Happy Friday! How was your week? Mine was good. For the last three weeks, Jackson’s babysitter has been working an extra morning, which was especially helpful for the two weeks straight that Jackson didn’t nap because I would not have had much time to work otherwise. And then this week Jackson not only started napping again, but he also has been taking epic naps (like 3-4 hours!) to make up for the missed sleep, so I have had lots of time to get work done and even just relax a little bit, which has been really nice. I even got three jogs in. Next week Jackson and I start our toddler gardening class and will go back to our two mornings together (plus afternoons and weekends, of course) and that will be fun too, but it was nice for a few weeks to have that extra morning to myself. In five months I’ll have every weekday morning to work and it will be bittersweet/mostly sweet, I’m pretty excited about it.
Anyway, what else? It’s April and finally feeling like spring around here. I wore flats (no socks) more times than I didn’t and it was so liberating to just slip into shoes and not shove my feet into boots or deal with buckles or laces or what have you that I wanted to scream from the rooftops: “I’m free! I’m free!” But I did not. There’s still time though.
Tomorrow night I am taking Drew out for a pre-birthday dinner date. His real birthday is Wednesday and we’ll go to his dad’s place to celebrate, so tomorrow night is just us. I wish I had something new and cute to wear, but I am not buying anything new until I at least lose the seven pounds I gained over the winter (and I’d love to lose an additional few pounds past that, but we’ll see). So far, this has proven to be a good motivator for me because I did well with my diet (or “diet” since I still ate plenty) and exercise this week and managed to lose two pounds. Five more to go and I can buy a new dress. Or jeans. Or both!
And any time I start talking about losing two pounds, I think that’s a pretty good indicator that it’s time to wrap things up, so adios for now. Have a great weekend!
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:13 pm
He Pants has been practicing/writing songs on his ukulele all day, so I can’t wait to go home and hear what he’s come up with. Last week, he put on a concert with our niece, Wee Pants (we gave her a kids’ uke), and it was the best.
This weekend: Tonight, we’re just relaxing and I think He Pants will let me sing back up on a few songs he’s recording. He recorded me singing “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid in the shower last week and is now saying he wants to incorporate it into one of his songs ;/ Tomorrow, we have lunch with my parents and a dinner party in the city.
I think we are going to walk Forbidden Drive on Sunday, which is what I’m most looking forward to. In other news, he didn’t get the job in Boston 🙁 I’m trying really hard to keep his spirits up and while he was really excited about that position, we at least also know that we’ll be sticking around Philly for longer than we thought (!!!!). So, that gives us some stability and we were able to book our July vacay to Maine!!!! It’s all about perspective, right?
Bethany April 4, 2014, 4:16 pm
Rudy might be going to Wissahickon on Sunday…. Just sayin’.
🙂
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:19 pm
Let’s keep in touch! I’m dying for a good walk in the woods.
bethany April 4, 2014, 4:22 pm
Yes! I might be meeting a friend there Saturday or Sunday, but if not, I’m sure Dave and I will want to take him if it’s nice out. I will text you.
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:30 pm
Perfect.
lets_be_honest April 4, 2014, 4:35 pm
Maine!
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:38 pm
Yes!! We are staying with friends in Bar Harbor the first week of July. So, we’ll be there for my 36th AND the fourth! I can’t wait. With all of the uncertainty we have going on right now, it felt really good to book our flights. 🙂
LlamaPajamas April 4, 2014, 4:36 pm
I’m sorry He Pants didn’t get the Boston job, but hooray for everything else! And seriously, Wee Pants might be the cutest name in the world.
lets_be_honest April 4, 2014, 4:40 pm
I’m just wondering if the child is still pee-your-pants aged, because Pee Pants would be a great name.
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:43 pm
Hahaha that’s brilliant. No, she’s fully potty trained 🙂
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:42 pm
Aw, thank you. I know He Pants will appreciate the support! He actually has decided to start looking into academia again (he’s worked at UPenn’s labs before), which we think will provide more opportunities.
