I completely agree that you should call the dentist and speak to the dentist directly (not through their receptionist/office manager).

My assumption and hope is that the entire office was required to be vaccinated.

    @Wendy
, I saw that in NYC all school workers must be vaccinated – I hope that is real and that it gives you a tiny bit of peace of mind (knowing of course all of the other issues you mentioned the other day are still present).

Oh, that’s awful. Definitely talk to the dentist. He can’t change her opinion, but he can tell her to stop sharing them with clients at the very least. Seriously, how do these people not know how ridiculous they sound?

Relatedly, just had a job candidate who, if hired, would work indoors in close quarters with the public respond “Nope, see no reason why I should!” when asked if he was vaccinated. He didn’t make it to the second round of interviews – not solely because of that, he had qualification issues – but that response would have been a dealbreaker if it were close between him and another candidate because, WTF? At least have enough awareness to read the room and get it that if you’re being asked that for the role “Nah, don’t care about Covid!” isn’t how best to respond.

We’re never going to get out of this pandemic if it depends on people like this. The lack of critical thinking skills is terrifying.

Leslie, I do feel better that all school staff in NYC will will be mandated to be vaccinated, but think that should have happened weeks ago to ensure full vaccination by the first day of school. Luckily, my kids’ new school, a charter school, did mandate vaccines weeks ago so we’ll be good there. We had a zoom meeting with admins yesterday and learned about more safety protocols and I didn’t get all my wish list but there will be a few mitigations that I know are importation. Still, with indoor lunches and high-quality masks not provided to students, I expect my kids will likely get covid before they’re vaccinated. Have to just hope it’s mild and there aren’t longterm effects.

A quick update for those interested on the Pfizer approval in the US (but items 3 onward have relevance outside of the US)

    1. Approval is for 16 and above.
    2. Emergency use is still for 12 – 15
    3. Three studies are underway for pediatric use, those results aren’t due until 2023 and 2024.
    4. 10 new studies are required – of which 6 are for myocarditis and pericarditis across different age groups, and dosages (1st dose, 2nd dose, 3rd dose)
    5. Some of the studies are investigating lower dosage for people under 30.

data from over 40,000 patients went into the approvals (half of the patients got a placebo)
Safety from the millions who received the vaccine went into decision about the 10 studies.

In short, no one is sitting back and resting yet.

Looks like I spoke too soon about toxic work. We’ve spent the past couple weeks interviewing candidates for an open role and the woman we’re now in the process of hiring told an anecdote about her personal life in the interview that did not sit well with me at all. (She did something I consider offensive, unbelievably tone deaf in today’s world, and racist.) When asked to give our feedback, one coworker wanted to disqualify her altogether over it. I was the other person to say it didn’t sit right. I suspected everyone else involved would want to hire her notwithstanding so that’s what’s happening. So already it’s like, well this blows. But now my boss is trying to add a few responsibilities to her role, but in doing so feels he needs to take a couple responsibilities off her plate, so he called yesterday to get my thoughts on adding them to my plate. Like, what!? The job she applied for is the role I had when I first started at the company, I’ve since made a lateral move to a role that I feel much better suited to and enjoy more. I don’t really want any old responsibilities back. It feels like a move backwards for me even though the move was lateral… and it’s not an insignificant chunk of work. I feel caught off guard and like this should’ve been discussed with me sooner. He said we could discuss more today and I’m writing down all the points I’d like to say.

Whoa. That sounds like a huge red flag that’s absolutely going to manifest itself with her as a team member. As far as trying to put stuff back on your plate that’s not a growth opportunity, I would try to push back and say you really love doing X, Y, and Z where you can add value and also grow, and you were hoping to be able to take on [insert something here that would be an advancement in responsibilities]. And try to make a case for someone else being able to take on the new stuff he’s trying to give the new hire OR the stuff he’s trying to take off her plate, that would be a growth opp for that other person.

Yeah. One of the things he asked me to take on was actually supposed to stay with me when I changed roles but something had to give. It’s something I helped launch a few years ago and was sad I had to give it up. So that I’m happy to take. I’m more familiar with the workflow of that role than my boss is and I don’t think he realizes that one thing he floated by me as something I could take back on isn’t that easy to lift out of the rest of the role. So I’m open to new responsibilities and do want to talk to him about growth opportunities, but what he’s proposed doesn’t quite make sense.

And yeah, after that interview my coworkers and I stayed on Zoom to discuss. One coworker immediately brought up the anecdote as inappropriate and another was like, “Wait, we’re not allowed to do X anymore? This is considered offensive?” Oh boy.

Oh, but for anyone who may be curious: I continued to test negative for COVID and the boyfriend made it through his isolation period. I feel exhausted after the past two weeks between work getting weird fast and being the only able bodied person around here once the extreme fatigue hit my boyfriend. He’s cleared to go back into the world but still has some minor lingering symptoms (no taste/smell, still has a bit of a cough) that will hopefully clear up soon.

Any my dad was able to get a booster shot as a clinical trial participant, which is a huge relief to me since we’re all traveling next week for my grandma’s funeral. I’ve been stubborn about not wanting to cancel but also increasingly apprehensive about my dad.

My brother’s kids have been back at school for less than two weeks and, sure enough, two of my nephews have Covid. Both too young to be vaccinated. Mild cases, so far. School board superintended has expressed surprised at how fast Covid is infecting students. But, honestly, what did the school expect? Lax to no mask policies and a bunch of kids who can’t be vaccinated in a situation where a disease spreads as fast as chicken pox. There wasn’t a chicken pox vaccine when I was a kid and I remember it taking over each grade in waves. This isn’t hard, people.

That’s one of the things (and there are so many) that makes the least sense to me about this trash fire. Like, kids spread everything in school and always have. And then their parents get it and spread it at work. That’s just what happens all winter. I can see Trumpers being in denial but it’s broader than that. Or I can see maybe before, they thought well kids don’t get that sick and old ppl are vaccinated… but now? What is it, 3x more kids have died from Covid than in the worst flu season ever, and they can get quite sick with delta. We need to stop fucking around now and make everyone get vaccinated. No religious exemption. I had a real one as a kid, but the people in that religion have gotten vaxxed because they follow public health guidelines. And anti-vaxxers will get fake ones. The only exemptions should be a medical exemption *from your doctor* that you have whatever serious condition that prevents you from being vaccinated. Everyone else, line up. These variants start in the unvaccinated and the next one may be worse.

One of my co-workers is out for the foreseeable future because of covid exposure at daycare and her nanny won’t come. She has a preschooler and a baby. She literally can’t work. Also, her whole family had Covid last winter while she was pregnant.

Re: kids spreading germs. So, so true.

My niece picked up hand, foot, mouth at daycare two Friday’s ago. She passed to my nephew. And my bil has now too. He had a high fever and couldn’t open his eyes. My sister doesn’t have the symptoms yet. The nephew’s 5 year birthday party was canceled this weekend and I’m glad they’re waiting a couple weeks to reschedule. I don’t want to get near that shit.

I know it’s not covid, but more proof how fast things spread.

I put the husband in charge of ordering balloons for the nephew since his birthday is actually today. He went a little overboard, so I hope that at least cheers him up.
