Ok but can you switch to corporate, like biotech? Someone I work with, for example, was working for the CFPB, and just switched to a financial services company. We get a nice bonus every year and a profit sharing contribution to our 401k that basically doubles what we can contribute per year.

There has to be a better paying job for someone like you. If there isn’t then I’m wondering why you chose this major and type of work. I don’t understand how your husband’s degree and skills don’t make him more than working at McDonald’s.
