Weekend Open Thread

There’s a blizzard heading our way —  supposedly — so I’m busy making a batch of chili and some chocolate chip cookies (as you do). Please talk amongst yourselves. Topic? Hmm… How about: “If you could say one thing to one person — dead or alive, famous or not, friend or foe — without negative repercussion, who would it be and what would you say?”

Well, I might ask Nina Simone to sing me a song.

The snow is for real, it’s been snowing all day. They are calling for 30cm for NYC or something, with the city closed already? Snow is the easiest of the storms to cope with as long as the electricity doesn’t quit.

    Good luck

      What are centimeters? 😉

I kid. I kid. NYC is super gross right now. It’s windy and you get hit in the face with sleet every half block or so. Deep icy slush puddles wait to trap you on every block. Highly unpleasant. But last I heard the city is only going to get a foot max and it will be mostly gone by tomorrow. Now the areas surrounding NYC (like Long Island) where basically my entire family lives? They’re getting hit bad. They usually do.

That’s my NYC weather report of the hour. Now off to drink the wine I stocked up on!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=-ctyNTY8dNU I wanted to share this video with all of you since I know we’re all cat and animal lovers here. This video was made by the staff of the animal shelter that I volunteer at! It’s so cute <3

I wish I could adopt all the cats! It’s so funny how they all have different personalities. I love the lap cats.

I know! There were the I Am Busy Eating Right Now cats, and there were the What Are You Doing cats– they sure are unique.
Also, for anyone else who was unfamiliar with ferrets as pets– my first impression of the video left me wondering if the ferrets were handled right (people seemed to be dangling the ferrets), while thinking that, of course, in the DW community, things are usually being done right… I searched a while for information on handling ferrets, and the ferrets in this video are OK, as one would expect from a shelter, so good.

I wish it would snow! We had one day where we had some flurries but it didn’t stick. It’s been such a warm winter here that I’ve forgotten that it even is winter. Everyday has been around 8C (46F) all winter long. I’ve used my winter coat a dozen times, which is good because it wasn’t really fitting a couple weeks ago. I shouldn’t complain though, it’s nice to get out for a walk here and there.

I left the house for 3 whole hours yesterday, guys! I’m so happy about that. I didn’t have to feed or change him so those are still making me a bit nervous about doing those in public but I’ll have to at some point. Also I cleaned my bathroom today for the first time in about two months. It felt good! My husband doesn’t do quite the same job as I do but I wouldn’t complain to him since he’s been doing all the cooking and cleaning (and soothing a crying baby all night while I sleep) I was feeling guilty about all my husbands been doing but then I added it up and I have been feeding the baby for 10 out of 24 hours not to mention other caring for the baby so I shouldn’t feel bad about him losing some sleep.

We have already gotten 30 cm and it’s still coming down. The puppies love it even though they have to leap through it.

I don’t feel like I have anything unsaid in my life but my father-in-law passed away long before I got together with my husband but he always wanted my husband to date me. We had pictures of his parents and sister at the wedding beside us at the ‘alter’ so they could be included in the day…but I guess I would want to know if he was looking down on us that day and was happy.

If I could talk to anyone, I would talk to both of my grandmas. My mom’s mom passed away before I was born. I wish I could have met her. She also has a lot of great homemade recipes that I love to make. It’s almost as if I have gotten to know her through those recipes but I wish I could just talk to her. My dad’s mom passed away in 2004, but she had a stroke when I was 3 years old so I never got to know her the way my dad knew her. I would love to have the opportunity to just spend time with her and talk to her. Many of my dad’s sisters have her same calm demeanor, but it would have been so great to get to know her.

(i had other people running through my mind…bin laden…the ex LAPD officer who is currently on a killing spree…but those were kind of a downer and i would like to have a happy weekend)

DW people! What are you doing this weekend? What’s new in your life? Having trouble with a family member? Friend? Significant other? Lets talk about it!

It’s snowing here – barely. I’m kind of jealous of the northeast and all their awesome snow. Apparently the mountains are getting a shit ton right now though… so snowboarding for me tomorrow! Hopefully.

      Hey Sampson!!
Whats is going on? Nothing new here just bored at work. One good thing that happened is my landlord is tearing out the carpet in my room. She asked me if I had any issues and I told her my bedroom smelled like pee cause of the previous roommate and BAMN she’s like okay lets get ride of that carpet to make you happy. How awesome is that?! So I moved into the spare bedroom yesterday, the carpet was removed today, and this really nice ceramic tile that looks like wood flooring is going in later this week. Anyhoo.. I am really happy about that. When I texted her ‘thank you!’ she was saying anything to make the girls happy! She owns the house and I live with her daughter who is pretty cool. Considering my last roommate threatened to kill my dog. hah.

I would tell my friend Mike, who took his own life seven and a half years ago, that I love him. I was in love with him, and I never got the chance to tell him before he passed away. We stopped talking because of some poor decisions that I made, and as I was making my way back around my friends, apologizing and such, I never got back to him. Oddly enough, I had a dream almost six months ago with him in it, and I finally got to tell him how I felt. He smiled, laughed a little and then whispered that he loved me too. I know it’s not something that I’ll get over, but one of those things that you just learn to deal with. My dream gave me more closure than anything else has in the last seven years.

I would also ask Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong to sing “Summertime” for me. I have yet to hear a decent rendition, everyone who tries to cover it seems to just butcher it. I don’t even like Jennifer Hudson’s version, either!

Oh hon, I’m so sorry for your loss. I know what it’s like to have so many things left unsaid when you lose someone that way. Stay strong, okay?

Y’all, there’s been a really beat up stray cat laying in the stairwell of my apartment building all day. I just thought he was sleeping in there to get out of the rain earlier, so I wasn’t worried, but he didn’t move from like 11am (maybe earlier, that’s when we first noticed him) until 7pm. When we realized he was probably sick we called animal control, but they can’t take him to a shelter until tomorrow morning. We took him some food and water, and that gave him the strength to get up the stairs to meow at our door. Our cat (a stray we took in five weeks ago) hears him meowing, and she’s trying to look at him under the door. I just feel so so bad. I can’t take in another animal, but his cries are so sad and awful. I really hope he makes it through the night until someone can take him.

My maternal grandfather died 10 years ago- he came to the US from Italy a year before my mom was born… He smuggled plants from Italy into New York in shoes boxes and was an amazing gardener.
I was 21 when he died and never really had an interest in gardening…a few years ago I got really into it, and I’m sad that I never got to learn from him.
So, if I could, I’d sit down with Poppy and a cup of coffee and talk plants.
