Hang on, just trying to get this straight. Op is somewhere they can’t go out for a drink, either because that country is A. careful or B. has high levels of contagion atm. And wants to travel to another country where things are more relaxed, either because A. country ruled by buffoon or B. levels of infection are very low.Is this the basic scenario? Either way, it seems rash and inherently selfish, even leaving girlfriend, her parents, or OP’s parents out of the mix.July 13, 2020 at 6:00 am #896938LisforLeslieGuest
No sympathy from me either. Your girlfriend is simply providing you information on what will happen if you choose to go. There is no ultimatum here. The fact that they are saying only one week – well that’s how you spread COVID. Two weeks is the standard cycle time.
You want to go and drink and travel – fine. But jeez get over your fucking self and understand that your actions have consequences. If you come home with COVID or pick it up when you’re at the airport returning home – you can be shedding virus for at minimum two weeks, possibly longer. If you give your girlfriends or her parents COVID and one of them get very sick – YOU did that. You. Not them. You will be bringing that into their home.
I have no words for how foolish and self absorbed you sound without getting a slap from Wendy or Kate.July 13, 2020 at 6:33 am #896964ronGuest
Or OP lives in a Muslim country where drinking is illegal and the law is enforced in his community.July 13, 2020 at 6:38 am #896968
The bars are actually open in their country, I saw it on the news, and I’m pretty sure the virus is not under control there.
Listen, I’m not going to slap anyone for doing something they’re legally allowed to do, but it does piss me off when people travel interstate or inter country and don’t follow the quarantine rules. My own extended family just did this, and I brushed them off when they tried to see me.
And it really is pretty childish and selfish to say you’re “gutted” about not being able to go on a 3-day drinking trip when so many people are giving up so much more, including their loved ones and their lives.July 13, 2020 at 9:07 am #897034FYIGuest
“Gutted” because you want to go out barhopping and playing virus roulette with your buddies, but still have sex the moment you return just in case you have to travel for work?
This sums up the whole post perfectly. Get your head in the game, christ.July 14, 2020 at 6:59 am #897877
Apologise, that was surely remiss of me to forget there are many countries where alcohol isn’t allowed, especially as there’s at least one “dry” island not all that far from where I live. You won’t get prosecuted right enough should you get caught out but there’s no licensed premises anywhere and Mrs M. in the shop will hear about it and despise you forever. No idea what they do about the odd tourist who surely carries drink, sniff their breath and tut a lot I expect.July 14, 2020 at 7:16 am #897890
Wait, what? The ip is from a country where the bars are most definitely open and the disease is not under control, and they’re talking about going drinking in another country where the virus may or may not be under control.
Possibly their family is Muslim or something, but the country definitely is not.July 14, 2020 at 7:55 am #897915
Oh, I just meant I should have thought of that in my earlier reply, I just forgot that was the case in some places and was worried I was not taking other people’s experiences into account etc.. It wouldn’t change my opinion anyway, even if OP hadn’t had a drink in seven years, they would still be being really selfish.July 14, 2020 at 8:15 am #897927EssieParticipant
FFS, don’t dump this on her. It’s not that she won’t let you go. You just don’t like the (utterly sensible) rules that will be put in place if you do go. Oh, boo hoo, you won’t be able to get laid before your work trip if you go on a drinking holiday.
Of course you two had a tiff when you told her. People tend to react badly when their significant others act like an immature little boy. She just saw a side of you she didn’t like.
Grow up.July 14, 2020 at 9:55 am #897991AnchrigeGuest
Based on the use of “gutted”, I assume the OP is British (and “gutted” is varying degrees of severity here – it usually indicates fairly mild disappointment, although depends on tone. If you’re “absolutely gutted” maybe that’s strong, but we also use “gutted” if, like, the pub’s closed. We also use it as a jokey one word response. So OP might be anywhere from mildly disappointed to genuinely distraught – it’s all in the tone!).
The pubs did open on July 4th here, and it was a terrible decision. Bars are generally another story, but clubs are definitely closed – I assume OP wanted to go clubbing. Also our idiot government tried to enforce 14 day quarantine for about a fortnight, and now it’s been lifted for most European countries (not US) before it was even properly instituted. Our government’s approach is cack-handed and entirely made up as it goes along, and mainly consists of politicians swearing blind that they didn’t say the thing that they were recorded to have said the very day before.
Because the government guidelines are so changeable and random, young people especially are just assuming everything is fine and they can resume life as normal – OP’s attitude is becoming really normal here. But we’re having major outbreaks (mostly to do with exploitative employment practices), and the lockdown is basically lifted in all but name. I don’t really blame the OP because the UK is a mess with guidelines, no one knows what we can actually do, and we’re having Economic messaging shoved at us from all corners (although to be fair, England is the mess, because the other countries in the UK are actually doing much better with guidelines).
Can definitely blame OP for getting pissy over his girlfriend’s basic boundaries though.

Oh ok, here you use “gutted” if your partner cheats on you or a loved one dies or something. And yeah, I see the distinction now between pubs and clubs. They probably want to go to Spain and hit the discos or something. And I mean, in the US we have similar attitudes among the youth due to completely inconsistent government handling of situations at the state level.July 14, 2020 at 11:58 am #898065anonymousseParticipant
Huh, it’s funny to me that “gutted” (which I do say fairly often) means “mildly inconvenienced” elsewhere. What a world.
