. They keep your feet cozy and warm, and the natural shearling lining wicks moisture, so I can even get away with wearing them in summer (though it probably helps that I blast the A/C). My mom has had a similar pair from L.L. Bean for probably 30 years, so they are a worthwhile investment!

 

Pier1 Chalk Note Glassware
My husband and I got a set of the stemless wine glasses from this collection as a wedding gift, and we use them more than anything else we received! Since you can personalize each glass, they are perfect for entertaining. We like to try to outdo each other with goofy things to write or draw on them whenever we uncork a bottle of wine. They’re dishwasher safe, and the only drawback is that cold beverages like white wine may cause condensation to form and destroy your little masterpieces. [Amazon sells a similar set with a growler and pint glasses, fyi.]