I’ve been trying to think of a DW name for our niece since we spend so much time with her, and Wee Pants came to me first thing this morning. 🙂
bethany April 4, 2014, 4:21 pm
This week has been really stressful because Rudy has been having diarrhea off and on all week. He went on the floor twice and has gone in his crate Wednesday, Thursday and today (Dave went home at lunch to check on him). He’s going to the vet tomorrow, thank God. He hasn’t thrown up at all, he still wants to eat, and h’s still got a TON of energy, so I’m not really sure what’s going on with him. So hopefully we can get that under control this weekend. I plan on doing a very thorough cleaning of all our floors this weekend. Ick.
Other than that, I don’t really have any plans. I might take Rudy to the park (as I mentioned above) with a friend and stalk No Pants. I’m also going to try to get some garden prep work done if it stops raining.
kerrycontrary April 4, 2014, 4:32 pm
Sorry 🙁 Dogs with tummy troubles are annoying but also scary. And a pain to clean it all up. Maybe he ate something. Or he’s just stressed about transitioning to your home? Usually it works itself out unless he got worms or something (take a poop sample to the vet—gross!)
bethany April 4, 2014, 4:34 pm
Yeah, we have to make sure to take the stool sample. I was wondering if it was stress related, but he was fine for the first few weeks we had him… So… I dunno.
kerrycontrary April 4, 2014, 4:37 pm
Has he eaten cat poop? Dogs love cat poop. One time Summer had the runs soooo bad and she lost so much weight and she wouldn’t drink and it was over the 4th of july so no vets were open and I literally thought she was going to die. Then the day I get her to the vet she starts to get better, of course.
bethany April 4, 2014, 4:40 pm
There is a high likelihood he has had some cat poop. We put a cat door on the laundry room where the litter boxes are, so he can’t get in there, but when we take him out of the crate and let him out after work he has to go through the laundry room, so he could have gotten into them.
iwannatalktosampson April 4, 2014, 4:40 pm
Funny sampson diarrhea story. I think I told you that dogs under – I don’t know like 2 for sure, maybe 1 – have really sensitive stomachs. One night at like 4 am he woke us up and had such bad explosive diarrhea it got like up on the wall. So Ethan took him to the vet and we were worried the vet wouldn’t believe us, but Sampson was a good dog and had diarrhea all over the exam table in the middle of the check up. They got him on meds right away.
GatorGirl April 4, 2014, 4:37 pm
On the plus side he is very good at his commands!
LlamaPajamas April 4, 2014, 4:39 pm
Poor Rudy! Here’s a dogku for him:
Rudy poopy butt
sick but adorable pup
please get better soon!
bethany April 4, 2014, 4:40 pm

othy April 4, 2014, 9:46 pm
Llamapajamas – I’m so glad you’re around. Don’t ever leave.
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:25 pm
I’ve been thinking about Rudy all day. I’m crossing my fingers that he feels better very soon. I’m happy that, besides the diarrhea, he seems to be doing ok!
Please don’t forget to stalk me on Sunday.
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:26 pm
Oops – I meant to reply to Bethany.
bethany April 4, 2014, 4:32 pm
Awww… That’s sweet! Thank you for your concern. I hope he starts getting better soon… It’s really frustrating, and I’m sure he’s uncomfortable, too.
On the plus side, Calzo didn’t attack him at all yesterday, and our other cat is finally starting to come out of hiding!!
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:36 pm
I’m happy Calzo is considering being a good brother!
GatorGirl April 4, 2014, 4:32 pm
We’re going to a downtown arts festival Sunday afternoon. Hopefully it’s not too warm (I know, FL problems, shut up) because the shade is hit or miss. I am hoping we’ll find something affordable, but it’s also just a nice afternoon. Tomorrow is the Gators final four game which we’re pumped for (Bethany, GGuy didn’t go. The money was adding up quick. Boo.) and hopefully it will mean we play in the national championship Monday! We’re also booking tickets to go to my 10 year reunion and my brothers high school graduation this weekend! And maybe our one year anniversary trip! And maybe a Flyers game!
