I had to look up betadine to be sure I was recalling what it was correctly…and yes, yes I was. I don’t have words.

I went to the dentist this morning (he is vaccinated) and he told me a story about a nurse friend (or client?) of his whose husband nearly died from COVD and she works in the ICU dealing with COVID patients and refuses to get the vaccine. So I would like to be really hopeful about the nearish future but most of the times, I’m just not.

That’s… extremely close to drinking disinfectant.

I believe that there is both a betadine that is designed to be used as a gargle for colds and flu and one that is a topical disinfectant.

Right, and there’s an ivermectin that’s made for humans and available by Rx, and one that’s made for horses and available at Tractor Supply.

@Fyodor and @Kate you are BOTH correct!

The sheer stupidity that I’ve read over the last few weeks is crazy.

    Newsom WON!

Not gonna lie. I was worried. Very worried. But in the end — it wasn’t even close. Sanity prevailed.

That said — Gavin is a thoroughly mediocre governor and I sincerely hope he moves on to something else real soon.

Interestingly, I got an invitation to my high-school class reunion coming up in a few weeks. Uh, no thanks.

It’s a milestone reunion, so it’s going to be a two-day event – a tour of the school during school hours, an indoor luncheon, a high-school football game, a local sightseeing cruise on a small boat, an indoor dinner followed by drinks and dancing. And I would have to travel across the country to get there. Plus, it’s in a conservative area where there will be low vaccination rates and mask usage. It’s kind of a checklist of all the things I wouldn’t want to do during a pandemic.

I wouldn’t have gone even if there wasn’t COVID, but sheesh.

    Question:
My boss has called a meeting for our team — in a hotel conference room that involves travel for everyone, with a dinner the night before. On Monday I learned that one of the attendees (there are 6-7) is not vaccinated. There is no policy on vaccination or travel.
Today I told them I would have to attend virtually, that I wasn’t going to have dinner with someone who wasn’t vaccinated or sit in a closed room with them all day.
Tonight they told me that he has offered to take a COVID test beforehand or to stay home instead of me. They’re asking what I need him to do to feel comfortable. I haven’t answered, but I don’t think the decision should fall on ME. They’re the ones who called the meeting. They’re also saying they “can’t guarantee” that the dinner will be outdoor seating.
    Thoughts? Suggestions?

@FYI that sucks. For me, even if everyone were vaccinated, that would be a no-go because I have an unvaccinated kid at home. Just not worth the risk. Is the travel by public transit (airplane?) That would also be a no. (My husband and I often joke, in these times, “It’s a no from me, dawg!” And then I feel old.) I don’t know if you have young kids or immune compromised individuals in your household- that would be a great reason not to go. It’s ridiculous that they would even ask you to go at all since it can apparently be done virtually!

That one is tricky. It works better if you have a set policy. One of my teammates who has an elementary school kid said ages ago that she has a contract with other parents that she won’t eat at indoor restaurants. That right there gets us all off the hook when our extreme extrovert boss suggests we get together. It can only be outdoors. And when she was trying to get us to come work in a conference room together for a day and then have dinner “in Chinatown,” everyone was basically like, ehhhhh, Delta, I have kids, the T, etc.

It works much better when you make it about a policy, or even a circumstance, than a single person. Like if they already knew that you don’t eat indoors, it would have been easier to say you want to, say, work remotely while they’re in the conference room, you’ll be on zoom, and then meet outdoors for drinks/dinner. But now it’s about this individual, and they’ve put you in a tight spot.

I would probably say, yes, you’d like him to take a rapid test before traveling and before the dinner (by the new guidelines he SHOULD be testing), and you’d like the reservation to be outdoors. Can you say you just don’t feel safe with any of it until cases have gone down? Yes, but unfortunately at the possible risk of not being “a team player.” What’s your company’s policy on this stuff? Is your boss overstepping?

I had to be tested for COVID Monday after coming down with something that had similar symptoms. It was negative but I’m struggling to overcome whatever it is. Originally, I had headache, sore throat, cough and I also lost my voice. It has now settled in my sinuses and my other symptoms are gone. I’m glad it’s not Covid but I do wish I knew what it was. I wear a mask wherever I go so I don’t know how I caught this (of course most people don’t wear masks here anymore). Sigh…this just shows that it would be so easy for me to get a breakthrough case if I’m not even more careful. So much for doing more fun stuff again.

FDA advisory board is meeting on October 26 to consider approval of Pfizer for kids 5-11. Also meeting mid-October to discuss Moderna/J&J boosters and mix and match boosters. Based on past experience final approval/rollout usually happens 4-5 days after these meetings.
