@Copa do you want a single monitor port or multiple monitor ports? Do you want something with a USB hub that lets you connect a keyboard, mouse, etc?

@Fyodor, you’re cracking me up!! I’m an electronic moron and like @copa, I don’t care to research. I’m like “make it work! I don’t need to know the details and don’t comprehend a thing you’re saying.”

@copa If you have the two Thunderbolt ports, this will let you run two external monitors and also let you connect an external keyboard and mouse via USB. You plug the hub into the two Thunderbolt ports and then plug the monitors, devices, and your power adapter into the ports on the hub.

If you want something that’s just a simple video adapter for an external monitor, you can use this.

honestly, if anyone needs help with their home office setup, I’d be happy to recommend stuff and walk you through setting it up on zoom. It’s something I’m good at and it would make me feel good to make things less crappy for people in some small way

@Copa, I feel you on not having monitors. I am doing a lot of content creation/design work for my new role and the first thing I asked for was another monitor and a keyboard/mouse. I ordered the keyboard & mouse from Amazon and my company is buying a monitor for me and shipping it. If we were in the office I would have one anyway.

Several of my friends have come over and sat outside and talked to me. I also took my dogs over to my friend’s house to play with her dog outside in their yard. Our state is opening up – we’re in Phase 1 – and I feel ok about it. I’m still not really going anywhere (the freaking MALL is open, what on earth?) but I did go to Target, the grocery store and the liquor store the other day, with a mask. It felt like liberty.

Back in the desert. I went to LA for a few days as Charley — the guy who owns this house — needed someone to stay with his cats as he had 5 days off work, finally. And needed some desert time! So I got to see Clem! And the two other cats. But Clementine is my favorite. And she was so snuggly and happy to see me. She really was. We had three cozy nights and lazy days. I did not go out much. LA is intense after being alone in the desert. It was so good to see Clem. To actually touch something alive other than Cacti. That sounds like a great line, but it’s just crazy true.

    Yeah, I miss her.

Pretty sure we have FOUR desert iguanas living here now. Three adults and a little one. All were out and about today. There are definitely three. Two adults and the baby. But I think I say a fourth again today. Although it could be one of the other two way across the yard…

The cacti won’t bloom much longer, I fear. They have been going since I arrived pre-lockdown. So it’s been a crazy good run.

I passed on that Low budget movie. They look to start June 1st. Eh… no. Just not ready to start work and even with a small crew it seemed dicey. Logistically… They were really cool about it. So that was a relief.

Tomorrow I start writing. I need to bang out some scripts. Wish me luck.

Wow! Thanks, @Fyodor! I really appreciate it. I think I’ll pull the trigger on the first one today. I think my boyfriend even has a spare monitor in his office, so with any luck I’ll be up and running with a better setup by next week.

@LadyE I work a bit in InDesign and it’s kinda brutal on my laptop. My laptop screen is, IDK, 13 inches? So my InDesign window can’t open to its full size on my laptop. So I’m constantly dragging the window around to be able to scroll far enough to the right or left and see different areas of the file. And on top of that, my InDesign is really buggy. Quits unexpectedly when I do certain things in there and my IT department has no idea why because “it’s been years since they’ve used InDesign.” Which, okay, but that doesn’t help me. And then there are the days where my internet is just kinda slow and opening the files takes forever.

In other frustrating work news, our server and email is currently down. Awesome. I suspect I’ll have to put in some hours this weekend to make up for lost time this week.

Hmm, Copa, I wonder if you have RAM (or whatever, IDK the lingo) to properly run InDesign.

I solely work in InDesign. Our company has three levels of laptops depending on your job. One size for people who work mostly in CAD all day. One for people like me who use InDesign or other similar programs and one for executives who mostly read docs and are on e-mail. And even me getting the “middle” option, sometimes it crashes InDesign if my file is too big or I have too much open.

The screen thing, I don’t get at all. That’s annoying.

The thing with the screen not fitting is apparently a common issue with InDesign . Maybe try one of these solutions?

To change the resolution as suggested as a third option in the article, try these steps.
