Since I am currently visiting my parents in my college town, where they moved a few weeks ago, I’ll share an old-school college favorite of mine – “Turn the Lights Down Low” featuring Lauryn Hill. I’d drive down the country roads with my windows down playing this song over and over and over (on cassette, which meant I had to stop and rewind over and over and over). These days, I kill it singing this at karaoke. All that practice back in the 90s helped.

Where is everyone?!
If anyone wants to hear about my weekend, I’ll tell ya. Yesterday I had my last day of clinicals at 7am, and even though I got a semi-decent amount of sleep the night before, early mornings exhaust me. I am so NOT a morning person that just getting up early (5am) will leave me tired for the rest of the day. My patient was a delight, though. And so was her roommate! They were seriously just the cutest, nicest old ladies, both recovering from hip surgery. It was funny, though, because my classmate who was taking care of my patient’s roommate is a guy, so his patient was all embarrassed around him. At one point she went into the bathroom and had some trouble in there – she opened the door and asked for help – I turned around and she was butt-ass naked, had just had diarrhea (in the toilet, thank jeebus), and needed help wiping herself and getting dressed. Of course she wouldn’t ask “the fella.” She told me, “Front to back, honey, front to back.” So cute. When my instructor came, she told her to give us both an A++ and asked if she could take us home with her. My patient was a cat lady who used to be a dance instructor, so we had a lot in common.
BUT ANYWAY after that I had to run a few errands and go to the doctor so I got home and fell asleep SO EARLY and slept all night. Today I was hoping to go to the library to work on a group project but THEY’RE CLOSED. What kind of BS is that?! So I have to figure out a way to do a Power Point presentation even though I don’t have Power Point on my laptop? Hmmm. And I also need to clean, big time.
Tonight is an 80s Geek themed belly dance show! I’m dressing up in my awesome, award-winning 80s costume and I am bringing a guy friend to set up with my girl friend… Not as potential dating partners but as fuck buddies. I’m really not sure if they’ll be into each other, but they have enough in common (sexually) that it’s worth a shot. Is that weird? She likes to be tied up, he wants to tie someone up. He is uncircumcised, and she loves uncut dongs. They’re both into paleo and crossfit. They’re both cute, young, and horny. That’s enough, right? Oh, well. Also I’m running out of money and have no idea when I’ll get more, so I’m hoping I can get people to buy me drinks? Haha.
Laura August 3, 2013, 2:59 pm
I HATED when the library was closed on the weekends during the summer; drove me nuts. You can use Google Docs to set up your presentation and save it as a pptx file if you need to tweak it in Powerpoint. But usually the Google Docs presentation works just fine. Good luck!

My weekend is going to consist of going to work today. Then tomorrow I’m hoping to finish my maple desk that I started building earlier in the week. I’m still very undecided about what stain I want to use on it and I’m probably going to finish it with a gloss varathane. Monday I’m either hoping to go for a hike with some friends or a date with this lovely lady I’ve been talking to lately.
lemongrass August 3, 2013, 11:24 am
I’m going to visit my parents for a couple days and then off to my inlaws. I’m excited, especially since E loves car rides and it’s a 12 hours roundtrip. He really loves going to different places and seeing people so this will be good. He gets bored at home and is actually a really portable baby, I’ve never had to stay home for him.
katie August 3, 2013, 11:32 am
today i am finally going to the animal shelter after not being able to volunteer for like a month in a row!!
i feel so bad that im going to give them money. guilt money.
katie August 3, 2013, 7:57 pm
Ugh guys I hurt a kitten today. Fuck. I told cats and Rachel and they said it wasn’t too bad so I’ll tell you all too.
So this kitten is getting adopted, so I put a collar on her. Two fingers of wiggle room. I leave the kitten room for a few minutes, chat a little with the adopter, then all the paperwork is ready so I go back to get her and put her in her box. She has somehow managed to get the collar in her mouth, and she is thrashing all crazy trying to get it off. I got it off and then find blood, and she cut up her gums trying to bite the collar or whatever she was trying to do. Ugh.
theattack August 3, 2013, 10:12 pm
I don’t think that’s all that bad, katie. Kittens get into everything. They’re insane. You didn’t hurt the kitten. The kitten hurt itself.
