Reader Recs: Shannon Shares Her Faves

It’s Donation Drive time again! We have an immediate — like very immediate — need for a new server. It won’t be cheap (best quote so far: $4200 for six months). Your donation will help purchase a new server that will accommodate DW’s growing traffic. Your donation will help ensure the continuation of this site. If you have ever considered donating, this is the time to do it (donate here). Goal is $7500 by next week. Since this morning, we’re over $2380 — around 28% to the goal. Thank you so much. And now to our regularly-scheduled programming:

unnamed-2New feature alert! Dear Wendy readers are some of the most intelligent, stylish, super cool people around (it’s a proven fact), so when a commenter suggested I create a regular feature for them to recommend some of their favorite products, it was a no-brainer. Today’s reader recs come from Shannon (aka “Shanshantastic”) who lives in South Euclid, Ohio, with her husband Brian, son Arthur, and two cats who would love to be in a “Cats of Dear Wendy” calendar. She enjoys cooking new recipes (and sending Brian to the store for obscure ingredients), reading and reviewing books, and causing mischief on Twitter. Her other awesome interest is meeting other DW-ers in person, so maybe a NEO meetup soon…? Keep reading for her favorite finds.

14024603_1207190027071. The Crock Pot lunch crock
One of my friends suggested the lunch crock to take healthy lunches to work and cook food slowly without having to put it in the microwave. I got it for Christmas and I use it every. single. day. (Other colors are available!).

311LE-IfzXL2. Mr. Coffee coffee mug warmer
I am notorious for getting into a project and forgetting to finish my coffee or tea, and then it’s cold and gross when I get back to it. This little gadget keeps the drink warmed through and doesn’t take up a lot of real estate wherever it’s plugged in. I’m thinking of getting one for every room of my house. 🙂

Unknown3. NARS lip gloss
This lip gloss is fantastic – not sticky or overly thick, and the colors are just gorgeous. I use Chihuahua (guava) over nearly every lipstick color I wear and it looks awesome.

save-as-draft-pb-2254. Save As Draft by Cavanaugh Lee (available in hardcover and for Kindle)
I write book reviews in addition to my day job(s) and this was the first book I reviewed. I love how Cavanaugh chronicles a love story using email, text, and social media because it really reflects how we live so much of our lives now!

Screen Shot 2014-02-23 at 9.12.13 AM5. This sweetheart dress from eShakti is adorable.
I ordered it and tried it on as soon as it came and I LOVE IT. eShakti does any level of customization that their customers want/need and the retro styles are absolutely adorable; plus, they’re always running a sale and they give gift coupons for your first (and often second) purchases – I got this dress for $10 ($20 with shipping) because of gift coupons!

Thanks for your recommendations, Shannon!

If you have some products you’d like to recommend to the DW audience, shoot me an email at wendy@dearwendy.com with links to five recommendations (write “reader recs” in the subject line, please). Your recommendations can be from any store or website, but need to be accessible online — and I would love it if at least two items could be found on Amazon where I am an affiliate. If your list is a good fit for the site, I’ll ask you to write a brief description of each item/ explain what you love so much about it.

I love NARS Chihuahua! The only problem is that the smell is a little strong.

I’d also like to be featured in a Cats of Dear Wendy calendar. I have two cats but they’d be willing to share a month.

How sticky is not too sticky and how smelly is a little strong? Smelly good? Smelly bad?

I thought the consistency was a little tacky rather than sticky, but the color is so amazing that I didn’t mind. The smell wasn’t good or bad and I don’t know how to describe it – it wasn’t perfumy or floral, I guess it just smelled like lip gloss? I’m really sensitive to smell though so it might not be a big deal to anyone else. And it didn’t stop me from wearing it a lot – the price did that. 🙂 It was $24 the last time I bought it. Now I stick with the “cheap” $15 Clinique chubby sticks.

      • lets_be_honest March 6, 2014, 3:41 pm

Oh the chubby sticks! Do you really like them? Are they lipsticky? I dont’ like lipstick and mostly use chapstick or not sticky lip gloss.

      • muchachaenlaventana March 6, 2014, 3:47 pm

I am cheap and don’t spend tons of $ on makeup but I love love love the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain. It has a lot of really pretty colors, is cheap and lasts a long time!

      • lets_be_honest March 6, 2014, 3:50 pm

I’ll have to try that. I like my lips pale though, which is guess is weird, so its hard to find a “color” that’s pale.

      • LlamaPajamas March 6, 2014, 4:37 pm

I’ll have to try that, mucha. I have an autoimmune disease that makes my mouth and eyes super dry so I rarely wear eye makeup, but I happily spend a lot of money on lip glosses and chap sticks that are extra moisturizing because my lips would be a mess otherwise. (Luckily I’ve never cared about eye makeup anyways because my mom is one of those women who won’t leave the house without makeup and I never want to be that self-conscious of my appearance. But that’s a whole other story.)

      • Ella_ March 6, 2014, 5:54 pm

I have one of the Revlon lacquer balms, a couple of the Cover Girl balm sticks, and two of the Rimmel ones and the Revlon one is my favorite! They have matte ones too, and a ton of colors, so I’m sure you could find a pale pink/nude color. A lot of drug stores have testers now, so you can see what they actually look like and not just guess from the color of the tube.

