Way to tie it all together in a nice bow, Addie!

@mrmid, is it illegal to be buried anywhere but a cemetery? Well, maybe if it becomes popular they’ll come up with a new kind of cemetery. Like just a field full of trees and flowers or something, no markers because it wouldn’t make sense if you’re going to be gone in a few years. Maybe they could just have a plaque somewhere that says all the names of the people buried there.

Cemeteries in North America aren’t great, but cemeteries in Europe are amazing. They have super cool gravestones, and lots of nooks and crannies, and benches to sit on and stuff. I love going to them whenever I’m on a trip overseas. It’s just ours that suck.

@redrover, I didn’t know that about European cemeteries. From my understanding if you don’t get buried in a cemetery, then you have to own the land and get it approved by neighbours and stuff, and of course the land would become pretty worthless if your future heirs ever needed to sell it.

I always figured I’d get cremated but didn’t think of the whole donate to science thing. Is there a big need for that? Med students I guess?

Oh totally random non sequitur, but AP what ever happened to your long distance boyfriend?

@mrmid, I guess it would be hard to get away with secretly taking the body out into the woods or something to bury it there. 🙂 Actually even some of our cemeteries aren’t that bad. There’s a town a couple of hours away named after one of my ancestors. In the graveyard you can still find some of the markers, they’re over 150 years old. So that’s kind of cool, for me. But there are some sad ones around in Markham (you’re in Ontario too, right?). Like, Markham used to be a little village, with little churches and small graveyards. There’s one right by Highway 7 and 404, cute little church with a tiny graveyard. And then a few metres away, a super-busy highway. It would be messed up to have a relative in there.

Best graveyard I ever went to was in Edinburgh, called Greyfriars Kirkyard. And then there was another one in Edinburgh, where the church was still there, but the graveyard was missing. It was all underground. We did an underground tour of the city and it was super creepy. But fascinating.

Mostly it’s a function of age. Old graveyards = cool. Newer graveyards = weird. The above-ground ones in New Orleans are amazing, from what I’ve heard.

I know there are some European cemeteries where you lease your spot. And your family has to keep paying or they exhume and move/cremate you. That to me is crazy!

@redrover, I’m very familiar with Markham, numerous friends there. I’m in Guelph. Have you seen that really tiny cemetery that intersects the 427 North and 401 West, I wouldn’t even know how you would pull in there.

@coco, we broke up. He came out about a month ago with some of his stuff (he was planning on moving fully at the end of Feb) and had a panic of epic proportion. He sort of “woke up” from a dream and realized he was not ready for all of this so left, with his stuff. And I haven’t heard too much from him since – we exchanged a few emails, but that’s it. So voila! Ended pretty abruptly and unexpectedly. Whattayagonnado. Unlike all prior break ups, I’m not hoping for a reconciliation or that he’ll change and want what I want. I’m maturing! (I mean, it sucked, and I was devastated and sick about for a bit, not to downplay that part. But I’m good now.)

Isn’t it weird that in 2015, we still take dead bodies, dress them up, put them in a box, and put the box in the ground? It seems so… Silly, and stinky – I mean ewww, a dead body decomposing in a box, that must wreak. And also wasteful. Some really good land is taken up by dead bodies! Plus it’s hella expensive. I want my hiers to keep as much of my estate as they can!

Ugh I hate our practices. I want to be buried in a way that’s healthy for the environment and not leeching chemicals into the ground. It is so fucked that that’s what we do. All people should be planted with a tree in a park. Think of all the space we give to burying the dead. Weird. So so so weird. Our bodies are just….bodies. Has anyone seen Lenin’s body or any other oddly preserved corpse?

    – I hope I didn’t offend anyone. These are just my big mouthed opinions.

@stonegypsy I love Jonathan Coulton! A little late, but I just saw what the link was. He’s most of the reason I listen to Ask Me Another (he’s the “house band”). That zombie song is one of my favorite, Brains? But the first one I ever heard of his was First of May. That’s stuck in my head pretty much the whole month of May every year.
