I’m all for ending the tipping culture. I truly am. I would much rather people get paid a real wage than be beholden to bad managers and worse clients. I just don’t want to move to a bribing culture. I’m not for that.

Doggy day care – you can send everyone a little cash or you can send a meal. If your doggy day care has a staff of 10 + people a week, that’s a lot of cash. This is why I bought bagels for the rental car place. I don’t know who’s working that day. They’ve got a rotating staff that changes all the time. I see some of the same faces, but there are people who are there after I leave and before I return.

I mean, the cost of food does generally go up but everyone’s wages are higher so it’s all even in the end. I’d much rather get the minimum wage of $18.29 here in Australia and pay a bit more for food. As an aside a big mac is cheaper here than in the US so food prices don’t necessarily correspond to wages and I’m not tying myself in knots every year trying to figure out who to sling money at.

There’s bad service due to turnover or short staffing and then there’s just a culture of bad service. I used to live in Washington DC; absolute worst when it comes to retail service. You’d walk into a Macy’s or other store and you’d walk up to buy something and the clerks would just turn away and keep talking. Talking to one another. Talking on the phone. You’d need to get into a dressing room, no one around to unlock it. The number of times I just walked out without buying anything. Good for my wallet tho.

You had to look for the little old ladies, they’d help. Anyone under 60 – doubtful.

    Macy’s now… it’s like a scavenger hunt to find a clerk and a register.

I have heard they can’t get people to work in Macy’s or Kohl’s anymore, thanks to you know who and his immigration policies.

Australia was the first place abroad I went for any length of time.

I felt so, so guilty not tipping. Or tipping only nominally. But all the guide books said just a bit was fine and all that was expected.

The U.S. really is pretty unique in our tipping culture, and I got over it.

I was backpacking so I didn’t eat out a lot anyways, but when I did I found the service to be comparable.

And frankly, sometimes at home I find our service to be a little too much. I don’t love get interrupted multiple times mid-sentenced to be asked how things, do I need anything else? I understand waiters don’t love doing that either, they’re trained to do that, but I’d prefer to be left alone a little more if I’m being honest.

Yeah I mean I’ve never really tipped, unless it was to get rid of some change. No need to feel guilty! Heaps of places have those little tip jars out but I’ve never seen anyone use them outside of that reason. The only time I’ve tipped consistently is at the pub to get served quicker (and I was drunk).

I didn’t mind tipping when I was visiting a couple of years back but the rules seem so random and arbitrary it’s frustrating. I remember we used one of those express check in counters at an airport a few times and it wasn’t until the last one the guy very tactfully suggested we could give him a couple of bucks and we were like ‘ohhhhhhh’. We had no idea we’d been inadvertently rude. And the restaurant thing just makes me mad. Why does the restaurateur get to pass their obligations on to the customer? They should be paying a decent wage and looking after their workers, not leaving them to the whims of the public.

Yeah, this was my experience when I lived there. I think that it got better near the end of my time there but it could be pretty bad. JFK called it a town of Southern efficiency and Northern charm.

BOF*, who was at the time merely GOF** once insisted on coming with me to the Nordstrom in Friendship Heights to go suit shopping and got so frustrated with the lack of service that she gave up and I ran out the next day and quickly bought a suit alone before she could reschedule .***

*** clothes shopping with other people is Geneva Convention level torture for me. BOF after that one time has mostly left me alone.
