Weekend Open Thread

Happy weekend! We woke up to snow this morning in Brooklyn – nearly the most we’ve had so far this fairly dry winter. Jackson has a basketball game this morning and then I think we’ll take the kids sledding in the park. After 7+ years of parenthood, I finally bought some snow pants in December to keep dry on these park sledding days, and it looks like I’ll get to break them in today. Also on the docket this weekend: my friend’s daughter’s birthday party, maybe checking out teknopolis at BAM, the Michael Jackson documentary streaming beginning tomorrow night, and I need to get to the library and check out a new book. February was a bit of a bust in terms of reading, though I am still ahead of pace to meet my goal of 25 books this year. I started reading this highly-acclaimed book a few weeks ago, and the combination of being distracted by my friend Jared’s fight for his life following his car accident and simply not being super into the book meant that it was the first one of the year that I decided not to finish. I think I need something short and light for my next read, or a book that’s about a topic I am particularly interest in (maybe this one?).

Thanks, again, for all your kind words of sympathy following Jared’s death last week. It’s been 11 days now and the shock has lifted, the news has settled in, and in the past couple days I’ve been able to think about things other than this immense loss. His family hasn’t announced a date for a memorial yet, but at some point I hope to gather with others who loved him and to honor his impact in our lives. In the meantime, I am trying to incorporate lessons in my daily life that his friendship, and his loss, have taught me. Today I will make snow angels.
