Dear Wendy

Weekend Open Thread: Best of 2011

First of all: Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas, everyone!

I can’t believe 2011 is winding to a close. What an incredible year it’s been! I started this website. I got pregnant. I traveled to: Austin; Chicago; London, Paris; Chicago (again); and St. Louis. I was hospitalized twice with kidney infections. And I had a baby (with no drugs). And in between all that, I baked some lemon bars, grew a porch garden, grew out my bangs, and went on the “Today Show” once. And since it was such a red-banner year, I’d be remiss if I didn’t highlight some of my favorites from 2011. So, without further ado, here’s my best of 2011 list:

Favorite Movie: “Midnight in Paris”

Favorite Song(s): “Marathon” by Tennis; “Cannons” by Youth Lagoon; “One Red Thread” by Blind Pilot

Favorite Book: I didn’t actually read any books that were published in 2011. Oh, wait. I read Tina Fey’s BossyPants. But my favorite book that I read this year was actually published last year and that was Just Kids.

Favorite Dear Wendy column: I like the ones when y’all get real crazy in the comments, but if I had to go with just the column alone, I don’t know … the one where the woman who ripped up her fiancé’s wedding photos always sticks out in my memory. And I like any bridezilla-themed letter because they’re fun to answer and generally make for popular columns.

Favorite moment: Holding Jackson for the first time is a no-duh answer to that, but watching my mom watch the “Million Dollar Quartet” on her 60th birthday in London was pretty good, too. And having a picnic with Drew along the Seine in Paris wasn’t too bad either.

Favorite TV show: This was the year I watched all four seasons of “Breaking Bad.” Holy shit, that’s good TV.

Favorite new thing: I finally got an iPhone — my first smart phone ever — a couple weeks ago, and all I have to say is: “What took me so long??”

Favorite discovery: I really don’t need to color my hair.

Favorite food: Ooey Gooey Butter Cake ice cream from Ample Hills ice cream shop in Brooklyn. Candy Cane ice cream is a close second. Hells yeah. Oh! And bacon-wrapped brussels sprouts. And when I was pregnant, anything lemon-y never tasted so good.

Favorite drink: Baileys and vodka martini.

Your turn!

I have about 20 minutes to kill before I duck out of work early to head off on my 900-mile road trip home for the holidays. So I’m going to answer all of these even if no one really cares 😉

Favorite Movie: I didn’t get to see very many movies this year, and I honestly can’t remember any that really stuck out. That’s sad, because I used to be *such* a movie buff!

Favorite Song(s): “God Gave me You” by Blake Shelton. I know it’s sappy, but it came during a rough time and really stuck with me.

Favorite Book: Hmm. I didn’t get to read *too* much this year, but I have to say my favorite was the Hunger Games trilogy. The new Meg Cabot book was pretty good, too.

Favorite Dear Wendy column: The one with the lady whose husband kept having kids with his ex.

Favorite moment: My first “date” with my now-bf, after talking constantly online, via text, and on the phone for a month.

Favorite TV show: The Big Bang Theory! Also, How I Met Your Mother 🙂

Favorite new thing: I bought (leased) my first car this year, and it’s NEW. No car repair bills til 2014 (at least)!!

Favorite discovery: Losing weight is really easy if you do it right.

Favorite food: Cookie dough ice cream is actually pretty good. This bears mentioning because I don’t like raw chocolate-chip cookie dough (oatmeal is THE BEST though). Also, this healthy chicken salad recipe from Cooking Light that is so good.

