Hey everyone – since my little dog passed last week I’m finding it impossible to be in my living room and sit on the couch where we snuggled every night and where she chewed on her treats for 11 years. The couch is from ZGallerie and is also 11 years old and needs to be replaced anyway. Since this was a purchase I wasn’t planning to make for several years, I’m overwhelmed with options. I’d like to get a sofa and loveseat, fabric (not leather), and keep it under $2k if I can – but I’m not interested in going the Rooms 2 Go or very cheap route because I want something that will last. I priced out a lovely set from La-Z-Boy last night but they wanted to nickel & dime me for things like delivery (I live down the freaking street from the store) and “treating” the fabric for pet stains for when I get a new puppy, which annoyed me because those charges would add up to $500+ on top of the $2k I would pay for the set. Grr.

Anyone have any furniture recommendations? Where should I look?

Delivery fees will always be involved where the service is provided, even if they are delivering nearby, but you can treat fabrics and carpets and the like on your own should you choose to do so. If you live near the store selling the La-Z-Boy, why not schlepp it home with the help of your boyfriend and/or friends if that’s realistic and it is otherwise a reasonable price?

My couch is from IKEA. It’s super comfortable, and was maybe $700 or $800 when I got it. I’m not sure I’d go there as a first resort now that I have more money to work with than I did in my 20s, but they have some decent options at reasonable prices. And as a pet owner (and someone who fosters animals for rescues and shelters) I appreciate that I can very easily purchase new couch covers.

I like West Elm and imagine they’d have options within your budget.

So I don’t decorate, but my mom does, and she has bought a couple couches at Crate & Barrel. They have ppl that will help you match fabrics, rugs, & pillows.

The couch I had most recently was from West Elm I think, part of a living room that was from the model unit in our condos, and I got it. It was really nice, and my mom coveted it and took it (long story but we switched furniture). She’s got a Crate & Barrel sleeper loveseat in the office.

Have you checked out Bob’s Discount Furniture? I bought my sectional from there a few years ago. They had the cheapest price for the style I was looking for and it even ended up being the most comfortable out of the 3 or 4 models I checked out. Don’t be put off by the crappy sounding name, they actually have some high quality stuff.

Wayfair has up to 70% off right now: https://www.wayfair.ca/daily-sales/Stylish-Sofas-%26-Sectionals~E190554.html (that is the link to the Canadian site, but they also have a US site)

I’m with Copa on the delivery fee and fabric treating.

Anyway, I know a lot of people who buy furniture from West Elm and always seem to be happy with the purchase, so I’ll echo that choice. My cousin had a West Elm couch in her condo and now that she and her husband bought a place, it’s basically fully decked in West Elm.

You could buy like ten dogs for the same amount of money and the dogs would only appreciate in value.

@fyodor, yeah…unfortunately my heart is not ready for another dog yet. I started looking today and only wanted the one who looked like my Lottie. I definitely need time.

Meanwhile, I picked out a living room set this weekend at Klaussner. I’ll have it in about 30 days. 🙂

I was just teasing. I’d never seriously recommend more than eight dogs.

@fyodor my future MIL has 6 or 7 dogs – all Chinese Cresteds. She’s close to the limit! (Or above, in my opinion…)

Yeah, I’d love to see it, too! I’d love a new couch, but I’m just waiting it out with the one I have until I’m living somewhere more permanent. I could live my new couch dreams through you!