bethany April 4, 2014, 4:36 pm
I was wondering what you decided! I think it’s worth it to not go and then use all that money he would have spent to drink all the beers in Philly 🙂
GatorGirl April 4, 2014, 4:39 pm
hahaha. It literally came down to the last hour when he finally decided. I’m glad he didn’t go, because now we have our weekend together, but I totally understand how hard it was to choose. One of the other guys decided not to go as well which made it easier for him to stay. (if only I could get student tickets, we totally would have gone!)
kerrycontrary April 4, 2014, 4:34 pm
Ahhhh work has been insane this week. People have ridiculous expectations of how powerful librarians are. Or how much information they can find in a given time. So I am ready for the weekend! Going to the baseball game tomorrow with THIRTY friends after tailgating (tailgating for a baseball game!). We’re all sitting together. It’s ridiculous. Ok, I don’t know ALL of them, but I probably know like 25 of them.
GatorGirl April 4, 2014, 4:36 pm
Yay tailgating!
LlamaPajamas April 4, 2014, 4:42 pm
I’m going through the same thing at work right now! I’m a medical librarian and people either expect me to find EVERY SINGLE THING IN THE WORLD or think they can do a better search themselves. I can’t win either way. I usually love my job but the past few weeks have been trying my patience.
kerrycontrary April 4, 2014, 4:46 pm
Yes I think there’s something about special librarians… (I’m a business/corporate librarian). Are you going to SLA? But yeh, people think I can find everything in the whole world ever. Oh and if it’s specific to certain random countries like Uraguay or Namibia that would be just GREAT. NO!
LlamaPajamas April 4, 2014, 4:57 pm
Nope, I never go to conferences. I don’t even work in my company’s library – I’m on the research side.
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:48 pm
Kinda related, but maybe not: When I worked in Editorial, people expected me to know how to spell every word in the dictionary. I swear I would get 10 calls a day.
kerrycontrary April 4, 2014, 4:50 pm
That’s hilarious. I’m hoping this is before the days of dictionary.com
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:53 pm
I wish I could say it was, but I was the editor in 2008 and dictionary.com definitely existed :/ When I told peope they could just look it up, they would get so pissed and asked to be transferred to someone who “knew how to spell things.” HA.
Addie Pray April 4, 2014, 4:40 pm
I AM STARTING A DIET THIS WEEKEND GODDAMNIT AND THIS TIME I MEAN IT. THIS IS SSSSSTHERIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:56 pm
I downloaded the Weight Watchers app a month ago. Does that count?
LlamaPajamas April 4, 2014, 5:00 pm
Ha! I lost over 40 pounds on WW in 2011/2012, then started gaining it all back at the beginning of last year when I couldn’t bear to track the points in one more bite of food. I’m up almost 50 pounds and keep stress eating because I’m so upset about my weight. 🙂 Why do cupcakes have to be so good?!
No Pants April 4, 2014, 5:08 pm
Cupcakes! I just ate one the size of my head! Foiled again! I was on WW last year and really learned how to portion control, but I swear I was hungry ALL THE TIME. And I just couldn’t eat another salad. I agree about not being able to stand tracking the points. It really stressed me out at one point!!
LlamaPajamas April 4, 2014, 5:14 pm
My weight problems started when I moved to Nashville for a fellowship years ago – my commute was awful, my kitchen was small and not conducive to cooking, and I took steroids for about a month to try to help with my autoimmune disorder. The steroids made me want to eat all the things! I’ve always been a stress eater but it’s been out of control since then. I exercise a lot though so hopefully I’m at least somewhat healthy overall.
Addie Pray April 4, 2014, 5:03 pm
Haha. Slow down, grasshopper, let’s not go setting records here!
LlamaPajamas April 4, 2014, 5:05 pm
I’m an overachiever when it comes to gaining weight.
Addie Pray April 4, 2014, 5:27 pm
you’re an inspiration, LP.