Lindsay August 4, 2013, 1:28 pm
That’s not bad at all. It’s not your fault. Kittens do stiff like that.
Lindsay August 4, 2013, 1:29 pm
Stuff. Stupid phone.
Boosker August 3, 2013, 11:08 am
Ha, sounds like an interesting weekend. Ah, college. I might be able to help you with the PowerPoint predicament. Open Office can be downloaded for free:
Another option would be to do a Prezi: prezi.com. Prezi is like a fancier version of PowerPoint and it is also free.
Have fun at your incredibly specific theme party!
CatsMeow August 3, 2013, 11:50 am
I have a Chromebook that only operates on Chrome and Google apps. So I do have something very Powerpoint-esque, but my group already has an actual Powerpoint we’re all working off of, and my program isn’t entirely compatible with it. So I either have to get to a computer or… write out what needs to be included and hope someone else will enter it for me? Ack.
Sobriquet August 3, 2013, 1:47 pm
Can you open PowerPoint in Google Drive? I know you can open Excel and Word documents through drive, so maybe you can open pp, too
othy August 3, 2013, 2:24 pm
That was my thought too. How do you like the Chromebook for work? Mr. Othy is going back to school, and that’s one of the options we’re looking at for schoolwork while on campus.
CatsMeow August 3, 2013, 6:25 pm
It’s… ok. I don’t mind using google docs to write papers and stuff, but I turn in a lot of assignments online and some instructors have trouble retrieving the docs, even when I share it with them AND give them the link. If I was just printing it out and handing it in, it would be fine, though.
I bring it with me to class, which is nice because it’s small, lightweight, and the battery lasts a long time. Most of the PowerPoints that instructors post are viewable so I’m not sure what the problem was with my group’s project, BUT Word docs don’t transfer to Google docs well.
I have (er, had) a perfectly functioning desktop with Microsoft Office, so I wanted something cheap. I mostly use my Chromebook for internet and to watch Netflix in bed. So it’s perfect for that! But ever since my hard drive crashed on my desktop and I’ve ONLY had my Chromebook, I’ve been noticing all its downfalls.
othy August 4, 2013, 4:47 pm
Fair enough. We do have several (read: 3, for the 2 of us) functioning desktops in our house, so having a working computer for use at home isn’t an issue. We just want something for him to take to class and to work on homework between classes. Seems like your major issues are in the translation, which can be done on our desktops at home.
CatsMeow August 3, 2013, 6:20 pm
When I tried to open what they had saved, I think the formatting was SO OFF that google docs couldn’t do anything with it. Most of the slides looked blank because I guess there were animations and graphs and stuff that wouldn’t show up.
Anyway, I just went to a regular library and worked on it there, so it’s done. Although I had to drive back and forth about 4 times because I kept forgetting shit. It’s just one of those days!
Laura August 3, 2013, 3:03 pm
Import their ppt into Google Docks (this will potentially change the formatting); copy their slides, and then re-write your own over them. Let them know there may need to be formatting changes because of your computer, but it shouldn’t be that extensive unless they’re being weird and using super fancy slides.
rachel August 3, 2013, 12:34 pm
Ross gets here in a half hour, and he’s here for the whole month!! I’m so excited to live a normal life with him for a bit.
I’m pissed though – I’ve been trying to cook more and I bought a bunch of meat last weekend. I went to put a roast into the crock pot a little while ago, and it had already gone bad! Stupid beef. I should have checked the use by date. What a waste – I actually tried this time!
Sobriquet August 3, 2013, 2:04 pm
Oh no! I usually try to cook beef within a day or two of purchasing. I just don’t trust it to sit in the fridge much longer than that.
bethany August 3, 2013, 2:14 pm
Me, too! If I buy meat on Sunday I have to use or freeze it by Tuesday. I’m paranoid.
