Happy Friday! This was a big week in our household. We returned on Tuesday from one last hurrah of summer upstate (you can see some pics on my instagram if you want) and on Thursday both kids started school (Jackson’s in third grade this year and Joanie has joined his school for pre-k). They are really excited to be in school together and it’s been very sweet to see how concerned Jackson is that Joanie have a smooth transition and feel settled and happy in her new class. After their first day yesterday, I took Joanie to the big fountain near our house and she made some wishes on pennies, including that everyone in her preschool class, who have now scattered to different schools for pre-k, remember her and have great years. She also made a wish that she could have her own car — “that I can drive myself in all the races” — and that she could bring her lovey to school with her every day. If that doesn’t sum up being four years old, then I don’t know.
This weekend I turn 43 and Drew’s taking me out Saturday night to celebrate. We’re going to a favorite restaurant in the neighborhood and probably out for drinks, after which I am starting a “Sober September” for the remainder of the month (or until I cave which, let’s face it, will probably be as soon as the temp drops below 65 and I think mulled wine sounds like a great idea). I’m looking forward to starting a new trip around the sun as this past trip was a little turbulent and I’m hopeful this next one will be smoother.
Hope you all have a great weekend, and enjoy whatever waning summer vibes you can (or, if you want to get a head start on the fall vibes, may I suggest mulled wine and a good book?)!

Happy Birthday!
Does anyone know how to incorporate as self-employed so you can be tax-compliant as a contractor? I have a sweet new gig that wants to work that way.

You mean like forming “Kate, Inc.” or “Kate, LLC” and being paid as a contractor via 1099?

Also, Happy Birthday, Wendy! Good luck with your Sober September.

Yeah. So I work for a startup, but both of us also do contract work. So far I’ve either gone through the company’s own temp agency or just sent them invoices, but this one needs me to be incorporated. So I think an LLC, right? I’m in MA if that matters.

Yes. An LLC is generally better than a corporation for what you’re looking to do. (In general, there are less formalities you have to follow.) You’ll have to get a tax ID number for it and all that, but just do the process like you would for an actual separate business you wanted to set up. The Secretary of State’s website should have a clear process to walk through.

Ok, thanks! I hope the name “Kate, LLC” is available!

Good luck!