LlamaPajamas April 4, 2014, 4:52 pm
My wedding is 6 months from today! And I’m finally getting really excited about it since my dad is doing so well, cancer-wise! Woohoo! And our honeymoon is finally planned! We’ll be spending a week in the Boston area! We’re going to see a bunch of National Park sites, take a whale watching tour, visit Cape Cod, etc. I realize I’ve used my yearly allotment of exclamation points in just this paragraph but I don’t care because I’m just that happy!
I don’t have anything exciting planned this weekend. I need to start cleaning and getting rid of junk in my apartment since we’re moving next month, but I’ll probably end up binge watching “Bridezillas” or something equally unproductive. Llama guy is making chicken tonight with a new chicken rub we bought the other week, and our new favorite game is yelling “chicken rub!” and making obscene gestures. So that’s my big Friday night!
lets_be_honest April 4, 2014, 4:54 pm
Really happy to hear your dad is doing well! Chicken rub sounds…yuck. Similar to all the dog shit stories above.
Yay exclamation points!!
No Pants April 4, 2014, 4:58 pm
Did you and Llama Guy find a place in the area?
So happy your dad is feeling great!! And that everything is great all around! You deserve all the exclamation points.
kerrycontrary April 4, 2014, 5:02 pm
OOH didn’t realize you’re an october bride too (me too!). The time is going by quickly and hitting the 6 month mark is definitely freaky!
LlamaPajamas April 4, 2014, 5:12 pm
I know! It suddenly feels very real. Do you have a dress yet? I’m going the nontraditional route and wearing a fancy dress (probably in navy) rather than an actual wedding dress, so I’m not going to shop until this summer. But I’m so excited to try on pretty, sparkly dresses!
LlamaPajamas April 4, 2014, 5:04 pm
Even if the chicken rub is disgusting we’ll still have an excuse for obscene gestures!
.
We haven’t found a place yet – we’ve been looking for months but everything that’s listed is available immediately, and landlords (understandably) haven’t wanted to hold anything for us for a month+. So we’re just starting to look in earnest. I love looking at townhouses though so it’s fun for now.
lemongrass April 4, 2014, 5:46 pm
Happy to hear about your dad!
theattack April 4, 2014, 5:40 pm
In an hour I’m meeting P at a hookah bar next to my office, which is exciting because hookah is awesome AND because I actually have things near my office now. My old office was in the middle of nowhere, and the only thing for miles was a gas station with a tiny subway inside. I love working downtown, even if it is a very small city!
.
And this weekend I’m shopping for office decorations because I have so much empty space, and it clearly needs inspirational quotes and happy colors and stuff. I’m thinking of making a sign that has this quote:
.
“Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.” – Helen Keller.
.
It seems realistic but also positive, right? And I’m also reading a great book about trauma right now. If anyone is interested in that sort of thing, it’s called “Trauma and Recovery: The aftermath of violence – from domestic abuse to political terror.”
rachel April 4, 2014, 7:14 pm
I’d bet money my sister has that book on her shelf – she is a clinical psychologist and is particularly interested in trauma.
I’m jealous of the hookah! I haven’t had any in forever. Ross can’t/won’t go with me since he’s a former smoker.
lemongrass April 4, 2014, 5:47 pm
I climbed a freaking mountain today. I’m going to pay for it in a few hours when you’ll have to peel me off the couch but I did it!!!
Fabelle April 4, 2014, 5:51 pm
So, oy, Fabello’s 30th bday is tomorrow and I wound up planning a get together of friends at a bar. People said they would come, like enough people that I don’t feel lame about it. But I still had the urge to cancel it & actually texted his one friend like “REASSURE ME” & Fabello is no help because he’s so committed to pretending to hate his bday that he was encouraging me to cancel. UGH I’M SURE ITLL BE FINE but I hate organizing social shit. How the fuck would I plan a wedding
rachel April 4, 2014, 6:04 pm
I have issues organizing things too. I’m always afraid no one will come. Like even planning our super small wedding, Ross keeps having to reassure me that people WILL come. I’m not convinced.
Northern Mermaid April 4, 2014, 6:12 pm
I get super stressed organizing things too. We had a birthday/Halloween party for NMman’s birthday this year and I was so scared planning it because we invited a ton of people and I thought no one would come—but then like 30 people did. It was really a nice feeling, and I think it made him feel good too.
