This was a heavy week. You know what can help lighten things up a little as we head into one of the last weekends of the summer? Cute cat stuff! Lots of cute cat stuff (and dog stuff and owl stuff and otter stuff and panda stuff (love this!) and fish stuff and shark stuff and fox stuff and so on).
Happy Friday, everyone! I hope your weekend is full of all good things, like baby giggles, champagne bubbles, fireflies as dusk, and really good hotdogs. See you back here on Monday.
Portia August 15, 2014, 4:13 pm
Well, I’ve been waiting to hear back about a (very well paid) internship I interviewed for last week, and I got it! So, there will be a lot of celebrating this weekend. I should totally spend my first paycheck before I get it, right? 😉
.
Welp, here’s to the next few months of not much free time, and hopefully finishing my dissertation sometime in there… Happy weekend!
JK August 15, 2014, 4:14 pm
Congratulations!
Portia August 15, 2014, 4:18 pm
Thanks! 🙂
Addie Pray August 15, 2014, 4:47 pm
Congrats!! What will you be doing? More fun linguisticsy stuff?
Portia August 15, 2014, 5:57 pm
Thanks! It’s tough out there for a linguist, so less linguistic-y… It’s an analyst job for a federal agency. I have a bunch of friends there, and the job sounds like being a grad student: doing research, analyzing it, and writing something up. And since everyone’s said they basically give you the same work as a full time employee, I can find out if I like doing it before I’m actually working there. And they pay me. So, win-win-win!

Congrats!
Portia August 15, 2014, 5:59 pm
Thanks!
Dear Wendy August 15, 2014, 4:27 pm
Yay! Congrats!
Portia August 15, 2014, 5:58 pm
Thanks! Y’all are making me feel so special!
JK August 15, 2014, 4:33 pm
It´s a(nother) long weekend here, and the weather is supposd to be AMAZING. So yay for that! No plans as of yet though.
MaterialsGirl August 15, 2014, 4:40 pm
Dinner will be cooked for me this evening. WHOHO! I have a 20 miler tomorrow morning and need to start early to avoid the Air and Water show craziness. I am so excited to sleep in on Sunday, though! Saturday night i’m going to kingston mines for the first time and maybe paddleboarding? At some point, I would like to actually get my clothes put away at my new place.
HAPPY CHAMPAGNE FRIDAY TO YOU, DW’ers!
Addie Pray August 15, 2014, 4:49 pm
god, the air and water show is so ….. loud. i haven’t heard many planes today but yesterday they were so close – and so loud – i was certain one was about to crash into into my building. my deep thought about air and water shows is that (i) they are a waste of money, (ii) they’re dangerous, and (iii) all that money and resources would be better spent doing a million other things that benefit the world.
Diablo August 15, 2014, 5:56 pm
Is there something about this week and airshows? we have one here too, and my attitude is about the same. The planes tend to drown out my simple folk songs, which may be a benefit to some in the neighbourhood. But don’t say that to a vet – the air show keeps alive the glory of the last moral war or something. (In case anyone wants to attack me for the sarcasm, i support people in the armed forces, but am generally against any kind of armed conflict, particularly in suburban MO.)
Dear Wendy August 15, 2014, 4:58 pm
Air and water show weekend is the worst weekend of chicago! Except for those polar vortex weekends.
Portia August 18, 2014, 9:30 am
Ugh, I remember those weekends, where we basically had to avoid the city at all costs. The traffic going into the city was so painful…
MaterialsGirl August 18, 2014, 11:07 am
Growing up, i really liked the Oshkosh Air show. It was pretty cool, and we got to tour B52’s and such. The Chicago one is hard because all the suburbanites come into the city and just don’t act right!
othy August 15, 2014, 5:27 pm
I’m doing a 20 miler this weekend too! Best of luck.
MaterialsGirl August 18, 2014, 11:06 am
well, mine ended up being 17 because of airshow/time constraints, but I’ll get my third 20 miler in next weekend. How did yous go, Othy?
peppers87 August 15, 2014, 4:40 pm
Ugh I’m not in a great mood. I accidentally ruined a piece of lab equipment that I need for an experiment and my boss asked me if I am pregnant (nope, just fat).
Woohoo.

Wendy’s “shark stuff” comment made me think:
Happy shark week everyone.

It’s going to be a good weekend. The weather is awesome. supper with friends tonight, then a firepit guitar pull with other musical friends. Then Edmonton friends for brunch in the morning, and a Toronto friend tomorrow night. Need a little lightness after this awful week.
Addie Pray August 15, 2014, 4:51 pm
i leave for vacation tomorrow with the entire Pray family! so if i comment less (or more likely more) next week, that’s why! yay, vacation!

My new obsession seems to be beauty blogs and through a couple of them I found two really awesome new drug store beauty products!!! I’ve tried soooo many foundations and my oily face doesn’t seem to hold onto it very well. But the Cover Girl 3-in-1 (primer, concealer, foundation) Stay Fabulous make up WORKED. I got home and I looked basically the same as when I left this morning. Highly recommend. The other one was a sea salt texturizing spray for my hair which was like $4 but it helped my bun stay in place alllll day. I LOVE The Small Things Blog for hair stuff…and she loves expensive products so I was searching high and low for a similar texturizing spray but much more in my budget. I’m super excited. And I felt gorgeous all day. Win.
.
Other than that things are actually pretty awesome. I’m legit falling in lurrrrrve with Navy Guy. Not that I wasn’t in lurrrrrve before, but I’m realizing just how lucky I am. He treats me so well! And he takes care of me…not that I NEED taking care of because I definitely don’t, but I know with him that he will always be there when I need it. It’s so freaking awesome. So so so so awesome. I’ve been approaching this relationship with an open mind and I have done everything in my power not to rush things and I definitely think it has helped. Things have been happening organically and though we still have a lot to hash out yet, we’re both on the same page and when we talk about our hopes and dreams there’s a lot of “we” and “us” thrown in. It’s exciting!
.
ANYWAY…hahaha…not many big things going on this weekend. I have a hot date with my kitty and book and maybe Netflix tonight. 🙂 NG is coming over tomorrow into Sunday. We’re apparently renting a boat with his parents and brothers on Sunday…that should be fun. 🙂
Lyra August 15, 2014, 7:43 pm
Also…boat ride means I need to find a maxi dress right? Old Navy here I come.

Just back from a big family vacation at Lake Tahoe where no one killed anyone else and everyone had fun. I got to kayak for the first time and loved it!
This may not seem like a big deal to anyone but it was almost a year ago that I was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer and while I’m still undergoing maintenance chemo, I am not in remission! Life is good.
Moneypenny August 16, 2014, 8:37 pm
Lake Tahoe is amazing!! Especially in the summertime!
Congrats on your remission- that’s fantastic!
othy August 17, 2014, 9:33 pm
Congratulations on the remission, that’s great!

Portia August 18, 2014, 9:27 am
Congrats on being in remission! It is definitely a big deal.

That SHOULD say: I am NOW in remission!
