Weekend Open Thread

Happy weekend! What are you all up to? We’re taking the kids to the a Kids Film Festival today and maybe a kids’ variety show tomorrow, and tonight Drew and I have a double date with old friends. In between, I’ll be reading book #5 in my #25InAYear challenge. (I’m about halfway done and it’s due back to the library on Tuesday and I can’t renew it, so I have to make time to finish. Fortunately, it’s very entertaining.) Hope you all have a great weekend!

Oh, and a quick housekeeping note: You may have noticed additional ads in the forums starting yesterday – both on the desktop site and the mobile version. I tried this last summer and removed them after some complaints about their intrusiveness, but after a pretty abysmal year in site revenue — 2018 was the first time in eight years that my revenue didn’t grow and in fact dropped 20% — I need to try different ways of boosting revenue (without resorting to paid subscription, sponsored posts, and donation drives, all of which I find problematic in varying degrees). Thanks for understanding, and if you have some interest in the business of running a blog/digital indie publication and why you have or may see some of your favorite sites closing shop, this is a really informative and insightful read, as is this one. (One more note: I don’t plan to close shop any time soon! One advantage to never having made much money from this site and not employing a staff is that a drop in revenue isn’t as devastating for me as it is for some web publishers.)

Finally getting husband to the airport today to bring our stuff home, well it’ll be here on Valentine’s Day, but he is loading it. Jealous he gets to go back to OC and eat yummy food. I could really use some Del Taco! Although I did find a recipe hack that replicates the sauce very well.

So I’ll be lazy, getting some cleaning done before we move more furniture in. Seemed like a good time to do baseboards before they are blocked further. I hate cleaning base boards btw.

The weather is much nicer. 35 right now feels like spring! We are getting rain though this weekend so that’ll be fun with all the snow on the ground, slushy mess I sure.

I’m going to relax, maybe watch some bad tv I avoid as to not torture husband, some face masks.

Crazy rain here in LA means production just postponed my shoot for sunday! Yay! I need another day off and shooting exteriors in the rain ALL DAY would be impossible… whew.

The food is so bad here that I miss Del Taco. It isn’t even kind of bad. The only redeeming quality is the pizza here is beyond amazing. Del Taco was my late night drunk food.

Del Taco is my ghetto Tuesday late lunch as they have that INSANE taco deal.

Mmmmm now again making me want Del Taco since I am being lazy and not cooking since no one is home.

I am on an odd Lifetime Movie kick brought on by trying to find your movies. Currently watching Psycho Mother in Law. I think it’s my female brain trying to counteract all the Science Channel…although, let’s be real I make husband watch every possible crime drama on A&E.

BFE Illinois, Quad cities. So as opposite from OC as one could possibly get.

I just Marie Kondo’d my socks, jeans, sweaters, and tank tops. I didn’t read the book or watch the show, just a couple YouTube clips. The thing about it is, it looks cool and all, but it also opens up a lot more space so you could buy more things. It’s kind of entertaining, and my husband started doing it too, but we have no clutter anyway and regularly donate clothes, so it’s more just a novelty distraction than a lifestyle change.

I’m doing my taxes this afternoon too, after a nursing home visit. I got my auntie a nice long sleeve striped tee at Target to go with her LL Bean athleisure separates.

Home improvement! Mom and I fixed a broken light switch without killing our selves or burning down the house. Then I recaulked the kitchen counter with a nearly invisible seam and today I made another Home Depot run for pest prevention supplies. Mom’s got mice but she’s a total badass with a “none shall survive” approach whereas my approach is “run out of the room”.
