Weekend Open Thread

Happy weekend, everyone! I hope your week was better than mine, which totally sucked. In addition to some family and friends dealing with various crises, we have a small crisis of our own — our new home, in which we’re having some renovations done before we move in, won’t be ready for us to move into at the end of the month due to some unforeseen circumstances, and we found out our current apartment was just rented out for December 1 (despite our landlord telling us not to worry if we needed to stay an extra few weeks, that we’d work something out), so… I don’t know what we’re going to do. Maybe move our stuff over to the new place and sublet something else for a few weeks. Which isn’t ideal under any circumstances, but especially during the holidays and when you have small kids and cats. We also found out that our commercial tenants — we’re landlords now — are going out of business and terminating their lease, so we have to find new tenants in addition to everything else. Good times.

Anyway, I’m sure it will all work out, but this period before it does is nerve-wracking. I’m finding it hard to focus on much else. Yesterday, I even forgot to pack a lunch for Jackson to take to school (I made the lunch — I just forgot to pack it in his backpack) — and, oh, the horror, he had to get a school lunch (he hates school lunch, I think solely on principle).

How is this coming week already Thanksgiving? It is! Do you have plans? We’re probably going to take the kids to watch the Macy’s parade from Drew’s office again at Rockefeller Plaza. And then a quiet meal at home later in the day, just the four of us. And over the weekend, I hope to take advantage of some sales (at least online) on things we need for the new place, and maybe knock out most of my holiday shopping. As you’re doing your own holiday shopping, too, don’t forget that when you shop through my amazon affiliate link(through that widget in the sidebar or any link to Amazon, like this one) I get a small commission on your sales, which helps run this site. Thanks so much, and enjoy your weekend!

I’m off to Maui with the husband and his parents! We’re spending Thanksgiving watching the Maui invitational and hitting up beaches!

This last week has been brutal at work, 15 plus hour days. A vacation is much needed!

Good luck with your new place, Wendy. That sucks, and I hope it all works out.

So I saw an ad for this top while I was browsing online, and I clicked on it because it was so cute. It arrived yesterday and I LOVE it. It’s just as cute in person, cozy, looks great with leggings, and you should all get it. It does take a while to arrive from China, but worth the wait.

Comes in more colors, but I got the grey. I feel like it could work if you’re a little pregnant too, the way it’s designed.

A lady followed me to the bathroom to ask where I got it!

I have seen this top several times and liked it, but have been hesitant to buy because it’s from China. You never know if you’re going to get something a million sizes too small, or if it’ll be really shitty quality.

How was the sizing? Did you have to size up?

I got the small and it fit as expected. I seriously love it. My husband and my hairdresser and this random lady at a restaurant were all like, that’s awesome. And it’s just a sweatshirt!!!

I’m also not tall, and it wasn’t overly long on me.

Sorry to hear about the housing stress. What about a residential hotel, like a Residence Inn? That might be easier, depending on how long you need. Or an AirBnB?

Yeah, I think we’ll go the airbnb route. Not sure what we’re going to do with the cats though. It’s very stressful, but, of course, not the end of the world. We’ll get through.

Air BnBs don’t take cats? If not, do try rover.com, we’ve had good luck finding sitters for our asshole dog.

Wendy, I’m sure you can find a pet friendly place. My mom rents out a room in her house on Airbnb and she definitely welcomes pets! So I’m sure it’s possible.

Our sitter for the week we’re away in December fell through, and I hate to put it all on my parents… so my husband swung by the vet and looked at the fliers for pet-sitting on the bulletin board. He just brought the dog over to meet one of them, and apparently it went well. It’s in someone’s home, they never have more than 4 dogs at a time, they say your pet becomes a member of the family while staying there, etc… I bet your vet has referrals and/or ads as well.

We have a cat-sitter we love. I don’t know if she would house the cats herself or knows someone who would. I really hate to leave my cats in someone else’s home without us. Cats are different than dogs. They don’t deal with that kind of change in abode as well. And my older cat is 18 and pretty much over it. This is going to put a lot of stress on her, and I’m worried. The whole thing totally sucks. We got fucked every which way but a number of different people, and I just feel especially bad for our kids and our cats. I’m actually pretty depressed about it. Who wants to be homeless during the holidays? Our landlord can suck it for putting us through this. We’ve been great tenants to him, taken really good care of the apartment, and are leaving it in much better shape than when we moved in. And he repays us by kicking us out three weeks before christmas when he knows we have nowhere to go? He seriously can suck it.

      • Dear Wendy November 20, 2017, 3:17 pm

Also, there’s literally only 1 airbnb in our neighborhood available and it’s a private room in someone’s home.

      • Kate November 20, 2017, 3:51 pm

Oh, ok, that makes sense about cats and other people’s homes.

        Your landlord sucks!!!

It’s obviously not a great holiday environment for the holidays, but do you have any extended-stay-hotel options? As bad as this does suck, it must happen pretty frequently to families when they buy and sell homes and there’s any kind of a gap in between. Real estate is a nightmare.

  • Lianne November 18, 2017, 8:10 pm

Oh god, Wendy. I’m so sorry!! Knowing you and how you work, it’ll all be sorted out in a short time. But I understand the stress this adds in an already stressful time. No fun.

We close on the sale of our condo in a little over two weeks, but still haven’t found a new house to buy so we’re renting a townhouse that’s about half the size of our current home. We move into that two weeks from yesterday. I can’t wait to be on the other side of the move and closing so we can refocus on finding a house. All while pregnant and totally losing energy!

Ugh, that’s stressful, too, even if it wasn’t unplanned. Good luck on finding a house! I definitely feel you on wanting to be on the other side of the move. I can’t wait for this to be behind us!!

Ha, yeah especially when my husband will randomly say, let’s just buy something, anything! And I am just like, that’s not helpful….and it’s not happening!
