Weekend Open Thread

Screen Shot 2016-05-13 at 10.13.46 AM

Happy Friday, everyone! How was your week? Mine was a little bit of a mixed bag, but I’d say the balance swung more toward “good” than not good. The weather improved over last week (really, there was no place to go but up in that regard), so that was nice. And we had three wonderful nights over the weekend and the early part of the week in which both kids slept all the way through and Drew and I got, like, seven or eight hours of solid sleep. I’m not sure that’s ever happened. Definitely not three nights in a row, anyway. I felt like a new woman! But then Joanie starting cutting five teeth at the same time and has been absolutely miserable and inconsolable and awake throughout the night screaming her little head off. Those three nights of sleep though — they were really nice.

What else? We’re getting ready for summer around here. I just signed up Jackson for summer camp (three days a week of art camp, making paper mache masks and documentaries and fairy houses–he’s very excited), and I ordered some new summer duds for both kids (Old Navy is having a 40% off sale today, FYI; Five dollar shirts? Okay!). Jackson had been asking for these shoes for the last couple of weeks and I was sort of dragging my feet a little because, well, I was a little nervous he might get made fun of and wanted to make sure he really wanted them before pulling the trigger. He kept asking for them so I said: “What will you do, Jackson, if someone says your shoes look like girl shoes?” And he said, “Someone probably will say that because they are girl colors. But I’ll just say, ‘They’re boy colors, too, because I’m a boy and I like them!'” The shoes should arrive in a few days and I think they’re gonna look pretty cool on him.

Anyway, that’s it for now. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll see you back here on Monday.

PS Those were my Mother’s Day flowers pictured above and they’re still going strong five days later! Aren’t they pretty? They’ve made me smile all week long. Need a little pick-me-up? Go out and get yourself some flowers!

5 teeth?! AHHHHH! Good thing you got those few nights of solid teeth. Mine is just now cutting his first tooth (well, he has been for about a week now) and I’m terrified of what will happen with the next one(s). He’s been super clingy but mostly not too bad so I know it can only go downhill. I hope her teeth come in quickly and you can get some rest again!

LOL Solid teeth. AKA solid sleep. Oh boy. I’ve been sick all week so I think I need some solid sleep too.

I have had an exhausting week. 3 days after my boy started daycare for the first time, he got a cold. So that means Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights, I was up 10,000 times to hold him and suck his snot out. That was particularly hard because it’s been a tough work week, and I’ve been up ’til midnight or 1 am working after the baby’s gone down. I’m pretty much a zombie right now. It’s OK because it’s Friday! And I’m going to cut out a little bit early. Because I have a conference call on Sunday afternoon now, so I’ll make up my time then. Right? Right.

Very sorry to hear Joanie is having a tough time with teething! My baby has 4 teeth now; he drools a lot and likes to chew on things – he’s worse than a puppy! – but I’ve been spared the cries, thank goodness. I guess he’s handling teething OK then. Oh oh oh oh my sister just sent me a video of my baby saying mama! I’ve never heard him say mama before! I mean, it’s more of a “muh muh muh muh muh muh” sound. But I’ve never heard that either. It made me tear up a bit.

Ugh, the first daycare R was in, he was sick *ALL THE TIME* – it was absurd! And she tried to make me feel like it was something wrong with him. But now that he’s at a new one, he hasn’t been sick at all. Of course I’ve had a cold all week so I’m sure he’ll get it soon to go with his cute little tooth popping out.
      .
First tooth story (cause why not?) – the ridge is poking out but the rest of the tooth is still in the gum. But that ridge is sharp as shit! He bit his finger the other day and as a response he threw the toy he was holding at my head and glared at me like I’m the one who bit him. What the hell?!

Oh that stinks about daycare! Glad that’s not an issue anymore.

When does throwing begin? My boy will be 8 months on Saturday (eek!) but hasn’t learned to throw things. Drop things? Yes, but not throw. I keep giving him a ball and trying to get him to throw it, nope.
        *
I really like the daycare where he’s going, but it’s just a “back-up” daycare. So the kids there don’t go there regularly and are constantly changing. He seems to always be the youngest; I’m hoping the “big” kids (like, 1 – 1.5 years old) teach him (good) things. The other day I walked in and there was this little baby on his tummy staring up at us. I plopped N down next to him and said “oh look a little baby for you to play with” and then this baby – who I pegged as 5 months – pushed himself from tummy to sitting and then rolled over to the other side, back on his tummy and crawled across the room faster than I could walk!!!!!! It freaked me out!!!!! Turns out, the baby is 8 months old (but I swear, only 1/2 the size of N, which is more a reflection of how big N is – huge). But man, N can’t do any of that! He gets in crawling position and then starts whining. And that’s about it, haha.

R started throwing around 7.5 months. My friend who has a just-turned-9 month old said he is just now learning to throw. So looks like it could happen to you anytime now 😉 I wouldn’t worry about stuff like that or crawling or anything. Turns out, they do it whenever. My little overachiever started crawling at 4 months and its not what its cracked up to be. Now he thinks he wants to walk and I’m thinking of tying him down.
He’s in a small in home daycare (right now she only has 2 kids including mine but has an open spot for a 3rd) so that’s nice. He’s been the only one there all week.

Joanie bit her tongue this week with her first tooth and it bled and bled. At this moment, she is screaming her head off but drew just got home (yes, he gets home early, thank god; the benefit to going in early and skipping lunch) and he’s walking around with her trying to soothe her a little.

Addie, I really feel for you getting up all night with a sick baby and having a tough work week on top of it. Hope you’re able to catch up on some rest this weekend.

