Happy Friday (the 13th)! I’ve had both kids home with me today since we have no sitter on Fridays for Joanie, and Jackson is sick. (Related: Since Jackson started going to school full-time in September, I have had a runny nose and itchy throat almost every single day while he, on the other hand, has been sickish only half that time). Anyway, I thought that, on a sick day at home, I might be able to coax Jackson into watching some TV (specifically, some G-rated movies on HBO Go), but, alas, the kid who hates TV could only be suckered into watching it for about ten minutes. The rest of the day has included cooking lessons, Legos, books, and lots of YouTube videos (don’t ask me why he loves YouTube videos but hates TV — I can’t figure it out). During the all-too-brief moments when both kids where either successfully occupied (Jackson) or napping (Joanie), I got a little holiday shopping done.

Just an FYI if you’re also doing some online holiday shopping in stolen moments here and there, JCrew is having a 25% off everything sale through the weekend (I love this shirt for a guy, as well as these super soft long-sleeve Ts for layering), Modcloth has a $20 off $100 promo going (perfect opportunity to stock up on fancy hosiery, accessories, and decor for the holidays.), and Gap is having a 40% off everything sale (I know it’s silly to buy a 4-month-old shoes — this is my usually footwear of choice for babies — but come on now). Any other sales you’re aware of? And what, besides potentially doing some holiday shopping, are you up to this weekend?

Oh, and P.S.: If you’re looking for a host/hostess gift for Thanksgiving, my friend Mary’s caramels are the bomb.

    I keep forgetting it’s Friday the 13th!

Tonight, the guy and I are going to a super fancy restaurant, goosefoot. When we first started dating, he told me a fun date would be for me to make a reservation at a place I really wanted to go, send him screenshot of said reservation, and he’s take me. So, that’s tonight! I was debating on whether or not to make it for a pricey place, but I did with the caveat I buy the wine. It’s byob.

The rest of the weekend, I’ll be catching up with friends. That’s about it.

I CAN NOT WAIT FOR DINNER!

Wendy – my nieces love YouTube videos too.

I started holiday shopping but it still doesn’t feel like the holidays yet to me. I am having a really hard time remembering it is November and Thanksgiving in two weeks. Hopefully celebrating with friends gets me in the spirit. Right now I still have Halloween decorations out. I’m having book club this week at my house and this is the first time these friends are coming over to my house. I find this a little stressful, it’s like having a boyfriend over for the first time. And I’m making this side dish as one of the appetizers: http://www.theclevercarrot.com/2012/10/roasted-brussels-sprouts-with-quinoa-cranberries-miso/. If you’re looking for something different for Thanksgiving as a side it’s really good!

And those caramels! I’ve sent them twice now and both times the people loved them.

Ugh. I’ve had a rough week with a bad head cold and lots of side projects and complications popping up. This weekend I need to catch up on work and start my Christmas shopping.

I’m starting to feel like I have so many balls in the air and most of them are now at a state where I have no control (waiting on other people or things). It’s rather frustrating. Good news is, most of it should be sorted by December. For now, I’m trying my hardest to focus on the things I can control and appreciate the small, positive things that are happening.

About a month ago the car that we hated died… Luckily, we my in-laws were selling their car around the time we were buying and we were so happy to avoid buying from a stranger/dealer. Sadly now, the other old car (thankfully not the new car) won’t pass emissions, and it would require a complete engine rebuild to get it to pass. The repair shop tried a couple of things and told us to drive it for a few days to see if it helps, but it’s not looking good. They also said they’d help us advocate to the county to get an emissions waiver, but they said that those are rarely issued. So, it looks like we’ll end up buying two new cars in a month. It’s a good thing Othello will graduating next month and can hopefully find a (good) job quickly to help us rebuild our savings.

All I have to say is that it’s been a fuck of a week work-wise here (two weeks, actually) and there’s really no end in sight. I am so, so, so glad that it is Friday. Looking forward to a weekend of Mr. MJ grilling me dinner, watching college football and having champagne with friends.

And, I haven’t even started holiday shopping yet. Eek!

Seems with kids in the home, there’s always one that has a runny nose . . . or something going on with one or the other. Good luck Wendy! I’ve had a few busy weekends the last few weeks so this weekend, I’m hoping to get in some early holiday shopping, and maybe catch a movie. I recently bought a beginner’s guide to tarot reading and I’m also studying about crystals, which I’m finding very interesting.

I think I only mentioned it here briefly, but I have a car and a driver’s license now! I passed my test last month and my parents bought me a 2008 VW Jetta (used of course) that I now LOVE taking out. Some things about driving are still scary (someone almost pulled out in front of me without looking last night and I’m not quite ready for the highway), but I try to go somewhere every day and enjoy my freedom. I honestly wish now that I hadn’t waited so long… (And for anyone wondering, I do have to pay my parents back for the car, but they’re willing to take small payments over time since I’m not making a lot of money right now.)

Other than that, I am hoping to change careers at some point. I am at a good company right now, but I work in customer service and just do not want to do that forever. There is a chance I can go into another department, but there’s not a lot of turnover so I decided to form a backup plan. Anyway, I am starting to think about going into the hospitality field, specifically doing event management. I’m aware of the downsides, but it’s a fairly stable field for employment and has so many different branches for growth/opportunity.

As far as this weekend, I don’t have too much planned. I shopped the Sephora sale today for their beauty insiders, but even with makeup, I’m getting to the point where I feel like I have plenty. I’ve accumulated a lot since getting seriously into makeup seven months ago, and I am thinking…OK that’s enough for now! Once all the sales fuss dies down, I may stop buying makeup for a few months, save replacing anything that empties or gets damaged.

I’m also heading to hockey games this weekend, and there’s a good chance I’ll run into my now ex-crush. I will try to avoid him, however.

Yes, indeed…starting the online shopping tonight, I hope. The credit union sent me a new card with a more secure chip (whatever that means, in your credit card?!) and so I had to wait until I got a couple of things from Amazon before I could activate the new one. They came today, so let the shopping begin!
Oh, and those shoes, those shoes….wish they’d had them when my daughter was little (and hey, you have to put something on their feet and it might as well be super cute! Which those definitely are!)

@Wendy Have you tried the Magic School Bus? It shows kids how the world works and both of my kids loved it. It might appeal to Jackson because I get the sense that he is very bright and loves to see how things work.

My family had the worst Friday the 13th. My grandfather died the night before and we had to inform his last surviving older brother on his birthday the 13th. It was so difficult because his death was sudden and we couldn’t inform many people that he was even in the hospital. I just feel so bad to tell him such terrible news.