    Favorite drink: Bloody Marys 🙂

Favourite movie and song I´ll leave out, having seen no new movies, and I only listen to oldies radio in the car, so I have no idea.
Favourite book: the last one I managed to read was before I gave birth in April, U is for Undertow (like I´ve mentioned a couple of times, I love Sue Grafton)
Favourite DW column: any nice trainwreck.
Favourite moment: when my eldest met her baby sister for the 1st time, it was really sweet, but emotional at the same time (I´ve got a gorgeous photo sequence of it).
Favourite TV shows: I love Big Bang Theory, The Walking Dead. I´m quite enjoying Revenge as well.
Favourite new thing: my electric beater thingy (Kitchen maid do you call them up there?) made my life so much easier. Is that sad?
Favourite discovery: Hershey´s mint truffle kisses (I just tried them yesterday)
Favourite food: the usuals, pretty much anything that is bad for me.
Favourite drink: fresh orange-strawberry-banana juice. (I don´t drink alcohol)

    Since I don’t want to work…

Favorite Movie: Probably “The silence of the lambs”. Yup, I watched it last week. Go me! I did play some wicked games, though. Like Portal 2 and Team Fortress 2 and DotA 2. And Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Favorite Song(s): Anything from Abney Park’s latest album. Or maybe “Cathouse tragedy” by Voltaire. Or “Jolie Coquine” by Caravan Palace. Or the Team Fortress Theme song?

Favorite Book: I don’t think I read anything published this year either, so I’m going with Lovecraft.

Favorite Dear Wendy column: I can’t choose! Can I pick the this-will-be-deleted open threads?

Favorite moment: I had tons of fun in the Microbiology lab practices we had this year, believe it or not. And having a bunch of people over and drinking and playing pictionary a few weeks ago.

Favorite TV show: I keep reading stuff about how great Breaking bad is. I’ll have to watch it. My discovery this year was definitely Game Of Thrones. Dexter and The Venture Brothers weren’t bad either.

Favorite new thing: My new hardrive? I don’t buy many things other than clothes and stuff for my PC 😛 Though I know I will love the pocket watch I ordered from China, but that will arrive like next month.

Favorite discovery: A couple of classmates I thought were stuck up morons aren’t so bad after all. And another couple of classmates I thought were airheads are indeed ariheads. And Assasin’s Creed sucks.

Favorite food: My grandma’s lemon pie I have to cook myself because she forgot the recipe. Or my onion cream soup.

    Favorite drink: Dark beer.

It’s strange when that happens with food, it’s why I always try things I think I don’t like, just to double check. So far I’ve turned about on salmon, mushrooms, mussels and brussel sprouts, can’t get enough of those tasty little sprouts, especially when I found out there are purple ones too 🙂

That’s exactly what I thought haha. Technically they are ‘red’ in the same way a red onion is purple. They taste great and are really high in vitamin C apparently 🙂 My Dad says you also get purple broccoli but I don’t know if he’s just winding me up because I love it!

Favorite Dear Wendy Column: How to choose?! I agree with silver_dragon_girl that the husband who kept having kids with his ex was classic.

Favorite Moment: Reaching the summit of Mount St Helens! The final mile or so is a scree field that is pure hell to climb and then out of nowhere you’re standing on the rim of the crater and can see Mount Rainier, Mount Adams and Mount Hood surounding you. It was truly breathtaking!

Favorite Movie: Tucker and Dale vs EVIL (seriously, amazingly hilarious)

Favorite Song(s): It will look like I’m copying Bethany, but seriously, the two albums that have been playing nonstop in my car are Adele’s 21 and Mumford and Sons

Favorite Book: I rarely read new books, but probably my favorite book I’ve read this year was The Kite Runner, followed by Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger (the author of A Time Traveler’s Wife which is one of my all time favorites)

Favorite Dear Wendy column: I love the updates, as well as the ones that are almost too ridiculous to believe, like #18

Favorite moment: Well I got to go on a field campaign in the Virgin Islands for a month, so pretty much all of that month was awesome. I got to fly once in the C130 through clouds, lounge on the beach a bit, and best of all – I went kayaking in a bioluminescent bay. That one will stick in my memory forever, so freaking cool!

Favorite TV show: How I Met Your Mother…as far as new shows, I really enjoyed Terra Nova

Favorite new thing: I might have to say my smart phone also…I got it in January, and don’t know how I survived without it

Favorite discovery: Sort of a discovery, more of a new thing learned, but I took some swimming lessons this year, and now I can sort of almost swim! Ok, not really well enough to get me anywhere, but I had never even floated on my own before.

