Write a letter to Joe Manchin.April 19, 2021 at 12:36 pm #1040747LisforLeslieGuest
Obama had only 2 years with a Democratic controlled house. He passed the ACA. As a fairly junior senator he had only a small amount of political capital to spend and that’s what he chose. It’s not because he didn’t want to pass gun reform, it’s that he had nothing to offer up the people who had their hands out.
This is specifically why I voted for Clinton. She knew where all the bodies were buried (hell she put some of them there herself). She had enough dirt on people and was cunning enough to use that information to make things happen. She’s like a less charismatic LBJ.
I’ve no doubt that within the next 50 years we’re going to learn that all the people that bashed Trump and then reversed course (Graham I’m looking straight at you) was only because he dug up dirt and blackmailed people. And even then he couldn’t get rid of ACA.April 19, 2021 at 1:20 pm #1040795
Awwww but Hillary wasn’t “likeable.” Waahwahwah.April 19, 2021 at 1:31 pm #1040808BittergaymarkGuest
The truth is: gun control will never be anything more than a silly pipe dream. Why? Because far too many elected dems won’t ever vote for it as they are gutless cowards. Or worse.April 19, 2021 at 1:35 pm #1040813BittergaymarkGuest
Eh… The problem wasn’t so much that Hillary was unlikeable. But rather that she proved to be unelectable. She somehow failed to win what should have been a fucking cakewalk.April 19, 2021 at 1:45 pm #1040825

But yeah, sure, it was the women’s fault (DWS, HRC) and the Black man’s fault that everyone died.April 19, 2021 at 5:39 pm #1041067ronGuest
“Now we have a majority. (Again!) It’s a mighty slim one —- but it’s still a majority. But (once again!) NOTHING will happen regarding control. Nothing. Just wait.”
Of course not much, if anything, by way of gun control will pass. The filibuster would have to be killed before anything that can’t pass through Reconciliation can pass with just the 50 votes Dems have. The Rs will stick together on this. Even if filibuster is dumped, I can’t see Joe Manchin voting for significant gun control.April 21, 2021 at 10:56 am #1043341HelenGuest
A week or 2 afyer Sandyhook I was at the courthouse to get a marriage license. There was a line all the way around the block of people looking to get a gun license because they were afraid of gun restrictions being enacted. That’s when I knew we’d never have sensible gun policies. When we started making schools into fortresses in response to school shootings, I predicted they’d start shooting up grocery stores and parks. And that’s exactly where we are todayApril 21, 2021 at 11:00 am #1043343BittergaymarkGuest
On the flip side, the guilty verdict in Msp was a very much welcome surprise. I was pretty damn sure the jury would fail to convict and the city would explode all over again. So YAY! I was WRONG!April 21, 2021 at 1:17 pm #1043481Peggy RafuseGuest

I was listening to New York Times daily podcast today and here is the description of today’s subject (highly recommend a listen 4/22 episode named: How a ‘Red Flag’ Law Failed in Indiana)
Last spring, Brandon Hole’s mother alerted the police in Indiana about her son’s worrying behavior. Invoking the state’s “red flag” law, officers seized his firearm.
But Mr. Hole was able to legally purchase other weapons, and last week, he opened fire on a FedEx facility, killing eight people and then himself.
Why did the law fail?
