I read it with my 9-year-old daughters a month or two before the movie came out. They liked both the book and the movie. We saw it with my sister, who’d read the book as a child (I never had) but didn’t remember it that well, just remembered loving it. We liked the movie a lot. My sister had read bad reviews before going, too. The criticism she mentioned was that they didn’t make a big enough deal about Meg’s race. My daughter is biracial and my stepdaughter is African-American and I thought them seeing a non-white main character/heroine without it being made a huge deal of was good for them.
