Communication. Hands down that is what I’ve learned in the past 9 months of being a daily DW reader. Time and time again Wendy you have reminded us all to just communicate and that is an invaluable lesson.

Wendy, and this community, have taught me that I’m not that weird after all.
Lately I’ve been struggling a lot to stay positive, quit worrying, and in general be happy. I don’t know if it’s just SAD worse than usual this year or what, but it’s been a problem. But every time I come on this site and read letters or forum posts from people struggling with the same issues/problems that I am, I feel better. I feel like it’s okay not to have a big “life plan” all figured out, and it’s ok to have a LOT of failed relationships/hookups under my belt, and no one is perfect, and no one needs to be perfect.

Also, I have learned that I am definitely, DEFINITELY eloping if I ever get married! 🙂

Wendy has published very useful articles about gender/sexual violence even though it usually means people get uncomfortable/uninterested, comments go from 200 to 15 for those pieces and that’s bad for business.

@SDG – you reminded me that I did learn eloping is the way to go from this website! haha.

@Budj although eloping is a great way to go, don’t let some of the things you hear on here scare you away from a wedding. It really isn’t that bad, as long as you and your fiance get on the same page, and stick up for yourselves when people try to tell you what, and what not to do!

I’ve learned from Wendy that communication is key! and I have gotten an amazing understanding of my fiancee, and how she can just generally think differently from me on certain situations, and it truly has let me have better conversations with my SO when one of us seems to be upset about something. I have also learned from the commenters how diverse people really can be, and how as long as you keep an open mind you can get a long with most people out there. Some people can’t be fixed though, and it is funny to watch them make assholes of themselves all of the time on here, and not even know it!

Wendy taught me how to MOA. And how to again, set my intention and go back to it when I stumble. She also has provided an amazing community of support. I feel like the people on here are truly my friends, the ones who want the best for me, but aren’t always going to be my yes team because they have the collective wisdom to show me the error of my ways.

@SDG–How are things going for you now?

Jeez I want to take back my original comment all these other comments are reminding me of the things that I have engrained into myself since interacting here, haha.

I’m with you on this one, Budj, DW has definitely taught me that eloping is the way to go! Though, I did love Wendy’s central park wedding. If I were planning a wedding in NYC, I’d probably look back at her City Wendy post about her wedding and copy it.

In addition to publishing and commenting on one of my letters, Wendy answered a little problem I freaked out over and emailed her about – and in record time! Plus of course: I get so much out of every letter she posts and comments on. I think what I’ve gained the most from a year’s worth of Wendy is a new mindset – a new way to think about and analyze relationships, interactions, how I handle things, how I want to handle things, etc. I’ve got to be a better person because of that. Though, it’s also made me realize how far I have to go to be the cool, confidant, and in control woman I want to be.

    I love this topic!

I agree with Budj…Wendy’s advice has really taught me how to be more open-minded. Before I was a regular commenter (and sometimes-guest columnist) on this site, I was pretty closed-minded about relationships. While I still think there are certain aspects of relationships that universally “right” and wrong,” I’ve learned so much about how other people think and behave, and it’s made me more open-minded both on this site and in my day-to-day life.

Plus, Wendy gave me the opportunity to write my own advice letters to readers…which was AWESOME. It was so rewarding and fulfilling, and only served to further solidify my desire to become a therapist. In fact, I don’t know if I would have come to that realization without this site.

So to Wendy – thanks for helping me figure out what I want to dedicate my LIFE to. You rock.

Oh, and DW helped me discover ReginaRey. That’s a huge bonus to my life! (RR, here’s where you say, “oh, and DW helped me to discover Addie Pray, who brings a ray of sunshine to the world.” Um, feel free to edit that.)