Favorite food: My boyfriend and I have recently started getting better about cooking more and eating out less. Turns out he is a pretty awesome cook. He makes this tomatillo pork chile that’s just mouth watering. Also, this summer, I had key lime pie ice cream once. Yum.

Favorite drink: Pretty much is always beer, though lately I’ve been branching out a bit. My new favorite is a brown ale from a brewery in town called Equinox.

Tucker and Dale Vs Evil was amazing! It is definitely up there in my as yet undefined favourites of the year. I work in a film rental store and have been recommending it to everyone.

Her Fearful Symmetry has to win the oddest book of the year for me, I did really enjoy it though, have still to read The Time Travellers Wife, is it as good as everyone says?

Yes, definitely read The Time Traveler’s Wife. Her Fearful Symmetry was odd, yes, but also touching. I think I like it more because it was written by her. The TIme Traveler’s Wife is just beautiful. You will likely cry, possibly multiple times.

Can I say that every photo of Jackson is cuter than the last one?? He is just precious!

Favorite Movie: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2- because a). it was pretty true to the book and b). I grew up with Harry and co and the final movie being released sort of closed the door on my childhood.

Favorite Song(s): Too many! I know that Brothers came out in 2010, but I listened to “Everlasting Light” on repeat for days this year, also “white blank page” by Mumford and Sons and “How to Love” by Lil Wayne. And, “Rolling in the Deep” came out around the time I got dumped, so you KNOW I listened to that one a lot. In terms of albums, I am still digging “House of Balloons” by the Weeknd and “How Do You Do” by Mayer Hawthorne.

Favorite Book: Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters by Courtney Martin. Recommend to EVERYONE.

Favorite Dear Wendy column: Hmmm, probably the woman who was in an abusive relationship and everyone rallied behind her, as others have suggested. Also the recent “he doesn’t want to wear a condom” letter because of the discussion it started!

Favorite moment: When I opened up my email and saw that acceptance letter for my graduate program. It came after 4 rejection letters from a (different) super competitive program, and I was really starting to worry. The day my parents brought our dog home from the animal shelter was a pretty close second, though.

Favorite TV show: does the fact that a new season of Arrested Development was announced this year count? The only shows I watch regularly are Community, Modern Family and the Big Bang Theory.

favorite movie: from this year? the adjustment bureau comes to mind… but nothing really jumps out at me lol

favorite songs: party rock anthem. i cant ever not dance when its on!!

favorite book: none. i dont read. i wish i did!!

favorite DW column: i love the ones that dont have a clear cut answer- kind of the im-at-a-crossroads ones. i love reading how each individual commenter would take it in a different direction

favorite moment: a tie between jumping around my apartment after finding out that my now job wanted to interview me, knowing that i could finally quit my terrible job, and sitting at my boyfriend’s brothers rehearsal dinner with both sides of their family and finally feeling like I was a part of a family. it brought tears to my eyes… i almost had to excuse myself for a minute. oh, and being able to hold my friend’s day old baby… they are sooo tiny!! i had never seen a baby that young.

favorite tv show: i love criminal minds, but im not supposed to watch it if its dark out or if im alone…. rules which i am currently breaking right now. i get scared!!

favorite new thing: well, none of them are mine… the wedding cake i made for the wedding, the presents that i made after the wedding out of wedding stuff for christmas presents, and my mom’s birthday present that i made! and anything i get using coupons or as freebies from companies.

Favorite Movie: I don’t think I even made it to the theater this year!

Favorite Song(s): “Just a Kiss” Lady Antebellum, “Rolling in the Deep” Adele, and “Raise Your Glass” Pink…pretty much summarize my year.

Favorite Book: I began reading the Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin this year, and I fell in love, both with the books and the show.

Favorite Dear Wendy column: All of them? Okay, okay. Like others, I like reading the updates. It’s nice to see whether or not people who requested your advice or our advice actually listened to it or not. Though, those free-for-all and now gone columns were pretty entertaining.

Favorite moment: My birthday this year. I did a little more than just party on my own this year, so it was wonderful to see which of my friends would come celebrate with me. Is it weird that I had a friend looking forward to my birthday more than I did?

