My great aunt has COVID. One of her kids is working in a clothing store and is the likely culprit. She’s uncomfortable but is at home, breathing enough to call us on the phone and give the news.
Meanwhile, my mom got her first shot. Whether there is a second shot available in 21 days is anyone’s guess. Getting an appointment for the shot was a nerve wracking experience. The call centers were flooded, the software glitchy and inconsistent. She’d call and they’d say no appointments. She’d hang up call back and they’d give an appointment then drop the call in the middle of getting details. The news in Florida is filled with tales of calling for 8 hours straight without getting through or an appointment.
One uncle got his shot through the VA. Meanwhile his wife can’t get an appointment because Palm Beach is pretending that South Palm Beach is a place that is not Palm Beach.
So we can see progress but it’s an absolute cluster.January 18, 2021 at 9:10 am #1008280FyodorGuest
My uncle, who is 65 with additional risk factors, who still lives with his ex-wife who is not doing any social distancing, got his first dose of the Moderna vaccine, so good news there.January 18, 2021 at 11:10 am #1008346CopaParticipant
@TheLadyE I got caught up on this thread last night and I’m sorry you’re struggling. I know it can feel bad to be “unfriended” on social media. I usually just “silence” people if I don’t want to see what they’re posting about. You can always try to talk things out with your friend if that feels right, but take a break from social media if you need to — it’s not real life! I also agree you should sit out the wedding.
You also seem pretty focused on others who are taking risks that are bigger than yours. If this is to rationalize/minimize your own risk-taking behavior despite being higher risk, I think you need to stop. Focus on yourself and your own behavior.
And my two cents re: feeling uncomfortable, sluggish, and weight. Focus on behaviors, not outcomes. Pay attention to how your food makes you feel. Too much takeout or junk food always make me feel sluggish and gross. Focus on movement that makes you feel good. I think oftentimes when people start trying to punish themselves with foods they don’t even like because they’re healthy or movement they hate because it’s how they think they’ll get to where they want to be, but that’s usually unsustainable. You can straight up just take your dogs on great walks. Get enough sleep, drink water.January 18, 2021 at 11:49 am #1008370
Oh yeah, I forgot hydration. I have a water pitcher in the fridge, and a big Swig cup with a cover and a straw that I refill at least 3x a day.January 18, 2021 at 11:58 am #1008375
Re: Takeout. Over the holiday’s, we ordered a lot more takeout than we had the rest of the year. I needed a break from cooking ALL THE TIME. I could definitely feel the difference with my body and it’s not something I could do on the regular.January 18, 2021 at 1:16 pm #1008421CopaParticipant
I was going to do dry January, but that went out the window on the 6th. But I’ve cut back quite a bit this month. I feel different and better in the morning if I had, say, a cup of tea at night vs. a glass or two of wine, which motivates me to continue opting out of alcohol (or at least drinking less!). I can tell my sleep is better, I feel more rested, I wake up with more energy. Food is similar. We made our own Detroit-style pizzas the other night, then got lazy and kept reheating leftovers all weekend. Today I feel bloated and not my best and I know exactly why. Anyway, all this to say, I think when people pay attention to what makes them feel their best, it’s easier to build sustainable healthier habits.
Also, I’ve been making a lot of smoothies, and I’ve been loving the following combo: Silk protein almond & cashew milk (I usually use 1/2 to 1 cup, depending on how much I’m making), a small banana (not frozen!), berries, and a handful of spinach or kale. The cashew milk and banana make it taste like a creamsicle, which I personally love. If you add a lot of greens, the smoothie turns an unappealing grey but still tastes great.January 18, 2021 at 1:48 pm #1008445
We were going to do a dry January lite in that no drinking during the week and drinking less on the weekend. It was more for the husband than me. Although we did have a drink on the sixth. And last Thursday for my birthday. Who knows, we might open another one of our middle fingers on the 20th to say good fucking by to the outgoing asshole. It’s still a win for the husband though.
Our smoothies are similar. Although we do a little almond milk and a little plain, full fat Greek yogurt. Plus some spinach, a banana and some berries.January 18, 2021 at 1:52 pm #1008446RangerchicParticipant
We’ve been indoor camping since our fridge went out last Tuesday. A new one to come Wednesday (it was tough to find one that wasn’t backordered for around 3 months!). I’ve been cooking less to not have as many leftovers. But it’s been kind of hard! There are a lot of fast food places that leave me feeling sluggish and gross and regular restaurants just get too expensive to have all the time. I do think I need to get back on the smoothie bandwagon (Thanks for the idea of using Cashew milk -I’ve never used that one)…though I have to use the blender in the entry way because it always blows a breaker in the kitchen :0 (and our house is only 5 years old in March!).
Thankfully we have a full size freezer in the garage so freeing items isn’t an issue right now.
And here’s to the hopeful light at the end of the tunnel…hang in there everyone!January 18, 2021 at 2:05 pm #1008456
Ugh. I was taking a walk and this guy outside of Walgreens stopped me. I realized it’s the same guy who a couple months back told me he needed a razor and a belt and something to eat, so I had gone home and got him some stuff. This time he needed a coat and something to eat. But he said he’s like a 3X and my husband isn’t that big. So I go to the Target nearby and they don’t have anything, so I’m like, fuck it, and I get him a Visa gift card and a sandwich and water and I had a T pass with a round trip ticket on it. So I go back and give him the stuff and he’s like, cool. Then he says, “They have coats in there,” and it’s this old-school men’s shop I forgot about. So now I’m like what did I get myself into, and I go in with him and the guy at the counter gives me a pissy look, and the houseless guy takes me to the back corner where there’s a leather and sheepskin coat for $199!!! that he wants. And I’m like, “no, dude, I can’t do that.” I mean, I can, but that’s absurd. There’s a Goodwill one T stop away, or he can keep hustling til he gets a coat or enough money to buy the one he wants. I honestly don’t even spend $200 on my own costs. My winter coat is from Amazon. Now I’m not looking forward to running into him again. It’s one thing when it’s toiletries and a sandwich, but a luxury coat??January 18, 2021 at 2:13 pm #1008463BittergaymarkGuest
LA is simply very scary right now. We tried to do everything right. We closed early. Never truly re-opened. And yet our death toll is insane and the entire city lies in ruins.
It’s all very depressing.
Everything I ever loved about LA is dead or dying. So many restaurants and bars that I thought would be here forever are now simply gone. My block is completely overrun not just with the Homeless. But all of their trash. They seemingly do nothing but generate filth and garbage. There is simply so much of it. Sometimes to get around it you literally have to jaywalk. I honestly don’t even get where it all comes from or what it all is — or ever was? All around me… everything has quite literally gone to shit.
And this week… only great violence lies ahead. Biden and Harris are serving themselves up on a platter? Why? What the fuck? Are they this stupid? Delusional? Daft? Honestly? Nothing makes any sense to me anymore. Nothing.
I may flee to the desert tomorrow for a quick few days.January 18, 2021 at 2:21 pm #1008468
L.A. has been looking like a nightmare on the news. I’m so sorry that’s happening.
I am concerned AF too about Wednesday. I think Biden and Harris need to prove they are not afraid, and they trust the Secret Service who’s in charge of everything. But yeah. Fuck.January 18, 2021 at 2:37 pm #1008479
I kind of think Wednesday will be fine in D.C. only because of precautions they’re actually taking and the amount of troops that are present. But I also don’t think that it’s over and some serious shit will happen over the next few months. Those people aren’t done yet.
There might be problems elsewhere. Major cities. State capitols. Etc.
