Reader Recs: Aya’s Faves

Dear Wendy readers are some of the most intelligent, stylish, super-cool people around (it’s a proven fact), so it’s a no-brainer to feature some of their favorite products. Many of the recommended products happen to be affiliate products, which means I’ll receive a commission on any click-throughs or purchases you make through the affiliate links. As always, I appreciate your support! Today’s recommendations come from a longtime lurker, who once upon a time commented as Aya. She’s a singer and mother in Champaign-Urbana who plans to make it to a Chicago meetup one day. Here are her recommendations, including the piece of jewelry she loves for combatting a bad habit she has.

You could say I’m a minimalist, or you could say I’m super lazy. These flats are super cute for work and comfortable. Best of all, they are waterproof, so no changing into rain boots or ruining leather flats in surprise showers.

Right now I have a natural color, but for a while I had purple, then blue, then teal hair. This conditioner will help maintain your hair’s unnatural shade as long as you keep using it. Bonus: it’s really moisturizing as well.

These are my favorite earrings. As their name implies, they are super light despite their size. I have a bad habit of fiddling with my jewelry, so I like the fact that there aren’t any pieces, like a post, for me to lose.

Mary Roach is my favorite author. I have read all six of her books, and I loved them all except Spook. She writes about the history of science in a funny and accessible way. Grunt is about military research, like how to develop a better uniform or shark repellent.

I don’t wear foundation; instead, I use this SPF 50 BB cream. Soon after I started using it, a coworker asked me what I was doing with my skin since, in her words, I was glowing.

Thanks, Aya!

If you have some products you’d like to recommend to the DW audience, shoot me an email at [email protected] with links to five recommendations. (Write “reader recs” in the subject line, please.) Your recommendations can be from any store or website, but they need to be accessible online. If your list is a good fit for the site, I’ll ask you to write a brief description of each item/explain what you love so much about it.

The only Mary Roach book I’ve read was Spook but I didn’t like it either, which is a bummer because the topic sounded really interesting. I’ve heard her other books are much better though so maybe I’ll check them out.

      I really loved Stiff.
I’m curious as to why you guys didn’t like Spook so much.

I’ll admit bias on my end, in that I don’t find the topic very interesting or believable. It may be wishful thinking on my part, but Roach didn’t seem to be that into it either.

I haven’t read Spook, but I was interested in reading it…but if it’s not that interesting, I’ll move onto something else.

I’ve only read Stiff but I didn’t enjoy her writing style. I felt like it was too much a book about Mary Roach researching her topic, than just the topic. But then I also could not get into The Girls (which is supposedly one of the hit books of the summer), so maybe it’s just me :p

We should have a Champaign-Urbana meet up!

While I do sing (in the shower, in the car), my bio was supposed to say single mother.