Favorite TV show: Probably Supernatural because I finally caught up on all the seasons and I liked the eye-candy. But, I watch a ton of tv, mostly drama, so I would burn up web space talking about all of them.

Favorite new thing: My boss bought me a laptop. No, really. She did. I had broken my own beyond repair, I was using an ancient desktop, and she used some of the bonus she earns to buy me a laptop. It was a complete surprise and I’ve never been so astounded by someone’s thoughtfulness as that.

Favorite discovery: I am heck of a lot stronger than I thought.

Favorite food: Went to this bar/restaurant on a highway in Virginia on the way back from vacation. Low key, completely homemade, and probably the best food I’ve ever eaten. Everyone was sharing the meals around the table, and I was eating food I normally NEVER touch. I hope it’s doing okay—it was a relatively new place when we stopped in.

Favorite drink: Vodka lemonade or a Jack and Coke. Though I’m not above tequila on my birthday…

    Merry Christmas Eve!

I just drove 8 hours from Chicago to Minneapolis – phew – with a boy, and we talked about porn pretty much the whole way (fyi). And by “just drove” I mean we got here about 6 hours ago. But, still. I’m very tired. Also, I’ve had two drinks – just TWO. That’s my new limit.

    Ok, my turn:

    Favorite drink: wine.
    Favorite wine: red.
    Favorite red: cabernet.
    Favorite cabernet: yes, please.

I’ll answer all the other categories in the morning. But I can answer this category now – Favorite new documentary (new to me): The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia. Holy shit! JK, if you want to see some trainwrecks, check this doc out.

2011 was a tumultuous year. I was still recovering from my car accident. I broke up with a serious boyfriend. I attended the Electric Daisy Carnival. I learned how to cook. I got a dog (who’s the light of my life). I got a job again. Overall, it was a year of hardship and sorrows but I also built the foundation for a very good year ahead of me. I’m very hopeful for 2012.

    Favorite Movie: “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”

Favorite Song(s): Either “Top of the World” by the Cataracs or my classic favorite “Party and Bullshit” by Biggie

Favorite Book: I really enjoyed “Double Helix” which is a Star Trek fan fiction compilation. My all-time favorite is “Jitterbug Perfume” by Tom Robbins.

Favorite Dear Wendy column: I really enjoy all of them, especially the ones that highlight the issues that the new-wave feminism movement brings up.

Favorite moment: Being in front of Tiesto’s stage at the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas. His live music just absolutely entrances me.

Favorite TV show: Star Trek. Always and forever.

    Favorite new thing: Argentinian Malbecs.

    Favorite discovery: tumblr.

Favorite food: Bacon and sweet potatoes.

Favorite drink: Anything with Belvedere and Salted-Caramel syrup in it.

I’m not sure about downloading a copy, but it’s only a little over $10 on Amazon! I highly recommend it, it combines the world of perfume and Pan and demi-gods and immortality and passing through bardos, all wrapped up in philosophy and spirituality and sex.

We didn´t go to many vineyards (I was 6 months pregnant and we had the 3 year old in tow), but it is the most beautiful place.
And family and friends were EXTREMELY happy with the bottles we brought back!

Favorite movie: The King’s Speech (I loved Harry Potter but had massive problems with the movie)
Favorite Song: Roll Away Your Stone by Mumford & Sons
Favorite book: That came out this year? The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides, and it’s a very close second to my favorite book(s) I read at all this year, The Hunger Games. I cannot WAIT for the movie!!!
Favorite DW column: This sounds so narcissistic, but it isn’t how I mean it: when I wrote in about my roommate’s douchey boyfriend (she’s still with him, btw, sigh). Everyone was so wonderfully supportive and offered up so much great advice, I just felt like such a part of this community – it’s great having a bunch of people whom I’ve never met who worry for me just as much as anyone who’s in my day-to-day life.
Favorite moment: Toss-up – when Painted Dude and I finally got our living room where we want it, and it looked like a real house, and then closing night of my theatre kids’ first show this year – we were backstage and have circle time, and they all knew exactly what to do and loved every second and were so proud of themselves. It was this moment of, “Oh yeah, this is why I do this.”
Favorite TV shows: BBC’s Sherlock, The Walking Dead
Favorite new thing: My apartment!!! Painted Dude and I have like a million boxes to unpack, but it’s so cute and classy and US – all our stuff matches so well it’s kind of bizarre.
Favorite discovery: Parisians are a completely charming people. I’d heard such horror stories, and then I met some truly kind and funny people while I was there.
Favorite food: New food? I discovered roti, which is a Malaysian/Indian style bread. It has the shape and thickness of a tortilla and the taste and texture of a croissant. Oh, also, escargots are amazing (thank you, Paris!)
Favorite drink: I’ve gotten way more into red wine this year than I ever have – turns out I LOOOOOVE Shiraz!

