Recently a certain app requested a picture of my ID to prove that I am infact 18. I also recently edited ( for jokes ) that same picture of my ID , where I changed the date to make it appear as though I’m 21 to play a prank on one of my new friends. The issue here is that when sending the picture of my ID that I had to this app is that I sent the wrong picture , I sent the EDITED one. Does this count as a “fake ID” and therefore a crime, which can put me in jail? This was an honest mistake and started purely as a joke and is now eating me up inside. What is going to happen to me? I’m so scared. Anyone know anything about this 🥲

I don’t see this being a problem unless you lied to your employer or something. What was this app? It strikes me as not being an issue because they only needed you to be 18, which you are. They didn’t require you to be 21.

But I mean, in general, you should be more careful. You don’t want to be in a situation where you could do something that would jeopardize your employment or actually get you in trouble. I wouldn’t be messing around with my real ID.

Also I’ve never heard of an app asking for a picture of my ID? That sounds scammy, like they could be trying to steal your info, but maybe I’m just not thinking of why they’d ask for that.

For what a job? A licensing something? What app? I don’t understand. Did you sign something or click a box saying you weren’t lying under the penalty of federal or state laws? No? Then you’re probably fine. Delete that fake picture, faking your age isn’t funny, it can get you and other people in a lot of trouble, and is illegal in many cases. Representing yourself as 21+ when your -18 is a real big bad grey area of not usually good things sometimes. Be careful with where you share your ID info with, too. Never on social media, for example. Doesn’t your ID have your address?

And usually..not always there are huge differences in an 18 year old versus a 21 year old ID…at least in the states. How much did you “edit” it?

ID verification by app is quite common. For example, some alcohol delivery apps require you to scan your ID as part of verification checks that you’re old enough to order drinks.
