    My dad is a doctor so I grew up around the medical field too, worked in his office when I was a teenager, etc. 90% of a doctor’s office is how good the staff is at staying organized and keeping the doctor on task, doctors are not checking their own messages or browsing charts for patients who don’t have an appointment scheduled, everything you’re dealing with here would all be handled by the staff.
    That “waiting for the Dr to sign” sounds like an excuse for “I forgot to put it in his pile of things to sign and didnt remember until you called.” Drs sign stuff like that all day every day and if it was an emergency like this they should have gotten it to him right away. This staff clearly can’t keep it together and the Dr is not going to be able to fix that easily. I’d say get a new doctor.Now that you know what medication you need, dosage, etc, should be pretty easy to get another doctor to prescribe it.

    Also the fact that you can’t get refills without a new script every time sounds like bullshit to me. Its heart medication, not vicodin.

    Taramonster my OB was the same. Actually told me in front of the whole waiting room my baby had no heartbeat. As if it wasn’t bad enough I was irate. My ex pretty much blew up at the doctor, took him aside and lost it. I filed complaints but no idea if anything happened. Made me ill to even call them to get my records. Luckily my OB here is amazing. I really like her and her staff. We likely will he moved before i have baby but I really would be happy if we were still here and I was still able to continue with her through pregnancy.

    No the heart meds are not the one I can’t get without a new rx, it’s a different one, not pain killer, and it is the law. And ya he didn’t not sign it. They later told me he signed it the day after I called.

    Agree that you have to sit down and tell him. Face to face. Email won’t work. That he is a good doctor but a bad medical practice manager and you aren’t going to allow his staff to put your life at risk any longer. At that meeting, request a copy of your entire medical record.

    I would change doctors. I mean, I doubt that kind of incompetence is going to change very much after you speak to him.

    I agree with the advice about meeting with him about this and explaining that his staff needs to shape up or you are done. But I also consider this similar to job in that searching for one while you have one is better. Maybe you can look for another doctor who has a similar mindset in terms of how they treat you AND a good staff, and in the mean time, see if your doctor’s office makes changes? It’s not like you have to decide yes or no immediately — you can look around until you find one you feel that you’d prefer going to.

    Also, if he’s not in charge of staffing, there would be an office manager that you could talk to instead. Maybe find out the office set up first?

    Thanks for the advice guys. I have a appointment on the 6th when I’ll also need a refill so I’ll do both then. It’s hard to consider walking away after it took so long. I know though that I just likely may have to. It’s a really big practice so I don’t doubt he doesn’t handle the staff but it still just doesn’t work. I also know they just think I’m annoying now. When really they are the annoying ones b

    It also might be helpful to set up a phone conference with the charge nurse and whoever oversees the reception staff prior to your appointment on the 6th. Those two might actually have more oversight of the staff than your doctor if it’s a large practice.

    Daughter of an RN, have had chronic illness since childhood, and we both have worked in health care, and filed complaints, heres my advice.

    the doc likely doesnt know how bad the situ is with the staff. Ive also filed complaints that went nowhere or i was given a very generic “sorry for your bad experience” letter at most.

    write a letter. have someone proof read it, prepare it as professional as possible, to the doc of the practice. Docs want to know if their oractice sucks, and with a letter, they can take it more seriously, because next you may erite a letter to higher ups than the doc and no doc wants higher ups on his back for bad care.

    explain whats been happening , list dates, phone calls times and with who, and what you experience when you run out. details/bullets are good. start keepimg a journal now if you havent already to document these things. make it as formal and professional and mater of fact as possible. at the end say you are considering leaving for anoyher doc and really prefer not do so because you like him/her so much.( I get it, tarting over with a new doc is super hard.!) But Id rather let you know the difficulties I am having than just leave without telling you. ” this says you want to work “with”him to resolve this. or, if he thinks you need to part ways, if he has any suggestions for a good match for you. maybe this doc does really not want u as a patient anymore, and if thats the case, you want to know so you can transfer records and move on. if so, sign for records transfr in person asap. plus you have a paper trail that you tried to resolve it with this doc before you switched, so that you arent labeled a problem patient.

    emails tend to be ignored. youd think eith a paper trail that wouldnt be the case but thats been my experience. digital never works how u wat it too i guess. the art of wrting a formal poison pen letter still has its strengths in healthcare at least. plus you have enuf evidence (hopefully yoive documented) for filing a complaint. 2weeks is outrageous. doc needs to be firmly on blast to chnge these thigs pronto. its, his practice, hes ultimately responsible.

    I am late to this but I would say to leave. If his office is as bad as you describe, there are basic operational and customer service issues that won’t get fixed just because you complained. It’s likely that the others have complained already and he had been unable or unwilling to make things work.

    A letter would be opened by the staff – and not necessarily given to the doctor. You would need to hand it directly to the doctor.

    Definitely schedule a visit and talk to your doctor and tell him everything you told us. A solution is to change your medication so you can automatically get refills without a script each time. See if he is willing to do this.
