This weekend my husband had a few friends that we are not close to over to watch golf. I knew he was having some guys over my hope was to leave snacks and have a me day, however when the guys arrived some of their wives/girlfriends came with them unannounced. Which was ok not what I wanted or was ready for but hey it happens. So awhile into the game one of the women wanted to sit on my deck so they proceeded to go and I was going to grab drinks and follow. However moments later one of the women starts screaming and we run to the back porch and she has shredded her hair with my dog grooming comb. She was screaming that she was using the comb she found out on the shelves and it cut her hair, and she must have been going to town on her hair because there was a giant chunk out. It’s a dog comb with a photo of a dog on the handle and a razor between the blades, meant to comb and cut out mattes in our dogs hair. I apologized profusely and offered to pay for her to go to my friends salon, she refused and they left. Well she called at lunch and wants my husband and I to pay for her haircut, and extensions at the high end salon. I was on board until she told me it was going to be $800. I called my hair stylist and asked what would it cost to get hair extensions for her length of hair in that area and a cut to match and she quoted me that it would cost around $150 – $220 depending on the dye job to match the extensions. I called the lady back and offered $300 towards her hair. She is not happy and is threatening to sue us. In reality she used a comb at someone else’s house, a comb on their deck with a dog photo on it next to the dog shampoo. How liable are we for this? Should I just pay her and never allow them back over?

She cant sue you. And I was a legal assistant for 9 years so… SHE made a mistake. SHE brushed her hair with a dog brush. SHE used it WITHOUT your permission. It was clearly marked as a dog brush. For her to think she can hold you accountable is laughable.

It sucks what happened to her but she needs to take it as a lesson learned and move on. DONT use other people’s things without asking. I wouldnt pay her the $300 you offered her (with your heart of gold) anymore either because her threat basically showed you that she is a bad person undeserving of your generosity.

Yeah no. You were nice to offer a haircut but now it’s off. Forget it. She’s insane. She can’t sue you.

Maybe also have a talk with your husband about better communication re: who is coming over and when.

Who picks up a brush off a deck and brushes their hair with it. Who expects you to pay for this? This woman is off her rocker. I’d have laughed my ass off when she did it and when she asked me to pay for it. Evolution sure has a way of weeding them out. Just wow.

Nope. Let her sue you. Seriously. Let her take you to small claims court. Lock up that little stupid doggie brush right now. Go buy a new one. Do not give it to her. Bring it to court and show it to the judge. This woman will be laughed out of court. I can’t imagine any sane lawyer taking her case.

Offer her nothing. You made a good will gesture. She tried to take advantage. Fuck that noise. Tell all of your friends “I asked my stylist what it would cost. I doubled what he told me and it still wasn’t enough for her so I don’t know what more I can do but just walk away from this nonsense.”

I can’t believe you offered her anything. If she keeps it up file for a restraining order, she’s out of her mind.

    She won’t sue.

Jesus, even if it was one of those razor combs for people, and it’s in your bathroom and she uses it without asking (or even being invited over), she’s a moron and i don’t see how you could be considered liable.

I agree with @lisforleslie. Let this crazy woman sue you and either get refused at the door by attorneys or laughed out of court. I mean FFS, who even wants to use some stranger’s brush?? I’ve seen doggie brushes before and while I don’t know exactly what your brush looks like, most of them look pretty distinct just to avoid this exact incident from happening. The only thing to blame here is her own stupidity and lack of respect for other people’s things.

You were very nice to her, offering to pay for her haircut and then offering $300.
I would have kicked her out of my house after laughing at her for 8 hours.

Thank you for this morning laugh. I did something similar to myself in my 20s when house sitting and went straight to the salon and never told a soul.

Also – I have a shih tzu and have never heard of such a comb. Can you post the product link?
