Weekend Open Thread

Happy weekend, everyone! What are you all up to? My weekends usually start on Fridays, one of the two days both my kids are in school (until 2:30, which means this is the first time in seven years I don’t have a child home in the early afternoon!), and I’ve been trying to take advantage of that time by enjoying the city more than I’ve been able to since becoming a mom. I squeeze in as much work as I can during Joanie’s naps in the first half of the week and on Thursdays when she’s in school all day so that on Fridays I can go do stuff I’m not able to enjoy as well with kids in tow. Yesterday I went to the Andy Warhol exhibit at the Whitney, which I highly recommend. And then last night, I started watching an Andy Warhol documentary, but it’s four hours long and I fell asleep before it was even half over. Maybe I’ll try again tonight.

Drew is at a friend’s kid’s bar mitzvah in New Jersey this morning and I am internetting and cleaning house at the moment while the kids watch a movie. Then I hope to convince them to accompany me on a couple errands plus a stop at the playground. Tomorrow is family day at the Guggenheim for Jackson’s school, which means we get in free and there are a few workshops for the kids (plus there’s an exhibit there I want to see). But I anticipate much arguing over going, which I probably won’t have the patience to deal with, and so I will likely see the exhibit on one of my aforementioned kid-free Fridays. (And I can even get a free ticket from Jackson’s school for people who couldn’t make it to the museum for Family Day, so how cool is that?)

Hey, by the way, since Thanksgiving is next week already (!) and many of you are, or soon will be, starting your holiday gift shopping, I wanted to remind you that any time you make a purchase through my amazon affiliate link (see the widget in the side bar), I get a small commission. Those small commissions really add up, especially this time of year, and help keep this site running. So thank you in advance for your continued support, and have a great weekend!

Snowing here, second snow of the season. Not like it was on the East coast, just an inch or so but nice to have that on a Saturday morning. Will make for a lazy day. Husband went with son to get a snow shovel as ours has vanished.

Last night was a bit exhausting with stepson throwing a fit and behaving pretty awfully so I am mentally drained and excited to relax today and stay warm. Thinking of something to put in the crock pot. I am searching through all my pins to think of what to ask husband to bring home from the store so I get can something in the crock pot. I can’t wait to get an Instapot but have held off on buying one because my grandma really wants to get us that for xmas. She insists on an actual gift so sometimes it is difficult to come up with something I want, so once I knew I wanted that and she would enjoy giving it I held off on buying one. She loves giving me cooking/baking items.

Got all my stuff for Thanksgiving as there is no way I was going to the store with the rush plus they run out of stuff in my experience. We did that yesterday. Neighbor brought me pumpkins as a treat to make my pie with so it’ll be truly home made this year. I don’t eat pumpkin pie so I tend to just used canned since it’s easier. Ok kind of selfish to do it lazy style just because I don’t like it but I always make other desserts as well, usually something chocolate for the kids.

Thinking we will grab brunch tomorrow. Husband wanted to today but I woke up with a headache and didn’t want to drive in the bad weather on top of that.

I blow dried my hair with a free Sephora sample of some Briogeo blow dry cream, but I didn’t like how it came out, so I did this style and it saved the day:

Also. I tried Sunday Riley skin care because a guy who would know told me it’s one of the only prestige lines worth buying, no water, real strong-ass ingredients (I strongly believe most drugstore cosmetics are the same as most high-end). I was already using good products from CVS, so I wouldn’t say it dramatically boosted my radiance, but I do think it’s burning off any sun-damage-related pigmentation and doing a nice plumping effect. It’s full of like lactic acid and enzymes and uh idk concentrated retinol and C. I got a gift set at Sephora. Definitely worth a try.

Also, Wendy, I put that Brazilian Bum Bum Cream you sent me on my dry hands at work, and my co-workers were all wtf is that?! This one woman ordered it for her mom.

    PS I’m not a robot.

I love the smell of that Bum Bum cream. I’d love to have a thicker one for winter.

And I have been wanting to try the Sunday Riley line! I was hoping I’d get some free samples from Sephora on Friday when I bought some new makeup, but I didn’t and I was running late and didn’t have time to ask.

The guy who told me about it says Sephora will give you free samples. Ask for the blue oil and the Good Genes.

Or, wow, you could buy this for $20! https://m.sephora.com/product/play-smarts-skincare-by-age-40s-P436520?icid2=products%20grid:p436520:product

The set I bought with full size Good Genes and 4 other smaller products looks sold out, but that set above looks cool.

For sure buying this. I’ve tried it before but don’t currently have it. The cold is already drying my hands to painful levels.

Don’t forget about Vaseline and Aquaphor too, to repair and protect really dry skin.

In the last eight years, I have been without a child hanging on me for maybe a total of ten hours.
    I have three, 8, 6, 3.5

    I’m not a robot, technically.

I haven’t used the blow dry cream from Briogio but love love their deep conditioning mask. I got a full sized one in my Fabfitfun box (guys I just love that box with such a passion, I stalk it on Fedex once it ships and rush home to open it). Currently hooked on Living Proof though, also started with a free sample that I got with my points from Sephora.

I just found out I’m pregnant!! I’m only 5 weeks along, so I can’t tell anyone in real life, but it’s such a big secret that I just can’t keep it to myself. It’s my first ever pregnancy (I’m 32), and I’m shocked. We’ve only been trying for 3 months, and I’m a pragmatic person, so I’ve been expecting it to take at least a year and have been mentally preparing myself in case of infertility. My husband is away visiting friends (I told him before he left), so I’ve been spending the weekend alone, reading “What to Expect when You’re Expecting” and alternating between excitement and terror. !

Thank you! I’m trying not to get too excited, given how early it still is, but it’s pretty hard not to!

My husband is still recouping from back surgery. We ended up staying in and missing a get-together. My brother brought us some home-made cream of mushroom soup and is was soooo good. Today one of my kids has a party at a craft place and then we will be joining friends for supper, so I’m going to go grocery shopping soon. The cold weather just makes me want to curl up and hibernate.

We also got our tree out early, so I’m hoping to clean this week and start decorating a little early so I’m done by thanksgiving. I’m making cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, roasted Brussels sprouts, and a yet to be determined dessert. If time allows I’m thinking of making treacle pudding because my kid’s would get a kick out of it.

I’m also going to try to make a bunch of cards for an oversea’s fundraiser my sister is heading up. She’s traveling there, herself, and will directly be delivering children books, cards, and maybe a few devices to the rural schools in the area.

Every Sunday now I hang out at the nursing home. I’m kind of into it. Sometimes I just lie on my aunt’s bed and zone out a bit. It’s a very nice facility. Last week we brought her some cute Nikes for going up and down the hall with the walker. She’s tuned into everyone’s sneakers and didn’t want big white mall-walking ones. They’re having turkey dinner with 3 kinds of pie on Tuesday. I might sneak out of work and go to it.
