Updates: “Love Me, Love My Dog” Responds

It’s time again for “Dear Wendy Updates,” a feature where people I’ve given advice to in the past let us know whether they followed the advice and how they’re doing now. Today, we hear from “Love Me, Love My Dog” whose new boyfriend was jealous of her dog. “He is often moody and will regularly apologize to me for being a ‘grumpy old man’ when he says things that hurt my feelings, often about my dog and how much he doesn’t like her, etc. I’ve been agonizing over how much longer to give this relationship or what the right course of action should be.” Keep reading to see whether the dog-hater is still around.

Thanks so much for your advice and for everyone’s feedback! My (now ex) boyfriend and I amicably broke up about two weeks ago, after nearly 8 months of dating. I wanted to be sure that I wouldn’t regret it if we did break up, and eventually we got to a point where we both outlined what we wanted in life and those things just didn’t match up. He is looking at different career options (possibly overseas) and I am looking for a man who loves dogs just as much as I do – and one who loves my little dog in particular! Hopefully, that’s not too tall of an order. My ex and I remain good friends, and that’s just fine by me. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders actually. Anyway, I wanted to give an update because I was encouraged by everyone’s comments and support. Thank you, and wish me luck as I’m back in the dating game again!

You gave it a good go — much longer than most of us would. Here’s to dog-loving gentlemen in your future!

Oh man this update is perfect timing for the forum on rehoming a cat today. Nothing gets my underpants in a wad more than shitty pet owners. Good for you LW, trust me you will find a guy who will not only love your dog but will pick him up from day care when you work late, take him out first thing in the morning when you’re sleepy, spoon with him on the couch at the exclusion of you, and send his friends and family embarrassing pictures of the dog in his elf costume.

Agreed! My fiancé texts me cute photos of my cats when he’s home without me, coaxes them to snuggle with him, and makes up silly songs about them. I was hoping for a guy who would merely tolerate them, but seeing how much Llama Guy loves them makes me love him even more!

    2. Oh LAWD! Just checked that thread… I’m going to have to go get my soapbox!

Skimmed the old letter. Did starpattern ever come back? Are you lurking starpattern?

      I know, I miss her! I somehow don’t think she’s coming back though. 🙁

      1. That sucks.

  3. I’m having a rough day today and my dog came over, put her paw on my arm, nuzzled in and cried with me for a while. That’s why dogs are awesome.

    1. Aww this comment makes me sad that I’m not home on the couch with my dog right now. Shame that whole “having to work for a living” thing. If only I could get paid to snuggle with my doggie all day.

      1. Luckily I can, most of the time! I get to work from home a lot, which is an envious perk to my job which has been outrageously stressful lately. I have to go into the office now and fake it for a while until I can get back to my snuggle buddy 🙂

  4. I’m dog sitting for my boyfriend this week. I love his dog, but my cat is not amused.

I knew my husband was the one for me when one morning as I was leaving his house to go back to my house to get get ready for work, my dog wouldn’t come with me. It was his day off so she just hung out with him all day.

  6. Othello’s in between school semesters, and is relaxing at home. He just called to tell me the kitties were being really cute and I should come home and love them. He’s a jerk for rubbing it in, but I love how much he loves our little guys. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

How a potential life partner interacts with your four legged babies is a good indicator of his or her character. Dogs, cats, birds, etc have needs that must be attended, occasionally at inconvenient times. Our 5 permanant resident cats plus foster kittens in the spring take up a lot of our time but add tons of joy to our lives. They’re exponentially worth the effort.
