I’m kinda loving this makeup thread!!
Ok, I have been having a conundrum about my eyebrows for the last couple of years. I’m 36 but all through my 20’s and teen years my eyebrows grew with no problem, I haven’t overplucked since I was 15, and my routine was to just pluck stray hairs and brush them in the mornings. Add to that, I’m blonde and my brows are a combo of light brown and invisible blonde hairs. Fast forward to the last couple of years, and my eyebrows are actually more blonde than they were 10 years ago AND they just don’t grow. I can go 2 months without touching them! I’m taking thyroid medication for a borderline-low thyroid, but they still don’t grow! So I can’t let them fill in more, as I would like, since the closer they are to my ears the more they taper and the hairs are invisible. I’ve tried a few things to fill them in but the colors are either still too dark or too yellow. I have the same problem with my eyelashes- they are shorter than they used to be! At least for them I have a mascara that I really really like (Thrive Causemetics). I’m considering seeing my derm to see what growth serums might work… (Thanks for reading – I had to vent a little!)

Yeah, I got a growth serum on Amazon called Essy something that made my eyelashes grow long to the point that several ppl noticed, and it’s supposed to work on brows too… but I don’t have a thyroid issue that I know of.

That’s good to know, Kate! I have heard there are some good off the shelf serums that work, but I haven’t been sure of what would be a good one to try. The only Rx one I know of is Latisse, and I hear it works really well. I have kind of put this on the back burner since I don’t go anywhere these days, but I do want to at least do some research!

@MoneyPenny I’ve also heard Latisse works. This would be a shorter-term solution, but there’s a former hairdresser whose videos I sometimes watch on YouTube for hair styles and tips, her name is Kate and her channel is called The Small Things Blog. She’s branched out from just hair and I guess is now a beauty/style influencer. She’s blonde and has very sparse/light eyebrows and I’ve noticed she has to draw her eyebrows. Her product recommendations may help you find brow products that work for you until a serum does.

My brow hairs can get long and kinda curly? I trim sometimes and brush them daily. They’re dark, so just brushing them to be tidy, they look ok. One of the brow ladies at a Benefit once told me my eyebrows were a few hairs from perfect and it felt like the highest compliment, haha. When I use a pencil to fill in the sparse ends, they still look like my brows but better. An old coworker had these beautiful, thick eyebrows that I always assumed were her natural brows with a small bit of help until the first time I saw her without them and realized she probably put quite a bit of effort in every morning but was great at faking them.

I’ve seen on social media that eyebrows brushed straight up seems to be some kind of trend. I think it looks unnatural and not very nice. But to each their own. I’ve never seen anyone with that lewk in person.

@Kate – I’m going in right now to add that to my list. I’ve noticed as I creep into middle age, my lashes are going invisible.

Also on my list are those pimple patches because god forbid my acne stops in fucking middle age.

Yeah the essy lash serum is not too expensive and caused several people to ask if I got something done. I always had long lashes but like 1.5 years ago I noticed they weren’t as great so I looked around and bought that stuff. Saw a difference within a few weeks. No irritation.

I use this eyebrow gel from Maybelline: https://www.amazon.com/Maybelline-New-York-Eyestudio-Tinted/dp/B00PFCSC5S/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=maybelline+eyebrow+gel+auburn&qid=1610658618&sr=8-6.

I did buy some ABH eyebrow pencils and I liked them well enough but they were a little dark, and also honestly this gel is faster and works just as well IMO. Because eyebrows are hair, I prefer to use a mascara-type product than a powder, but that could be my own weirdness. That said, I have several ABH pencils in my makeup drawer.

So I performed in a show last night and I did a full face. Anytime I’m going out with friends or performing I do a full face, which includes:

    UD Primer Potion eyeshadow primer

Eyelash curler (Revlon, bought it at Target and it works fine)

Eyeshadow (I have everything from MAC and ABH to Morphe. My favorite right now is a 4-color ABH palette I created myself at Ulta.) Morphe is great for everyday looks especially in the office, and their colors are so pigmented I wear them to perform too (I did last night!). I usually use a color all over my lid & up to my eyebrow, a lid color, a crease color, and a lighter color in the corners. On fancy days (like last night) I’ll do 1-2 more colors to add depth, like a darker color blended into the crease.

Eyeliner: I’ve been using black eyeliner pens for the past couple of years (Ulta brand works fine for me) but in the past I wore every color of the dang rainbow.

Mascara: my OG is Covergirl Lashblash Fusion (I use waterproof). I’ve tried others and none are as good, save perhaps Makeup Forever’s mascara but it’s pricey.

    Eyebrow Gel: Maybelline, link above

Powder: Bare Minerals Performance Wear powder foundation

Blush: Milani Luminoso for everyday in the summer, a MAC blush for everyday in the winter, NARS Orgasm for performing

    Highlighter: MAC

Lip primer: I legit use Chapstick or Blistex

Lipgloss: Buxom lip plumping lipgloss and/or Stila or NARS or another brand in normal times when I actually get to kiss my boyfriend because the plumping gloss burns his lips and he complains lol.

Aaaand that is all. Not counting skincare. I may be over the top. I love makeup! I will say I do love sleeping too, and not having to spend the time to do it every weekday has been nice. It was also great to wear a full face last night and feel like myself again.

That being said, I have never worn liquid foundation, never contoured, and can’t imagine doing either in the future.

Curious what you think is the big difference between powder foundation and liquid.

Liquid seems to take a lot more blending into the skin, doesn’t it? It seems that way. Plus the powder I use is more sheer than matte.

Maybe a full-coverage foundation does. I always just use my fingers and it’s quick. I think both powder and liquid foundations can range from more sheer to more full-coverage. I don’t really see a difference. Either way, you’re putting something over your skin to provide some coverage and some evening-out and making a canvas for your color products.

Either way, I think the older you get, the less you need.

@Copa, thanks for the recommendation! I’ll have to check her out!
I, too, have always had long eyebrows that would curl down, and especially when I was a teen it was hard to keep them looking straight and brushed into a nice arch. I got religious about brushing them as soon as possible in the morning to train them to go the direction I wanted! I also remember when I was mid-late 20’s and I had a male friend who would tell me he was amazed at how perfectly even/symmetrical my eyebrows were. (Yesss, all that effort paid off!!)
