Weekend Open Thread

Happy Memorial Day weekend to those of you in the U.S.! Do you have any plans for the holiday weekend? Unfortunately, as I mentioned earlier, we have lots of rain in the forecast, but maybe we’ll get lucky and Monday will be dry, if not sunny. If so, I’m sure Jackson will be itching to get outside on his bike, which he just learned to ride without training wheels last weekend. We also plan to meet up with friends for picnics and dinners and such and so on. I’m so excited for summer I can hardly stand it. This year, we have it all figured out for making the most of summer in NYC: We bought a home with central air and a deck, and we’re skipping town for two weeks in August. If that’s not a recipe for a great summer in New York, then I don’t know what.

If you’re in a shopping mood, there are tons of sales this weekend. I’m going to check out these online sales:

Nordstrom: Save up to 40% at their half-yearly sale
Nordstrom Rack: Save an extra 25% off clearance
Anthropologie: Save an extra 40% off clearance
Bloomingdale’s: Save up to 50% off select regular priced and on almost all already-reduced items
Macy’s: Extra 20% off + free shipping with code MEMDAY
Ulta: Save 20% on any one qualifying item with code 650805

Have a great one!

I’m working the night shift Monday night, which means I’ll be spending Memorial Day napping during the day. I hope everyone with a normal work schedule has good weather and lots of outside time though!
If anyone is hitting up Ulta, the Smashbox Cover Shot Eyeshadow Palette in Petal Metal by Vlada is really nice, a little eyeshadow palettes of rose golds that I just got and am loving for summer. Looks great on blue eyes!

The packaging is kind of mesmerizing and the shadows are so luminous and pigmented! Not that I needed more eyeshadow, but it seemed like a relatively modest splurge…

Oo Oo I bought this too but it didn’t have the front picture. Eyeshadows are gorgeous

One always needs more eye shadow. I really need to cut it out though. My sister works for Too Faced plus my buys. It’s getting out of hand for someone who wears eyeshadow maybe one day a week.

Some of us remember our loved ones and others all year and not just on a day that the government has told us to, but you enjoy yourself too, thanks.

As a vet – and my whole family has served – I have to say this is rather condescending. My uncles who passed in combat are no less loved because I’ll be opening a beer and grilling steak. It’s be a favorite way to be remembered for most service members I know.

And I’m sure you practice similar appropriate activities on all other holidays, right? Mlk, the 4th, Labor Day, Columbus, Thanksgiving and Christmas? Oh, and President’s day? And if you’re fortunate enough to work at a job that gives you some or all of those days off, please tell me you don’t step into a store or gas station or restaurant or any establishment where people work, unless of course, it’s optional\volunteer?

So you’ll be remembering loved ones, and not loved ones? Who are others? Like, The Others? Or others you didn’t actually know? How can you remember them if you didn’t know them? If others aren’t forgetting them, why do you need to remember them?
I’m pretty sure they’d want you to enjoy your life, and not be an asshole shaming others for taking advantage of the long weekend and sweet sales. Otherwise, why would everyone have Monday off? (Other than the service industry, and emergency personnel.)

I know it’s not news, but I want to give a shout out to Oribe Dry Texture Spray. I had not bought it because it’s so expensive and Dry Bar Triple Sec is good, but wow! I bought a purse size one and it is awesome. It replaces dry shampoo because it keeps your roots from getting oily. It keeps my hair from getting limp and starting to feel dirty after a couple days. And it smells soooo good, so your hair seems fresh. You can keep putting more on, and it really beefs up your hair’s volume if you use it in the roots, like in a way that doesn’t fall flat, also gives grip to braids. It’s truly a 5-star product.

I got my niece this a few months back. I’m doing this thing for her 13th year and she gets one small present a month. I’ll have to check in and see if she likes it.

I got this in my Fab Fit Fun box. Love it. Also just overall obsessed with that box. It is the most fun and once you are a member you can buy add on items for so cheap. My Murad face wash is $11 instead of $26!

Omg, I was just walking my (small) dog and there was a bit of a commotion under a bush. All of a sudden a huge turkey (like waist high) came running out and attacked us. It must have babies under there. It was trying to hit the dog with its wings and peck him, and kept running at us while I screamed, “NOOO!!!” and kicked at it. Then I threw a bag of poop at its head and it stopped. Whew. Got to calm down. Only one person saw, I think. I should probably go back and get the poop.

I went birding earlier this month and saw nine wild turkey, some from a few feet away. They are enormous! I felt a little nervous being so close. That experience sounds terrifying (but also kind of hilarious, as long as your dog wasn’t injured or traumatized).

He was scared. He didn’t want to stick around and f with that turkey. But he’s fine, still has both his eyes. Definitely will avoid that shrub now that I know it’s a turkey nursery!

I started to run, but it chased us and could run faster as well as fly a little. I thought it might be like a dog, which will chase you if you run. So I threw the poop. I didn’t realize until afterward that she probably had babies and just wanted me out of there. Turkeys are really aggressive on a regular day. They peck people’s cars and dent them!

We only have bush turkeys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_brushturkey

They’re like kindy compared to your monsters. Although my cat tried to take one on once when she was a teeny kitten, her ego was writing checks her body couldn’t cash that day.

I’d never heard of it either until then. Apparently there are a lot of turkeys on Northern CA. Odd I lived there and never once saw one.

They walk right out in the road. They don’t care. They think everyone will stop for them. But their slow, stupid thing is an act – they can hustle their ass when they’re hormonal.

I grew up in a rural area and there were tons of wild turkeys. I chased after babies once as a kid and narrowly escaped a group of mature turkeys divebombing me. It was terrifying.

It’s not as cute as being chased by a half-flying turkey. A protective mama turkey up against a protective dog owner sounds kind of funnier than a wild goose chase.

I hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend. I’m not one to complain about the sun/heat, but damn. I’m a little miffed we didn’t get a spring. I like more than a few days of windows open!

Low 70s and sun is perfect.

It’s so cold most of the year in a Chicago so I try not to complain when it’s hot. Hot came too fast and furious this year.

It’s 84 here in Toronto. Spring is my favourite season and it seemed to skip us, too, but if you so much as open your mouth to complain about the heat in Canada, people will jump down your throat. You’re supposed to be grateful for any weather that’s not winter. I do really enjoy hot, hot heat, but only when it’s dry, not the humid heat we always seem to get here.

Woo hoooo!! Seconding the YAY for friends-made-through-DW.

I can indeed confirm that K was at my house for a BBQ on Saturday. Lots of food, beer, and cornhole for all.

Sunday, another BBQ and Monday, cleaning up my mother-in-law’s yard from the big storm that swept through our area two weeks ago. Her house had five or six downed trees, each 50+ feet tall. We’re still not done!
