@stickelet I live in IL so I did it through a state organization (Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois). I am not sure if they are an Assoc with branches in each state, or if each state has their own independent organization(s) that does this. I didn’t stipulate what should be done with my remains after donation. Most of the time you go to med schools so students can practice on cadavers, in whole or in part. But sometimes they do other stuff with the donations. I think if you want to go to the actual Body Farm you have to arrange that with them.

I googled The Body Farm, and their page does have info on donating: http://fac.utk.edu/donation.html

So, my grandpa wanted his body to be donated to science, but when the time came, they didn’t want it. Very awkward. But, he’ll never know?

That’s weird….. was he embalmed accidentally first? I know on the card I keep in my wallet, it says in the event I make my way to a funeral home I am not to be embalmed or autopsied. So I wonder what’ll happen if I am murdered and they have to autopsy me for evidence, but like you say, I guess it won’t really be my problem…

I don’t know the specifics, but he was really old and was in a coma for a few weeks and had major health issues, plus he was cremated not long after. And my dad said something about places like that not taking the super elderly, but I forget why. Which is why is probably a good idea to know the policies of the place you want your body to go.

Speaking of negotiating and funeral costs etc. – when my grandpa died in the 70s he died on a Sunday. My mom went with Grandma to the funeral home and they had to open on Sunday so they had to charge my Grandma an extra fee for planning the funeral on a Sunday. And my mom said Grandma just kind of looked at them, like, you can’t pick the day you die and said “Well if he’d known it was going to cost extra I’m sure he would have held out till Monday.”

They ended up not charging her the fee.

@veritek – that’s awful, but I’m glad your Grandma managed to get out of the fee!

I recently saw a Shark Tank rerun with an “entrepreneur” with some messed up Celebration of Life business and as the sharks probed further into her presentation you could see them recoiling. Robert was one of the first ones out and pretty much called her an awful human being… because she was trolling for business with her dog at a hospice animal volunteer gig she had… it was disgusting.

Someone up around page 77 mentioned “Irish Twins” and here’s something I thought was funny, my daughter went to Ireland for NYE and met a handsome Irishman. Anyway they hit it off and talked and talked and talked and she mentioned Irish Twins to him. He knew nothing about it. Had NEVER heard of the term! She had to explain it to him. LOL Just thought that was ironic!

Anyway, WOW, I’m really impressed with this hitting 85 pages! And all because of a few colorful words going to and from commenters. What fun and CONGRATS TO DW on this milestone 🙂

All this talk of cemeteries reminds me of a story:

Back when I was 18, my friend and I snuck into a cemetery at night that had reports of being haunted. Half of the cemetery was old, and half of it was newer. We walked around the old part for a while, and when we were ready to leave, I noticed my cell phone was missing. As we searched through the cemetery we kept hearing this weird whirring noise and we couldn’t figure out where it was coming from.

We got closer to the ‘new’ side of the cemetery and saw this pinwheel spinning rapidly on top of one of the grave markers. It was making the whirring noise we had been hearing. The speed seemed a bit odd, because it was a very still night. So, out of curiosity, I went over to the pinwheel and stuck my hand right next to it. There was no breeze, and no reason the pinwheel should have been spinning that quickly. My friend and I were convinced it was a ghost, and as we kept searching for my phone, I got frustrated and annoyed with the noise. So I said, “Stop!”

    It did.

I became scared, and I said, “Okay, you can start again!” And, lo and behold, immediately the pinwheel started furiously spinning.

Thankfully, we found my cell phone soon after and got the heck out of there.

And that is the story of the time I snuck into a graveyard and encountered a paranormal pinwheel.

I also have a story about a haunted remote control.
