Weekend Open Thread

Happy weekend! What are you up to? I have no plans this weekend and after a month of nonstop activity – my friend’s memorial in St. Louis, Father’s Day, my friends’ wedding in Chicago, end-of-the-school-year activities and getting the kids transitioned into summer, throwing a 4th of July party and hosting out-of-town guests, and throwing joanie a 4th birthday party — I’ve got nothing planned this weekend and I am psyched about it! I’m going to finally finish this book and then start this one, which I’ve heard is really good, and is finally off my hold list at the library.

If you haven’t been following the news, Trump and his administration is still god-awful and they’re still separating families at the borders and locking them up, kids included, in cages. Tonight, in cities across the country, is a nation-wide rally/protest/vigil that I urge you to take part in if you can. Again and again and again, we have had reason to be taking the streets. I’ve protested so many times in the past 2-1/2 years, I’ve lost count. Tonight, I think Drew is going to go in my place while I stay home with the kids (he hasn’t been to a big protest yet; I’m usually the designated marcher in the family when these things are too late or too crowded to bring the kids and one of us has to stay home with them). Anyway, here’s info about it, and here’s info specific to the NYC rally.

Waiting to see what Barry does. Praying for the beautiful towns of New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Also praying for friends and family in the coastal areas of Louisiana.

I read “Educated” a few months ago and I agree, it is so good. It’s somewhat eye opening on how bad some homeschooling can be. Homeschooling is like anything else, it’s a continuum from parents who take pride in making sure their child is ahead in every subject to those who teach nothing.

I am all alone out in the Mojave near Joshua Tree this week working on designing / furnishing the mid century interior of a friend’s desert house which he will air bnd. It’s hot — mind-blowingly hot. Think 109. Whew…
    .
But the nights are magical. It cools down to 84 or so and then the cooling winds kick up. It’s fucking amazing out on the back patio under the party lights I strung up a few weeks ago.
    .
I finally started a new half hour pilot script. (One I’ve been scheming about for a year or so. ). And have banged out nine pages in the past two nights. This morning I was at it til past four a.m. Just me. My ipad. The coyotes in the distance. And some chilled glass bottles of Topo Chico — think Mexican La Croix.
    .
    Happy summer, everyone.

Mark, that sounds amazing! Also, I know how exciting a new script is – I’m a (I guess former) screenwriter as well; got my Master’s in screenwriting in 2006 and have written several pilots myself. I would love to hear more about it! I’m so jealous that you get to live and work in LA.

Thanks, TheLadyE! LA can be a real mixed bag for me lately. But I actually AM excited about this new script. It’s got a wacky concept that I don’t wanna say too much about just as it’s kinda high concept. (Rare for me). But I am 14 pages into it and having a blast.

What kind of stuff do you write? Feel free to add me on Facebook — where we can better swap stories and scripts.

3:30 am. Another breezy desert night. Finished 12 pages. So we’re averaging four a night. Which is not bad. Not bad at all.

That’s great – Mark! Sounds like the desert suits you. You might have to do a writing retreat at the airbnb when it’s ready.
