I really wish the CDC would do a better job with messaging. I get that new info changes things, etc., but so many people are now left with the idea that the vaccines don’t really work. The “experimental” bs I think comes from social media, but this whole thing about breakthrough Delta infections, boosters, etc. I feel like is more on the CDC. From stuff I’ve read, I don’t even think boosters are necessary at this point, and breakthrough infections are what, 1 in 5,000?

I think the CDC botched the messaging from the beginning. Our then president made it a billion times worse.

I know a couple of people who had breakthrough infections. One person is in his 70s, the other close to my age and living in TX.

I think the only person I know, is a young person who’s clearly constantly socializing and doing team sports.

I’m sure they’re more common in less vaccinated states, but they’re still rare.

Agreed, that’s why I mentioned the TX bit and the age bit. I haven’t heard of anyone else in my orbit who had a breakthrough case and who is generally cautious.

The friend in TX is similar to me with Covid and being careful. She can’t figure out where she got it. She rarely leaves the house. We had a trip to Santa Fe scheduled a month ago, but canceled it (she did) because of the Delta rise. But, it’s TX, so.

When Delta came they absolutely failed to inform the public adequately. They continued to insist that breakthroughs were “rare” long after it was clear that it wasn’t the case. They also continue to fail to inform the public about the pretty high rates of hospitalization and death among the elderly who are vaccinated. Vaccinated people over 50 have a 1-2 percent case fatality rate in the British data.

CDC absolutely botched this from the get go. They should do a thorough lessons learned and come up with some standard protocols for next time (because there will be a next time). The mixed messages, giving, changing and reversing direction without setting adequate baselines, absolute mess.

As for breakthroughs – the initial data show that for three vaccines available in the US, Moderna has the lowest incidence of breakthrough – about 10%. Pfizer follows at about 20% and J&J at about 40%. Now, there are likely some context reasons for what we’re seeing but overall, the number of breakthrough infections are generally lower than unvaccinated and while some vaccinated people have died from COVID infection, the rate is far lower than unvaccinated and are usually folks with one or more risk factors.

If I can get similar information on breakthroughs from the other vaccines (Sputnik, Sinovac, et al.) I’ll post. I haven’t been monitoring but in the early days Sputnik was doing as well as Moderna/Pfizer and Sinovac – not so much.

My work has mandated vaccines or testing twice a week. I am happy with that. A little surprised since they have been slow on COVID protocol otherwise. There is definitely one person who is unvaccinated. I don’t know why but I am ok not knowing. Although I do overall support vaccine passports I still do feel uncomfortable with the privacy aspect.

I heard Biden is mandating vaccine policies for private companies for over 100 employees?

Ontario’s vaccine passport is coming on September 22. Antivaxxers are protesting at hospitals which is so disgusting. Go to the place where they make policy!

I think they have officially approved booster shots for immunocompromised so my fiancé is looking into that as he might fall into the category.

, just curious, do you think Sinovac will be eventually on the approved list for incoming travellers? I only ask since you seem to be in the field! I know it’s just speculation. I ask because my family in Hong Kong have been vaccinated with Sinovac and if they come to Canada they still need to do mandatory quarantine, last I checked.

So the boyfriend and one of my cousins are both younger, childless, don’t-do-much people who still got breakthrough COVID. A few coworkers have had breakthrough cases as well, but they have kids and I’ve assumed that was why. The boyfriend’s sister is a teacher in a red state so it seemed like it seemed like it was just a matter of time before she got sick. I hadn’t heard the 1 in 5,000 number, but based on what I’m seeing/hearing in my own life, breakthrough cases don’t seem that rare.

Yeah, I’m not sur4e about that 1 in 5000 rate either. I am not friends with 5000 people and I know of a handful of people in my social circle who have had breakthrough cases.

Who really knows, since the CDC isn’t tracking it!? I think that was based on state level data, maybe analyzed by KFF, and it did vary from state to state.

Yeah… I personally know of 5 breakthrough infections in the past week alone. 1 in 5,000 —- my ass!! The Center for Disease Confusion is deliberately lying again, I guess. What other answer is there? All they ever do is spew fucking bullshit. Fauci is a joke. Fuck. Them. All.
