But I don’t agree that the fact that sex was involved, or whether or not he has a “type,” or whether the Asian spas just happened to be what was available to him, has any bearing on this being a racist crime or a hate crime. He killed 6 women of Asian descent because they made him feel bad about himself. Like… that’s it really.

I’m saying this entire situation has more layers and nuances and we’re focusing on ONE hatred here. Yes, these women were Asian, and he definitely hated them. But I think the case will be made that he hated them for being women, not for being Asian women. I think as this unfolds the issue will be more around he hated being tempted into shameful sex and the women who tempted him needed to be destroyed.

Meanwhile we have these businesses that are absolutely illegal and filled with young women who are essentially sex slaves, working off fees to smuggle them or their families into the country. Everyone knows it but no one is doing anything about it. And that piece of the puzzle is being swept under the rug because no one wants to admit that these places are operating.

I’m inelegantly saying that had these women been Eastern European, blond, blue eyed Polish girls, I think the narrative would be focused on the misogyny or sex slaves but we’re hiding behind one facet of this situation.

Yes, a lot of people want to make this about the shooter and all his nuances, but they are wrong. This is a racist hate crime.

If they were white, you’re correct, this wouldn’t be a racist crime. But they weren’t. He chose to frequent and kill Asian women. That makes it a racist hate crime. Which goes with the overall narrative of white people dehumanizing and being violent toward Asian people.

Couple things in this short article: 1) these were legally operating businesses with no indication they engaged in prostitution. One woman that got killed was there for a legit massage after her waitressing job. 2) the AAPI community believes these crimes were racially motivated so, as far as I’m concerned, they are. I don’t think we should even be talking about sex and prostitution actually.

You’re right – he saw them as less than human. He should be tried for murder of 8 Asian people. Whether he hated them because they were women or because they were Asian will not bring anyone back.

And I’m in total agreement that if he used his father’s gun, his father should be on trial as well.

Remember too that we only heard this “sex addiction” crap from the racist Georgia law enforcement authorities. It’s the excuse a lot of disgusting predatory men have given to excuse their behavior (Harvey Weinstein for example). It helps them to dehumanize women like they’re just objects of temptation like a bag of drugs.

Also remember that there are strip clubs, porn stores, adult movie theaters, etc that he could have targeted. But he targeted specifically Asian spas, which again, remember, are legitimate businesses with no complaints of anything. White racist men are trying to frame the narrative as these women are prostitutes so we feel like they did something wrong to deserve being killed, or at least are less human. Don’t fall for it.

And to Mark’s point… the son of one of the victims is calling BS on the sex addiction nonsense, and also calling out the parents, asking what they taught him. He feels they’re throwing their son under the bus and not taking responsibility for what they taught him growing up. That’s valid. I will say, my parents are extremely far left but there was a period where my brother (who is like a child due to developmental issues) got radicalized by right-wing talk radio he listened to while driving for work. He was spouting all sorts of shit about illegal immigrants and such. It’s not always the parents’ fault, but they should definitely examine themselves.

It is entirely plausible it’s BS, although there does appear to be a history of issues related to sex but that could have simply given him the idea instead of driving to three restaurants.

I think my position originated when all of the talking heads were saying “But was this a hate crime?” and all I kept yelling at the TV was “Yes! This is a hate crime against women!” because he specifically sought out women according to his own words. But to your point, he picked Asian women specifically – totally and completely racist.

It makes sense to me what they’re saying, that sexualization of and racism against Asian women go hand in hand.

I mean, he’s a self-described sex addict, but what does that really mean? And how does it affect what kind of crime this is? At the end of the day he hated Asian women and he killed them.