      • LlamaPajamas March 6, 2014, 4:39 pm

I love the chubby sticks! They’re so smooth and creamy and last forever. I have 4 or 5 colors. And it’s fun to say chubby stick…

At this point I think Mother Nature is messing with us. But yes!! Hopefully it’ll be soon, I’m so sick of winter.

I literally just saved all of them to my wishlist. The mug warmer will be for my husband though. Great picks!

Does the crockpot work like a thermos or do you have to have the heater thingy?

    • shanshantastic March 6, 2014, 5:22 pm

There’s an interior bowl that you fill up and can remove to refrigerate or wash, and then the outer shell houses the hearing element. Just plug and go! The temperature is low enough that you can leave it on all morning (I average 4 hours) and your food is perfectly heated.

Well it’s a side gig that recently started paying, definitely pocket change instead of steady income but even with the free record I get to keep the book (more money for dresses!) One of my former coworkers runs a site and I just told her I wanted to write for her!

YES! Or just a cat of the month. We have too many crazy cat people on here not to make that happen.

Better yet, Cat of the Week!! Wendy, please make this happen 🙂

The crockpot looks amazing! Also, that dress is awesome too. Sigh, my goal to not spend any money until our house renos are done is getting harder haha I already have 5 things I want after all these reader recs!

I didn’t allow myself to spend money on clothes til I was done furniture shopping. Not easy! I cracked last week and went nuts.

      • mandalee March 6, 2014, 3:36 pm

It’s so hard! I’m a reformed spender and shopper and even I can’t take it anymore. I’ve had myself restricted to purely “need” shopping since last fall when we knew we’d be buying soon. So, I see myself cracking soon.

      • lets_be_honest March 6, 2014, 3:40 pm

I made it 4 months with only little baby-sized cheats, and Christmas was right in the middle of that. Still though, it was good for me and I’d gotten out of control for a while there. So I wish you luck! If you have to crack, crack only a tiny bit on like 1 or 2 things. 🙂

      • ktfran March 6, 2014, 4:02 pm

I recently went a little clothes crazy. I’m blaming it on the winter blues. All I want to do is wear flats. That’s all. Instead of boots. I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

      • lets_be_honest March 6, 2014, 4:06 pm

I miss flats too. I’m over boots. And socks.

      • Ella_ March 6, 2014, 5:55 pm

I am over boots, socks, hats, gloves, scarves, and jackets. I have to wear basically the same thing ever day and I am so tired of it and just want to wear shorts and sandals!

      • mandalee March 6, 2014, 7:53 pm

Yes, I miss flats too. I wore them the other day even though it was freezing outside because I just couldn’t wear my boots another day. The Boston weather was not kind to the bare skin on my feet.

Not shopping is no fun. I’ve been not shopping because money is tight right now. That’s why I bought a leather jacket today. (But its a really cute one and it was over half off and its such a wardrobe staple. Right? Right? Bueller?)

I support your leather jacket purchase! Leather jackets go with everything. I bought one in high school that I still love. They last forever. Totally worth it!

Oh! If you like those epistolary love stories and also like romance/fluff you should check out Meg Cabot! (She wrote the Princess Diaries, but also has a lot of cute romance novels aimed at adults.) http://www.megcabot.com/boyseries/

I love buying dude stuff! I’ll give you some of my gift ideas even though I have no idea if GGuy is anything like Mr. LP. Mr. LP and I are huge nerds…

I got him monogrammed handkerchiefs from Land’s End for Christmas. He comes from a family of adorable Vermonters who still use hankies so he loved them. My sister makes awesome etched glass gifts – the supplies are really inexpensive at Michael’s and it only takes a few minutes to do. She made Mr. LP and I pint glasses with our initials and a pair of glasses for me (because I’m a librarian and I wear glasses) and a ranger hat for him (he’s a park ranger). The possibilities are endless! And I really like memberships as gifts – we have memberships to local botanical gardens and the National Park Service (we like to give extra even though he’s a ranger), but there’s always museums, etc.

Just getting through these comments…LlamaPajamas, that’s kind of hot that your guy is a park ranger. I’ve secretly (ok not so secretly) wanted to date a park ranger/mountain man. I’ve also secretly wanted to date a guy in the military (check! Thanks Navy Guy! 🙂 ), a cop, and a hot burly firefighter. Cause dayum.

*ahem* So good job picking up a park ranger. 😉

      • LlamaPajamas March 7, 2014, 8:37 am

Thanks! We met online and I totally swooned when I saw a photo of him in his ranger uniform. He’s the best and I love his ranger friends, too, so I highly recommend dating a park ranger sometime!

      • GatorGirl March 7, 2014, 8:41 am

Thanks!! The glasses are such a good idea (being the beer enthusiasts we are) but I think he would loose it if I brought any more glassware into the house. I’m going to look into memberships though, that’s not an idea I thought of!

      • rachel March 7, 2014, 9:32 am

I got him too many things for Christmas, so I used up all my good ideas.

Alice – REI makes fantastic thermos’ (thermoses?) that keep soups and such hot for, like, 8 hours. I use them for skiing so I don’t have to eat a shitty slice of shitty frozen shitty pizza for $12 on the mountain. Just get up 5 minutes early to heat your soup or what have you. I “hot up” the thermos by filling with boiling water first, that prevents the cold metal from instantly cooling down your food.
