My next door neighbor just died from Covid. I brought groceries to her door last Monday. I didn’t know her much at all, but I’m a little shook up.

That’s so sad anonmousse! Sounds like you were a kind neighbor to her. An elementary school teacher from my son’s school is on life support for covid. Even though we’re 10 months into this pandemic its still shocking when it hits close to home

    OOOffff.

Anyone else having trouble swallowing their rage at the “COVID is hoax!” crowd? Or perhaps the “I know and understand everything about how dangerous COVID is but am having Thanksgiving with 5 different households anyways because I don’t want to disappoint my family” people? Any tips for getting through this?

    Soo

Anyway, the lovely and talented Bride of Fyodor started developing a cough and congestion at the beginning of last week. It wasn’t a typical COVID set of symptoms-cough was wet. No fatigue or fever. It didn’t seem to make sense to get her tested because there was no conceivable way she could have gotten it. But she clearly got *something* somehow so I asked her to do a telemedicine appointment with Dr who recommended a test. She got tested on Friday and found out on Saturday that she was positive.

She is doing fine. She has a cough but otherwise has worked out an hour a day and has no fatigue/fever. Good SP02 levels. She is quarantining in our bedroom until Thursday and otherwise working, etc.

I haven’t had any symptoms. I had some mild nausea and headache early last week but my reflux has been bad lately and it might have just been that. I got tested today. I started distancing from the Bride last on Thursday so hopefully if I caught it it will show up in the test. From the statistics, more often than not, spouses do not transmit it to each other.

The Spawn of Fyodor has no symptoms and while worried is being a trooper.

We have no clue how we could have gotten this. We have lived like monks. The only social activity we’ve had with anyone is outdoors distanced and masked. Excluding outdoor distanced and masked interactions the following is an exhaustive list of our contacts during the previous month.

    1. Seventeen days before the Bride’s symptoms I went to get the oil changed. I waited outside and was inside for maybe a total of three minutes wearing a KN95 mask. Everyone in the office was masked. This is such a long time before the Bride’s symptoms that the chain would have required that I got it and then gave it to the Spawn of Fyodor who then gave it to the Bride. This would also have required me to have a completely asymptomatic case (unlikely) as well as the Spawn (more likely).

    2. The Spawn of Fyodor had an orthodontist’s appointment about two weeks before the Bride’s symptoms. Possible that she got it, had an asymptomatic case and gave it to me. This was the Dr.’s best guess.

    3. The Bride picked up some food preordered from whole foods around Thanksgiving. She was in there for about a minute wearing a KN95 mask. Staff was masked

Assuming that we make it through the next few weeks without any bad outcomes, we’ll get antibody testing for the whole clan, which may shed some light on what happened.

The Bride’s doctor said that she’s been seeing a lot of cases with super-careful people getting sick. she thinks that it’s the combination of the dry and cold weather making the virus more easily transmissible and the insanely high level of spread in Philly (20 times September levels) that a lot of previously safe activities are becoming riskier than before.

It is obviously extraordinary dispriting to have this arrive at our doorstep when we’ve given up our lives to avoid it and other people seem to have gone on with normal lives without consequences. The Bride ordered some jugs of water to have in our bedroom while recovering and like some kind of moron, I wasted five minutes wiping them down with bleach before bringing them up

I’m sorry @fyodor. That sucks! I believe dr.’s are saying that actual numbers are 7x that of what’s reported because so many are asymptomatic and/or haven’t been tested. If you account for those numbers, I think 1 in every 15 people or something in Chicago have it.

So yes… people may be living their normal lives. That doesn’t mean they don’t have it. And they’re the ones spreading it. People suck.

So sorry to hear this, Fyodor! I hope your wife’s case is mild and that you and your daughter are spared.

It’s so scary how much covid there is right now and how even if you are, as you say, living like a monk, you can still be infected. It feels really unfair. You guys are doing everything right and yet…

Fyodor, so sorry to hear about your wife. I hope she has a quick recovery and that everyone else in the household stays negative.