HmC April 4, 2014, 6:43 pm
I hate being the organizer too, but my wedding felt way different because people are much less likely to flake and are much more likely to go in the first place.
Northern Mermaid April 4, 2014, 6:15 pm
I am applying for all sorts of jobs these days, even kind of jokingly. Like today, I’m applying for a job on an Ghost Hunters in Alaska style show.
Lyra April 4, 2014, 7:06 pm
This morning we had a spring snowstorm so school was two hours late…which I definitely needed because it took a full two hours to get to work today. I’m so glad we have snow plows but I got caught behind 7 of them (at once!) on my way to work. Oh well. I still got there on time. Yay for leaving super early!
Navy Guy is in town tonight but has some political thing he’s helping with so I won’t see him today. He’s been very vague with what exactly it is, probably because political views are one of our biggest differences hah. We’ll get to spend time together tomorrow and Sunday though. 🙂 If it’s nice/dry we’ll likely go for a walk and maybe do some hiking or something outside. I also have my bike so I wouldn’t mind going for a ride this weekend.
Also, how the hell is it April already?? These weeks just seem to fly by.
Lyra April 4, 2014, 10:42 pm
Oh and also! My group at school is the cutest. They really want to make shirts, which was originally my idea…today when I showed them my original draft, they told me they want all their names under “Ms. Lyra’s Team”. I think it’s adorable that they’re so proud to be part of this group that they specifically requested it. Talk about a sense of community! I’m proud of my kiddos.
No Pants April 4, 2014, 7:45 pm
Do this right now.

My week has been stupid. Children’s oncology made me cry, like, 3 times. Then I got sick. Like, disgustingly sick. I puked and peed out my butt (at the same time!) all night and all day. Also had a fever. Had to call in sick to clinical, which means… yay… I have to write a ten page paper to make up for my absence. Went in today even though I still feel sick, suctioned sputum, and almost puked on my patient. I had to step away because I was gagging.
.
I can’t even make real sentences, haha. I’ve got to go to Springfield for my brother’s bday tomorrow and somehow finish all the homeworks. Yay, weekend!
Northern Mermaid April 4, 2014, 8:12 pm
I have a soy intolerance that leads to that kind of nastiness. My mom calls it “Human fountaining” Because we’re all very appropriate.
CatsMeow April 4, 2014, 9:20 pm
Nice! I know most people have probably had it come out both ends at the same time, but it was a legitimate first for me. I usually go long stretches (7-10 years) without ever puking, but I’ve already done it a few times this year. Go, me.
Lyra April 4, 2014, 8:32 pm
I had food poisoning a couple years ago and had that happen. It sucked so bad. Hope you feel better soon.

Also, Wendy, are those your feet? They don’t look like how i picture your feet – not that I picture your feet ever. This got me thinking we should do a post of our feet and let readers guess. Unless I’m the only person who thinks she can guess what commenters’ feet look like?

Has anyone else ever worked at a job where coworkers don’t pull their weight?
I’m feeling a bit upset by my team at work right now. I’ve been working a six-day week for the last seven months and am feeling worn out. Pretty much everyone did a six-day week for four of those months, so I was fine with it then since we had a busy period and I knew it was only temporary. After the busy period, my boss put us back on normal-ish schedules, and my normal schedule lasted about two weeks until someone else was saying he needed help, and it was back to six days for me. Everyone else has five-day weeks.
I’m now at the point where I need an extra day free from work, and my boss was unable to give this to me because even though he tried to get me covered, no one could help. This seems to be a chronic issue with me. I have almost always covered others’ shifts, save cases of pre-standing plans on my end when asked at that last minute to help. At times, my boss has complained and asked why I’m going to be absent or why I might not be available to work. In one e-mail when I said I had prior plans already, he was asking why and pushed for more hours even though I clearly stated my availability. Meanwhile, he does not question other people’s time off requests and let someone new off about one week after he started because the person had a “really important” engagement party (no, not my coworker’s own party either…it was for a friend). Guess who was the lucky loser to cover for the new person while he went partying?
