Weekend Open Thread and Links

Can you believe we’ve made it to Memorial Day weekend?! Do you have any plans? I’m going to Louisville, KY to see some friends and I’m very excited for both the reunion and visiting a city I’ve never been before. Any recs?

“One of the skills I’ve acquired since turning 40 is the ability to recognize there will likely always be a gap between seeing a photo of myself and appreciating it. That gap, I’ve realized, is the time it takes me to overcome all the ways I’ve been taught to value myself in the world. The older I get, the more I understand that delay as evidence of a sort of theft. One that I’m only now understanding has occurred, and it is my anger over that which has helped shorten it.”

If you have kids, you’re probably very familiar with the work of Eric Carle, a beloved artist and children’s book author who passed away this week at the age of 91. I thought this anecdote about him was such a sweet story and made me like him even more.

I thought this was interesting/funny (and as an American who grew up abroad and moved to the states at 17, I related to some of these): 50 Things Basically Every Single American Thinks Are Completely Normal But Are Actually Very, Very Strange

50 American Things – I find more than half of these things baffling, and I was raised in the US.

Memorial Day – I was never one to pay much attention to holidays. I thought last Monday was Memorial Day, and didn’t figure it out until later in the week. It turns out that I have an appointment to get my haircut on the real Memorial Day. Another one of those weird American things; people work on holidays.

Tiny Stories – These are always good.

    The Friends reunion was bizarre.

“We’re all truly such good friends in real life. The bond we have is incredible. Unique. Special. And forever. No, seriously! What? Oh, yeah… that’s true… the six of us have all been together in the same room only ONCE in 17 years… But damn. We are so fucking tight…”
