Weekend Open Thread

Happy weekend! What are you all up to? We’re celebrating Jackson’s 7th birthday with some friends, researching ovens since ours literally exploded yesterday (like, glass shards everywhere, we’re lucky the house didn’t burn down kind of exploding), and hopefully recuperating a little after what has been a very eventful few weeks (back-to-school transitions! Shingles! A death in the family! A flood in the basement! A visit from my sister! Jackson’s birthday! Exploding appliances! Oh my!). I’m hoping to finally watch the documentary, “Three Identical Strangers” and creator of “Mad Man”, Matthew Weiner’s new show, “The Romanoffs.” And I guess I’ll be doing all my cooking on the stovetop and in the Instapot for a few days, so if you have some favorite recipes, I’m all ears!

Holy cow about the oven exploding. Lucky no one was standing in front of it (I’m assuming) to end up cut up with hot glass! I wonder how that even happens. New fear in life established.

We weren’t home when it happened and no one was hurt, fortunately. We had set the oven to self clean earlier in the day and… well, something went horribly wrong. Just one more thing in a long list of mysteries and weird events since we bought our place almost a year ago. I knew home ownership would include unexpected expenses and some headaches, but I never would have anticipated how many we’ve faced in the past year. Here’s hoping the second year of home ownership will be a little less, um, exciting.

I’ve read that using the self clean is really bad for the oven due to the insane high temps it reaches. I still do it but plan my whole darn day around it (not too hot out, going to be home to monitor it). I know mine has two settings. One is a quick or cooler self clean but it doesn’t get it nearly as clean, then there is the big daddy that takes forever. I never knew that could happen though. Glad no one was there at least. Crazyness. Good wishes for a less dramatic home year of home ownership to come. The only upside being a new stove which can be fun although an unplanned expense.

We tried to do the self-clean with our oven in our last place, to make everything perfect for open-houses. But shortly into it, the dog got really upset and started crying so we aborted the mission. It just seems too intense. I would never leave the house with the oven on either – is that recommended?

I tried that thing where you rub down the metal surfaces inside the oven with a cut lemon, then steam a bowl of water and 4 lemon halves at 250 for an hour, let cool somewhat, and wipe the surfaces with a microfiber cloth. It actually works – on the surfaces you can reach. It worked somewhat on the drips on the glass door, and excellently on the metal interior.

Oh no, definitely not recommended to leave the oven on when you leave your place! It was a miscommunication between me and drew, and confusion about how the damn self-cleaning feature works (or didn’t work…) that that happened and we would never intentionally do something like that! We were lucky the mess and expense wasn’t much much worse.

That’s super frightening. Home ownership is pretty fucked sometimes.

We’ve done that once or twice over the years because my husband cranks the oven to make pizza. Luckily, we’ve only had to replace the glass on the front. It’s a small price to pay for his amazing pizza.

It’s cold here. Finally! I’m all about autumn weather after all the rain and extreme heat and humidity.

Three Identical Strangers was incredible. I couldn’t stop thinking of it for days. The whole premise was crazy, but what unfolds will blow your mind.

I hope you guys all have fun this weekend! We’re going to seven year old’s birthday party and we have tickets for a child-themed show this weekend. Good luck picking out a new oven. I like our double oven. It’s G.E. otherwise pretty unremarkable. We’ve never had anything explode.

We woke up before the crowds and went to Aldi, the commissary, grocery, breakfast. Ready to throw something in the crock pot and relax. We are in fall weather full force here. Thought it was snowing yesterday but it was slush rain. Our temps are between 34-56. I love it. Also got some pumpkins at the commissary. Wanted to do the pumpkin patch thing but there were $2.50/each so i wasn’t about to pass that up. Rest of the weekend will be relaxing. Woohoo.

Is anyone watching The Haunting of Hill House show on Netflix? It’s so spooky! The second episode was almost too creepy for me, but I liked the third one a lot. It’s these 5 siblings who lived in a haunted ass house in the 80s and are now pretty messed up, but we don’t completely know why yet.

I did read the book years ago but I can’t remember what happens. I also read Hell House which is quite creepy too.

Oops, I was really on episode three. She’s a badass. That episode was good! A little less terrifying but good thrills.

Here’s a good easy crockpot or instapot recipe: chicken breasts with jars of Trader Joe’s salsa verde. Cook till soft and falling apart and eat in tortillas or on rice! Yum.

Yum! Would any salsa Verde do? The nearest TJs isn’t super convenient to get to in a pinch.

I’ve used other brands of salsa too. Can even do red salsa if you prefer. Key is to buy good stuff since its the majority of the flavor for your meal. (I have always regretted buying the 69 cent Herdez salsa, is what I’m saying).
