GuestThat’s ok, sorry! I just wasn’t sure what it was in response to or how trolling was related.
Kate
GuestWRT trolls, there are a lot of different varieties for sure. I have a FT job I manage to get done WHILE keeping the forums relatively free of idiots. I’ve seen a lot!

Kate
GuestAh, I get it now!
keyblade
MemberI’m counting this effort as me actively working to improve my writing. This was one of my New Year’s resolutions so thank you for the feedback, Kate!
Kate
GuestAnd I agree, although buzzfeed made it very clear that they were publishing the dossier even though it was unsubstantiated and probably unverifiable. I think they were crystal clear that they were just gonna dump it out there so the public could see what was in it and decide what they thought. They followed up with a good “what you need to know about it” story that was responsible.

MemberI haven’t even seen the original buzz-feed story because I’m trying to avoid news which seems to thrive on eliciting a reaction in their readers, thereby reinforcing the behavior of clicking through their news coverage instead of informing facts in a more boring way.
Kate
GuestThat’s fine… so you haven’t seen the report then? Just read the CNN piece that said there were a couple pages of apparently valid info?
I respect that, but I also think it’s good citizenship to read the report.

MemberI plan to when I get time! But I am pacing myself on news that I can’t actually act on. There have been a lot of things going on in politics today and I have to digest at the rate that I can. The world’s a big place, I have my own life to attend to, and I do better when set realistic goals for myself. I was being c-span junkie for awhile but it wasn’t good for me.
Kate
GuestYou should, it’s pretty interesting. Buzzfeed basically just accompanied it with a paragraph that said, make up your own mind.

MemberI think you might have super-powers, Kate. Seriously, you have a brilliant and formidable mind and such a large mental scope. I’m so impressed with your ability to process and retain the amount of information you do, even just on this site as a moderator.
I’m physically located in a slower part of the country that feels much more removed from the day to day of the inner belt-way (I’m pretty sure that is slang for D.C.). Finding balance is important for me because I’m prone to losing it so easily, I think.
It would be easy to stare out an internet window all day at the world-wide-web-of-thoughts but I know from experience that I need to draw some boundaries or I will lose myself in the vastness at the expense of being physically present and attending to myself, my friends, my husband, my children, and my community.
But I’ll look at buzzfeed before I go to sleep, because you convinced me, Kate.
Kate
GuestHa, thank you! I’m not that smart.
I just can’t go back to not paying attention. Too many people not paying attention led us to this bad place.
I would just say if you’re getting overwhelmed, it may be because you’re reading the comments and reactions to news articles or things that were shared on social media. I wouldn’t do that. I just scroll through and compare the stories on a few news sites, and use Snopes sometimes to fact check. I don’t read comments. I don’t participate in any sites but this one.
Maybe just subscribe to The Skimm or something so you can get your news in 5 minutes a day?
