Reader Recs: Sunscreen Edition

Spring has sprung and summer is right around the corner (and if you’re in the northeast, it already feels like it this week!), so I thought the recent forum thread on SPF face moisturizer recommendations was timely and wanted to give it some extra attention. As a fair-skinned redhead, sun protection is close to my heart and I was interested in what some of DW readers’ favorite SPF face moisturizers are. Here are a few that got multiple recommendations and sounded especially appealing:

“I use La Roche Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Ultra Fluid SPF 50 and love it. I like that it has a tint and gives my face a sheer sort of satin finish. For days when I don’t want something tinted, I use Bobbi Brown PSF 50 Protective Face Base.

I live in a Alberta and find that both work well alone or over a serum. The Bobbi Brown is a bit heavier, but works with my combination skin.” — Snoopy

“My husband is outdoors pretty much every day and in the sun a lot, and I’m a pain in his ass about sunscreen but he says it makes him break out. We’ve tried a few different ones, and […] I got Aveeno Absolutely Ageless SPF 30, and I don’t detect any sunscreen smell or oiliness.” — Kate

“For my no-makeup makeup days I use IT Cosmetics CC Cream which has 50+ spf. It’s tinted enough that it gives light coverage, while I feel good about the spf.”
— CurlyQue

La Roche Posay happens to be my go-to SPF face moisturizer. I also like Coola, which is lightweight, smells great, and isn’t too greasy. Do you have one you recommend that isn’t listed here?

It’s relatively new, but Supergoop’s Unscreen Sunscreen is SO FAR my favorite! It’s clear and gel-like so it blends without a white cast and is an awesome primer for my foundation.

I also like the It BB cream but I love Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Face Dry-Touch Sunscreen. Zinc-based sunscreens are a little weird at first, they make your skin a little white for a minute, then (the good ones like this one at least) do soak in completely. The best thing for me is that non only does this sunscreen not break me out, it actually helps clear acne!

Hey Wendy, just a heads up that the link for IT Cosmetics BB Cream goes to a travel size Smashbox BB Cream.

Very cool list, been looking for a good face sunscreen!

Oops – thanks, it’s fixed now. I spilled water o my keyboard while working yesterday and wrote half this post on my phone, which was a little tricky. Fingers crossed my macbook dries out with minimal damage…

I use EltaMD (https://eltamd.com) after I got a free sample from my derm. Lightweight, and it makes my skin glow. My derm also said it’s got an excellent sunscreen, which, as a fellow fair-skinned woman, is super important. I think you can only get it from derms? Price is in-line with La Roche Posay.

I’d also like to second my love of IT Cosmetics CC cream. Good coverage without being heavy.

Wendy recommended Coola a year or two ago and I love it. I use Coola Cucumber and mix with my foundation to tint it a little and wear everyday. The Coola mineral doesn’t mix well so I wear that on no make up days and it has a great matte finish when worn alone.
