To answer the question you actually asked, I think your idea is odd. And bad. You don’t know him. You have no real basis for thinking you’d be a match. And yes to what others pointed out about risks like potential disease and emotional damage (which you already seem to have plenty of). Also? Toronto is a solid 2.5 hour drive from the NY border, so it’s really not that close even if your work conference happens to be in a border town.