I am job searching, but how can I deal with this in the meantime? Refusing to cover for them would probably make my boss think less of me. Am I stuck just sucking it up?
Lyra April 5, 2014, 11:39 am
Your boss sounds shitty. Frankly, I would put your foot down and say that you can’t work extra anymore and he’ll have to find someone else to cover. If he’s not ok with that, well that’s his problem because you don’t deserve to be treated like crap. It’s absolutely not fair to you that you’re the ONLY one who works extra. If you don’t put your foot down he will continue to walk all over you and you will continue to have to work 6 days per week. Stand up for yourself. Who cares if he thinks less of you? Find someone else to be your reference for your job search. It sounds like he isn’t worth anyone’s time.
rachel April 5, 2014, 12:57 pm
Honestly, I think you might just have to deal with it. If you are job hunting, you will want to use your boss as a reference, so now doesn’t seem like the time to be trying to do less work. It might make it seem to him like you want to phone it in until you can leave.
Lyra April 5, 2014, 1:26 pm
I definitely agree that she shouldn’t *try* to do less work, but from what it sounds like her work situation sounds pretty toxic. Working 6 days per week for 7 months would be exhausting. I’m advocating for her to work her ass off for 5 days per week and put forth her all time best effort. It sounds like her boss is walking all over her.
Sue Jones April 5, 2014, 12:34 pm
I spent a week on Spring Break and came back to full tilt boogie at work and both my son and I have had extra rehearsals for our shows. So haven’t been on here too much… A lot of extra work is a good thing when you are self employed… This weekend I am helping out with my son’s play and next weekend he has his plays and I have my concerts… I think I get to relax a bit again in 3 weeks! Good thing I got my taxes and our garden in early this year! But it is all good! I haven’t been so busy in this way since grad school and when my son was very young (where every spare minute counts towards getting something done…). I realize that it is all self-inflicted at this point in my life too!

Fabelle April 6, 2014, 12:14 pm
Okay so, the party was fine. I did get a little fatigued, just from, like, needing to stay there the whole time due to being the host, but Fabello had a good time.
Also, I finally got my postcard!! Made my day 🙂 Thank you Wendy!!

I just hosted in-laws for 4 days straight and I’m exhausted. My FSIL aggressively stared at me the entire time. Nigel literally stepped in front of me or twisted me around to block the glares- it was that bad and noticeable. I wish I felt comfortable glaring right back at her or calling her out on it.
.
Our wedding shower was yesterday and it was a hit! I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. We got some sweet, unexpected gifts, but it’s probably not good etiquette to talk about them? So I won’t. It was a lot of fun.
.
All the fam has left and Nigel and I are about to get a burger and a pitcher of Shiner and just unload/recharge before curling up at home with Game of Thrones and Cosmos. And then we’ll do it all again next weekend!
Addie Pray April 6, 2014, 7:59 pm
That’s great! (Not the part about the FSIL. Why the growl / is she just an innately jealous girl?) The rules of etiquette don’t count on line. Meaning, sure, maybe you don’t go running your mouth to FSIL about the unexpected gifts, but here you can! Ok spill it. You got a horse, didn’t you?
sobriquet April 6, 2014, 9:42 pm
No ponies, but I did get copper pots! Which I wanted to share with the DW community, because obviously.
Addie Pray April 6, 2014, 9:55 pm
Haha awesome. Now all you need is, like, a toothless groomsmen and you’ll be all set.
GatorGirl April 7, 2014, 8:24 am
Oh, what was unexpected!? I love unexpected gifts!
GatorGirl April 7, 2014, 8:27 am
This weekend was insane. I worked 8 hours, accidentally got very drunk, walked two miles home, barfed in my kitchen sink (yikes), then the next day walked two miles back to get y car and got sunburn. Then planted a tomato plant and played corn hole in the back yard and went to bed early. I need another day to recover.
Oh, and GGuy climbed a tree in the parking lot of the bar we accidentally got very drunk at. We where a hot mess.