Sobriquet August 3, 2013, 2:47 pm
I’m also cautious to the point where I circle back around to the meat section at the very end of grocery shopping just so that the chicken/beef/turkey is unrefrigerated for the least amount of time. Otherwise you run the risk of meats going bad before you even get home!
rachel August 3, 2013, 4:40 pm
Yeah, I usually try to use it within 3, ideally. I get all optimistic and plan to cook a lot during the week, and there are just days that it doesn’t happen and I eat veggies and dip with some sliced cheese instead. It’s easier when Ross is here, cuz he just cooks, haha.
Sobriquet August 3, 2013, 2:00 pm
I am very happy this weekend because my roommates (and their dog) will be gone for 3 whole weeks! Soon to be BIL and SIL are getting married in a couple weeks and instead of a honeymoon, they’re spending time with their families. The most horrible things have been happening to SIL, though. She broke her big toe a week ago and will be in a boot on her wedding day and then yesterday afternoon she fell while crossing the street and badly chipped her front tooth. Horrifying and really sad.
As for the weekend, I plan to lounge around, go to the river and drink with friends. Hopefully we’ll have our location and resort picked out by next weekend so I can start doing the fun stuff like make DIY STD cards and pick out a non-wedding wedding dress. Although looking at resorts throughout Mexico and the Caribbean has been pretty fun, so far!
bethany August 3, 2013, 2:13 pm
Nothing exciting going on this weekend for me. My husband is shooting a wedding today, so he’s gone all day. 🙁 I’ve decided to do a bunch of deep cleaning today. Stuff I’ve been meaning to do for a long time, but never really get around to. I also bought a new trashcan and shower curtain hooks for the bathroom. Exciting stuff. All you people in your 20’s, take note, this is the kind of stuff you have to look forward to!
GatorGirl August 3, 2013, 3:40 pm
We got a new shower curtain liner a few months back and it was the highlight of my week. I spent my Friday night cleaning our apartment. I fell your pain.
othy August 3, 2013, 2:26 pm
Mr. Othy’s last day of work was yesterday. I’m officially the sugarmomma in our relationship! He’s got two weeks off (jealous) and then starts school. He’s finishing his bachelor’s degree. I’m so excited we can afford for him to go to school full time without having to work.
GatorGirl August 3, 2013, 3:53 pm
Shocker I bought a two piece! It’s this bottom in black and a black and white polka for bandeau.

We’re currently driving from FL to NC to go to the beach (logical no?). I hate long car rides.
GatorGirl August 3, 2013, 5:20 pm
We just stopped in traffic for almost an hour in rural GA because of a bunch of dead hogs. What? I almost peed in the car. I hate car rides.
bethany August 3, 2013, 7:21 pm
wtf? Dead hogs?
I would have peed on the side of the road!
What beach are you going to?
GatorGirl August 3, 2013, 7:41 pm
Yes, big dead dismembered hogs. It wa gross.
We’re heading to Topsail (or Tops’l for everyone yhat doesn’t read Southern). GGuys parents rented a house for all the kids for the week. I’m excited about being there but the drive is wearing on me. We’re sour to hit the 8 hour mark and still about 120 miles out. Ugh.
CatsMeow August 4, 2013, 4:36 am
Who’s drunk? I’m drunk! Who had an awesome night? I had an awesome night!
Lyra August 4, 2013, 10:59 am
My weekend has been great. Not too much going on, but I’ve been helping my parents around their house/yard which has been fun since the weather has been gorgeous. I’m also headed to an art fair this afternoon. 🙂
I’m just loving how things are falling together for next year. I’m getting really really excited (albeit nervous) for my new job. I’m enjoying the freedom of being single and being able to flirt with any guy I please. I still need to find a place to live…but that will come in time. Thank youuu, parents.
