At my company we submit vacation request and I have never heard back if “approved” or “not approved” we just assume approved unless we hear other wise. I’m salary. I know hourly get’s “approved” or “not approved”.

I agree – try to call or drop in on them in person. Can you buy a refundable ticket? Or does that cost too much extra? Or travel insurance? That’s always an option here in the states, never used it though. Not sure what all it covers.

I went to go see the controller at lunch today, and he said there’s nothing he can do. It’s with the GM for approval. And she’s not around, she’s OOO for meetings all day.

I’m salaried as well, and I have 22 “personal days” as part of my contract but it still has to be approved by management.

Yeah, at my last job we never needed approval, but at this very small company we do. Coverage is more of a concern.

I’ve gotten nowhere with this. She was gone all afternoon so no chance for me to talk to her.

I’ll guess I’ll send her a message on Slack tomorrow and request a meeting.

You could Slack her and ask for a few minutes on her calendar to make sure your PTO was approved for March. She might just say, “yeah, ok” on the spot to avoid setting up a meeting.

I still think you’re better off trying to stalk her physically, unless everyone replies to Slack in your office. I guess I’m able to get responses from my CEO and owner when they’re locked in meetings, but that’s on client-related stuff. Not sure if they’d ignore it if it was about PTO. That said, CEO is super quick about approving the requests.

Just get it in writing. She sounds a bit disorganized and overcommitted. Make sure you have either on Slack or email – some kind of agreement.

Well I finally got her to schedule a meeting and my vacation request was denied.

Did she explain why? Can you go for a week instead of 3 weeks?

Wow! Did she say why she’s denying it when it was previously approved? I’ve never had a PTO request denied, not even by my a-hole supervisor at the last place.

There were a number of reasons…

    1) We’ve taken on two new big clients and they need me here to be the digital lead when we begin executing on those accounts. I need to be here in the office for presentations and meetings.

    2) Because work on these accounts is expected to start in March and April, no new vacation requests are being approved for those months.

    3) Only senior management are allowed to take more than one week off at a time (which I was never told and if this is true why didn’t she say so back in December when I talked to her about this?).

She told me to resubmit my request for one week for the beginning of May and we can look at the possibility of extending that time by allowing me to work remotely, depending on what’s going on in the office closer to that time.

I am pretty upset. Like really, really upset. I understand why they don’t want me to be away during that time since I’m the apparently the lead on these accounts but I’m so upset that I can’t even take one week until May. It’s really hard… my boyfriend and I have never been apart for that long, and we have been planning a trip together during that time.

Wow, that’s really bad communication on their part. If no one can take PTO in March or April, they should have announced that generally so people could plan around it. Those are two pretty big vacation months!

Is the last week of February out?
