Weekend Open Thread

Happy Memorial Day weekend, to all the American DWers! I can’t believe the unofficial kick-off to summer is already here, but it is and I’m totally embracing it. I even bought some new white jeans when they were on sale a couple weeks ago in honor of the day (these are some of the best jeans I’ve ever owned, by the way — super comfy, flattering, hold their shape). Anyhoo, we’re heading to Missouri bright and early tomorrow morning to spend a few days with my parents. The pool in their subdivision just opened for the season and Jackson’s been talking about it all week, even stopping people he barely knows on the street to tell them that we’re going to Missouri to see his grandma and grandpa and they have a pool! When I dropped him off at school this morning, I told his teacher he’d be out for a few days next week, and she said, “Oh, we know all about it. He’s going to Missouri to see his grandma and grandpa, and they have a pool!” They also have central air, plenty of wine and beer, and a deck with a perfect view of the sunset, so I think we’ll all have a good time.

Oh, by the way, remember last week when I mentioned that Joanie was teething and it was so much more dramatic than I ever remembered Jackson’s teething to be? She was up two or three nights in a row screaming her head off and even Motrin didn’t seem to provide much relief. Well, it turns out she had a nasty ear infection that resulted in a ruptured eardrum! This whole week has been so anxious for all of us as we waited and hoped she’d be well enough to fly tomorrow, but after several days of recuperating, some antibiotics, and assurances from two different doctors that she’s fine to travel, I think everything will be ok. Still, I’ll be happy when we’re on the other side of the commute and can relax for a few days at the grandparents’.

Hope you all have a lovely holiday weekend, whatever your plans are. See you on the flip side.

Long time lurker, first time commenter: The ‘teething/ear infection’ thing is EXACTLY what happened with my son last winter – I thought some of his teeth were coming in, and that’s why he was inconsolable and sucking on his fingers and barely sleeping. And then his ear started leaking stinking yellow goo and he felt much, much better (also, the antibiotics, hydrogen peroxide, and suctioning helped). Once the ear leaks, there’s necessarily a ‘rupture’ in the eardrum, but the pain from the pressure is supposed to go away and the eardrum closes up after the pus is all drained out (not at all gross. Except for totally gross). Also, if it helps you feel better about the plane, three days after he was on antibiotics and had his ears drained we took him on a 26 hour trans-atlantic flight (stop-over) and he was FINE. I had a raging sinus infection and was definitely not, but he was chill.

This does help me feel better — thanks! Joanie’s going through exactly what you’re describing and, yes, it’s very gross. And I feel bad she was in so much pain and I had no idea what was really going on. Although, to be fair, she really was cutting four teeth at the same time. A few days after the ruptured eardrum, the nasty drainage is just about finished and she’s back to her usual cheerful self, so here’s hoping the trip tomorrow is no big deal.

Speaking of ear infections and plane rides, my mother took my brother and I to visit family in North Carolina many years ago by herself. My brother had been subject to frequent ear infections and was scheduled to get tubes put in the week we were getting back. The doctor mentioned that we would probably end up cancelling the appointment since sometimes the change in pressure/altitude helps to clear some of those inner ear/eardrum issues up. Sure enough.. appointment cancelled.

Glad she’s feeling better! Have a fun trip!!

My BIL is driving 12 hours to see us and should be here in about an hour. I’m making fajita’s tonight and we are going white water rafting tomorrow! It’s only a half-day trip but it’s going to be awesome…and scary – I nearly fell out the last time we went – my butt was off the edge and the only thing that saved me was grabbing the back of my husbands life jacket and pulling myself back up…good thing I’d been working out so I didn’t have wimpy arms (ha, ha – I really do have wimpy arms so it must have been pure adrenaline and determination to NOT fall out!
    .
Have a great weekend everyone! 🙂

Hey guys. Guess what! I had a baby today! He’s perfect and beautiful and I couldn’t be more happy with how it all went down. I’m exhausted but he doesn’t want to be put down and since it was a traumatic day for him – being taken from his cozy home for the last 9 months – I am fine with indulging him. So my husband is napping (he tried to let me go first but I kept opening my eyes to look at him holding the baby which is just the most wonderful thing ever) and once baby feeds again, I’ll take my turn – or maybe we will send him to the nursery for a bit so we can both get some rest.

Anyway, wanted to share! Thanks for all the well wishes up til now!

Othello and I will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary on Monday. We haven’t made any super fun plans. Mostly we’ve decided we want to spend the day in bed together 😉

I’m really busy procrastinating instead of packing.
Moving is stressful, and it’s totally gorgeous outside, so naturally I’m taking a bubble bath in the middle of the day.

For anyone with waves or curls, in this hot weather when heat styling isn’t a good option, I highly recommend the “30 Days of Curly Hairstyles” eBook on the hairromance.com blog. She has like 250 free tutorials too, but I bought the eBook, let my hair air dry, and then followed one of her tutorials where you Dutch braid across the back of your head and then do a curly side ponytail. Gets your hair off your neck and looks cute enough for night. I suck at hair, and I can do her tutorials. She has a bunch where she does them on her hair straight too, if you don’t have curls. She’s not 15, either, so her styles are work appropriate.

I’ve recommended it before, but Sebastian Whipped Creme Mousse is great for air drying waves. I also used a sulfate-free shampoo and a leave-in oil.