The guy I’ve been talking to most is apparently really nervous for our date in a couple weeks which I think is super adorable. Apparently he has really liked what I’ve told him about me and he really wants to make a good first impression. I really like what I’ve heard about him too and we can talk easily so I’m really hoping there is good chemistry when we meet in person.
Fabelle August 4, 2013, 10:18 am
My weekend has been pretty chill. My boyfriend is off, so I’ve been hanging out with him (even though of course this is the weekend my friends are all “Heyyy what are you up to?”)
I got coral-colored jeans yesterday, similar to these: I hardly play with color, but they fit really well. Help? I’m thinking a dark gray top would look nice, but I dunno. What do you wear with that color?? Is coral even “in” anymore?
Lyra August 4, 2013, 11:00 am
Those are really cute. And yes I think a dark gray top would match perfectly. Or maybe an off-white/ivory?
Classic August 4, 2013, 11:47 am
You know those striped shirts that Wendy likes, and that sometimes show up on the sidebar here? With wide horizontal stripes? I don’t think I could wear stripes very well myself but you definitely could! I think one of those striped tops would look good with them. Maybe blue and white stripes.
Fabelle August 4, 2013, 12:33 pm
Thanks guys 😀 I think an off-white or ivory would look good too, but I’m terrible about spilling things… and Classic, I did see a striped shirt in my closet today & was like, “hmm!” I like the shirt you linked to!
Classic August 4, 2013, 12:05 pm
Or a more sophisticated stripe/print sort of like this:
Classic August 4, 2013, 12:07 pm
Wow that was some link! Sorry! (Seems to work, though?)
theattack August 5, 2013, 9:07 am
I would wear gray, black, or navy.
Copa August 5, 2013, 10:19 am
I love coral! Was it “in” recently? I’m not the best at keeping up with fashion trends, but if the answer is yes, it means I was cool recently. 🙂
I also love those jeans/colorful denim, but have yet to buy myself a pair because I can’t find a pair that fit me how I like.
In any case, I think dark grey, black, or white would look nice. My go-to with coral is to usually wear some turquoise-y blue accessories with it, so I’d probably do coral jeans + off-white top + turquoise-y accessories.
theattack August 4, 2013, 12:32 pm
I had a crazy dream last night where I spent the night at Fabelle’s parents’ house with her while they were out of town. We thought it would be really fun to hang out in her parents’ minivan in the driveway, so we were drinking and playing cards and eating cheese in the back of the van when we noticed a burglar upstairs in the house. We were relieved that we were outside in the van instead of inside the house and thought we would just drive away. Before Fabelle could climb into the driver’s seat, a scary gang member opened the sliding door and grabbed my legs. He said something threatening or whatever, and I can’t remember, but I got away from him and Fabelle drove us away to her aunt’s house in the next town. Her aunt was friendly and okay but her lesbian life partner was awesome. She was telling us about how she loves fountains, and she had just convinced Fabelle’s aunt to convert their living room to a room with a giant marble fountain. Then we ate more cheese, and we ate popcorn with cheese on it too. And that was the end.
katie August 4, 2013, 12:48 pm
Haha, that is so epic. And complete with lots of cheese!
Fabelle August 4, 2013, 12:42 pm
LOL this just made my day!!
Fabelle August 4, 2013, 12:42 pm
^^ that’s a reply to theattack, obviously 🙂
lets_be_honest August 4, 2013, 9:35 pm
I got all the face stuff that was recommended on the forum thread about cystic acne today! Tonight begins an all new LBH, hopefully.
Fabelle August 5, 2013, 9:29 am
I accidentally put my boyfriend’s contact lenses in this morning 😐 I realized right away & took them out, but still. AGH!
d2 August 5, 2013, 7:19 pm
My eyeglasses have progressive lenses – the top part for distance vision and the bottom part for near vision, with a gradual blend between the two. One time when I got a new prescription, they got it backwards, near vision at the top and distance vision at the bottom. Oh wow, was that weird.
I asked the optician if I could wear them for a few minutes in the store before she packed them up to send back to be corrected. It was kind of fun the way they just messed with my brain.