Oh my gosh, the exchange about the shoes between you and Jackson is awesome. Right on kid! Also, I agree about flowers. Every time I deep clean my apartment, I go out and buy a bouquet or two from Trader Joe’s. They make me smile.

+1 to Trader Joe’s! My husband gets 2 bouquets from there every couple weeks. They are cheap and so long-lasting. As they start to droop I get rid of the ones that are done and just combine the two bouquets.

Well, I posted but it disappeared

Wendy-I love Jackson’s shoes. And I really like the conversation you had with him about them. I’d say about 50% of the time I go to Costco, I pick up flowers. I can make those ones last just under two weeks by cutting the stems on a diagonal every other day. And getting rid of the flowers the die early. The bouquet gets smaller by the day, but it works!

I’m on my own with the dog this weekend, which I’m kind of looking forward to. There will be lots of errands to do, but considering the next few weeks we are out of town a lot, I think I will enjoy having the time to do the errands without feeling like a chicken with my head cut off.

And! I’m officially a sponsored athlete! So I get to go pick up my swag this weekend. Yaaay.

Weekend should be pretty tame. I had ALL of my bills due in one paycheck due to the wonky pay cycle. Super annoying. AND I’ve been shopping too much. Bad bad bad. I’ve been feeling on edge lately about some things, which causes me to soothe myself by buying shit I don’t need. Yuck.

It’s two days after my due date and I’m still pregnant. And pissed. And stressed about the pressure I’m going to get next week to have an induction that I really don’t want. 🙁 I’ve been eating a lot of ice cream and chocolate.

I hope you can avoid what you don’t want, but if you do have to have an induction, try not to worry about it too much. I had one with joanie and it was NBD at all. She was happy, I was happy, and all was well.

      Good luck!!

Thanks Wendy. I’ll try to accept it if it comes to that. What I’m really more worried about is that at my age, induction is much more likely to lead to C-section. 🙁 If it was just going to be an induction it wouldn’t be so bad, but C-section terrifies me. Plus I want to do it without drugs again which is very hard once you’ve had an induction. But at some point it will be unsafe to keep going with the pregnancy and I’ll have to make that call (stillbirths are higher at my age too, which is why they push induction). It’s so stressful. I just wish she would come!

I had an emergency c-section (so that no one would die – so not exactly a calm moment ) and it wasn’t that bad. I’m sure scheduled ones are even better. Actual surgery no big deal at all. Recovery you need to go a little slow the first couple of weeks but you should be going slow anyway, mama. How the baby gets here always seems important before the baby gets here… But not so much after. Sending you happy vibes for a safe and quick delivery according to your plan but just a little reassurance that your worst case scenario isn’t that bad.

Sorry RR. I feel slightly bad about my post above before I read this. But only slightly because the end is fucking uncomfortable and I’m done being pregnant. I had 5 hours of inconsistent but painful contractions the other night from 2-7:30 AM and really hoped they were going to turn into labor. Nope. It was such a tease and made for a very miserable Wednesday. Here’s hoping both our babies make an appearance in the very near future!

Hahahah np, I hope for your sake that yours comes early! I started getting cramps like 2 weeks ago, so I’ve been sitting here for two weeks just waiting. It sucks. I didn’t really think mine would be early since my first baby was 10 days late. I have my fingers crossed for this weekend, but I also had them crossed for last weekend and the one before. :/ Well, they can’t stay in there forever, right?! 🙂

I’m enjoying a delicious coffee by myself at some markets on a beautiful autumn day before work tonight. I’ve had opens at the gym all week, meaning I had to get up at 3.15am to be at work by 4.30 so a gentle morning is suiting me fine. Husband has work today but has invited our friend over tonight so after work I’m definitely hitting the wine rack!

We have nearly finalised our trip over there too which is exciting. Only new York and Pittsburgh to go!

My aging dog with osteo-arthritis, whose steroidal meds have been making him have to pee constantly (we’re weaning him off it and onto some weird liquid med that smells like chicken) was not here last night – he’s at the dog “camp,” – so I slept until almost 7!!! My husband is in Saratoga for work but will be back this afternoon. We’re going out for my birthday. I’ll get my hair done at 12 and then go over to this hotel that’s a scene, and check in. He’ll meet me there and we’ll get ready and then go to the new place I’m excited to try, this speakeasy that looks like a hair salon in front. Then, depending on what drugs I’m on, we may go to the 80s night at this dance club where a friend is DJing. Another night without worrying about the dog. It’s sunny and 75 today too! Boston is only nice about 15 weeks out of the year, so this is good luck.

Thanks Keyblade! On my actual birthday I came home from work and wrote a will, because I was going to drink the bottle of Patron Reposado my work buddy gave me and take 2,000mg of Valium. But it turned out just writing the will was soothing, and we went for a walk and got a martini instead, and I got up and went to work again. I’m mildly suicidal, but not in a “tell my boss” kind of way. I’ll make it.

Well I’d missed you and I’m glad you didn’t do anything drastic. I need to write a will… It seems unnecessary but it would be nice to avoid probate and have something in place if my husband and I both died at the same time for whatever reason. It seems unlikely enough that I haven’t gotten around to it but I should…

Yeah, apparently writing it on a sheet of notebook paper doesn’t count, you need to go through legal channels or it doesn’t mean anything. I found that out after, but it still made me feel better to do it.

I just ordered another couple samples before I commit to purchasing the $140 bottle. I buy perfume and then don’t wear it, so I want to be sure. But I really like it even though it’s not sweet at all, and if my guy thinks it smells good, I will wear it on nights out. I think it’s work appropriate too. I also like how ONE spray from the sample vial is all you need. It lingers.
