I have also never been to a bridal shower, though I have been invited to several. (I’ve turned them down because of travel/logistics.) A friend of a friend had a bridal shower AND a wedding shower, and I’m like… aren’t they basically the same thing?

A friend of mine getting married in June, her wedding is a destination wedding. I probably could have gone to her bridal shower, but I didn’t want to pay to extend my rental car reservation for three days at holiday rates to go to an event that would require me to spend money on a gift for a couple that’s in their 30s when I have to travel to the wedding where I’d bring another gift. It felt like too much. My mom went and said people were acting kinda bonkers. Like I guess the groom showed up at the end just to open presents and thank everyone (didn’t know this was a thing?) and she asked him to take a photo of all the women together, and other people freaked out because HE’S THE GROOM, YOU CAN’T ASK HIM TO TAKE A PHOTO BECAUSE HE’S THERE TO BE HONORED. Not sad I missed it.

In any case, I wouldn’t have a shower. If/when I get married, we’d have two sets of perfectly good stuff. I want some nice new knives but plan to buy them for myself sometime this year. (On which note, if anyone has any recommendations, I’m all ears!)

My dog is a super picky eater *with dog food*. We’ve tried a few different brands of grain-free food (assuming that was best) and none excite him. I guess they’re now saying grain-free foods are linked to heart disease in dogs. One of my dog mom friends freaked out and threw away their food. I’m going to switch again when we finish this bag, but am not sure what to switch to. And if I’m opening it up to food that I previously thought was lesser quality because it wasn’t grain-free, he might even like the taste better.

What kind of food do the dog owners here feed their dogs? The shelter I got my dog from (and volunteer at) stresses high quality organic grain-free dry food. So that’s what I bought! Well, my posse of dog moms (my dog’s siblings’ owners and I have become friends, haha) have slowly had their vets tell them that grain-free isn’t better. And, in fact, can actually be bad unless your dog has an issue that requires a grain-free diet. Curious if anyone else has heard this?

On the subject of dogs, mine spent two weeks with my mom while I was on vacation. She doted on him (and put chicken in his every meal). He seems so down since we came back home, won’t really play at all. I think he misses her. The only times he’s seemed cheery are when we run into his dog friends on walks.

What’s the occasion? One of my coworkers got her fiance a cocktail subscription box as a gift once and I filed it away as a gift idea for BG.

@MoneyPenny We haven’t been dating nearly as long, and like I’ve mentioned, he travels quite a bit for work during the week. We normally do overnights on weekends at his place. I have a dog, so any weeknight sleepovers are at my place when he’s not on the road. We generally spend more time at his place, and this is fine, but I wouldn’t like if I felt like I was living my life out of a suitcase. I’m happy with this amount for now, which is good because it won’t change unless/until he has a new job.

And yes, come to Chicago. We have beautiful architecture, a lovely lake, and ridiculously good food.

That is a great story, @TheHizzy. I, too, would remember the feeling of a guy picking me up at the airport with tacos.

Very excited for spring/summer and exploring a new area. I’ve lived in the same neighborhood the entire four years I’ve been here. I love it and will miss it if/when I leave, but am excited to explore a new neighborhood in the way you only really do when you live there. The one thing that sucks (not sure if I mentioned on this thread) is that BG recently found out that starting late this month or early next, he’s on the road for work literally every week through the end of June. This was the last straw for him at work — people keep leaving without being replaced so his travel schedule has been increasingly bonkers — and he’s now on the hunt for something new. So maybe all my expectations of sunshine and patios together won’t be what I’m imagining.

He’s just north of Irving Park, but not far from where you were! We do spend more time at his place since he has more space than I do + a fenced yard that benefits my doggo. We were a slow burn kinda couple, gradually spending more and more time together, and I still feel like I don’t know his area at all because it’s been cold since we decided we were exclusive. I don’t have a car so I really like ease of access to everything where I live (also the draw of Southport Corridor for me). He’s still in a walkable area, but everything I could ever need or want is closer to me from my building than from his.

Bodega Sur was a blur, though I’m sure it was good. (I may or may not have had more wine than I should’ve on our first date. Ooooops!) I’ll have to check out the market. He lives a 10-minute walk from there. I love that area. I wish he was slightly closer to Southport Corridor, but it’s a great area and I’m excited to explore it more when the weather warms up.

We recently-ish tried a Venezuelan place near him, BienMeSabe on Montrose, at someone’s recommendation and I didn’t really like it. I was shocked when I saw all the great reviews of it online. Might just be me though!

First date was at Bodega Sur, if that’s the one you’re thinking about, and Tango Sur is the restaurant! As an aside, it looks like Folklore is also under the same ownership, which my hair dresser is always raving about.

@ktfran I think that’s a really cute gesture and low-key way to acknowledge an anniversary. BG and I went to our first date at a wine/tapas bar that’s under the same ownership as an Argentinian steakhouse that’s (I think) next door. We’ve already talked about going to the steakhouse this summer as a nod to one year of dating. (As an aside, I was single for so long that it feels kinda crazy to imagine celebrating an anniversary again.)

@TheHizzy How did you and FMH meet again? That’s a great relationship motto, haha.

I remember my anniversary with my second long-term boyfriend, but have never felt compelled to make it a password. When I started online dating after him and realized it was kind of like being on a hamster wheel of early dates and out, I stopped going into first dates with any kind of expectation that it’d lead to a relationship. I remember general timeframes, like “met in summer, fizzled in fall.”