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hate that I missed the open threads over the last few days – I was busy hauling a couch up to the third floor of my apartment building!

Favorite Book: A dystopian manga version of Macbeth my sister got me.

Favorite Dear Wendy column: The one about the guard dogs & the meth lab [citation needed].

Favorite moment: Celebrating my birthday with my family for the first time in 9 years (they wanted to, but I wasn’t there yet. It rocked.)

Favorite TV show: Again, I didn’t see anything made this year, so I’ll go with the X-Men Animated Series marathon my sis & I had in July.

Favorite new thing: My glasses (look, mom, I don’t run into the other kids anymore!)

    “Oceanside” by The Decemberists
“The Way You Wear Your Head” by Nada Surf
“Here Comes Your Man” by Pixies

Favorite Dear Wendy column: I just like the updates. It’s nice to know what advice the LW’s took and how everything turned out.

Favorite moment: Watching my little sister get married. She lives in Western NY, I live in VA, our brother lives in Portland and our mother lives in AZ, along with the rest of her side of the family (where we are all from orig). We were all able to make the trip for the wedding, with our grandpa who gave her away. Our dad passed away 20 years to the day of the wedding (April 16th). It was such a special day. Having all of us there; I hadn’t seen my mom or grandpa in five years. It was just wonderful.

Favorite TV show: Community! I hadn’t really watched it before, but my boyfriend loves it, so I decided to give it a try. Holy shit. It is HILARIOUS! The last show they did this year (the Christmas episode) was just… let’s just say we have it recorded and have watched it about 20 times in the last 2+ weeks. Watch: Baby Boomer Santa song

Favorite new thing: My new job! I had been unemployed since January and had a couple part time jobs during the summer until last month. I now finally have a full-time job and it’s such a load of my shoulders 🙂

Favorite discovery: The moment I realized that if my boyfriend asked me to marry him, I’d say yes. It kind of hit me one day. Now, he just needs to get on that!

Favorite food: My 2011 favorite food is BY FAR Bonefish Grill’s Bang Bang Shrimp. My boyfriend took me there on advice from his friend for Valentine’s Day. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Favorite Movie: Crazy, Stupid, Love. I love me some Ryan Gosling.

Favorite Songs: “Sparks Fly” by Taylor Swift. I don’t care if it makes me lame…I love T-Swift and that song makes me jam out in my car every time I hear it!

Favorite book: The Help. Loved it, loved the movie.

Favorite Dear Wendy column: Maybe the one where the girl whose boyfriend disappeared for weeks and he had guard dogs and no phone and it was just…supremely sketchy.

Favorite moment: Moving in to my first grown up apartment.

Favorite TV shows: Castle (seriously…Nathan Fillion is my dream man), New Girl, Terra Nova (corny…but there’s so much hunky male eye candy), Modern Family, Sister Wives, and all the Sex & The City re-runs currently on E!

Favorite New Thing: My iPad2! It’s my first Apple product, and I’m in love.

Favorite discovery: That just because nothing seems “wrong,” doesn’t mean that a relationship is right. It took me a long time to come to terms with that, and then go through with a break-up, and sometimes I can’t believe that I did it and came out OK.

Favorite Food: I’ve been cooking a lot in my new apartment, and I love trying new recipes. I make this fruited curry chicken salad that is the BOMB, chicken pot pie, salmon prepared many different ways, and butternut squash – soup, roasted – it’s great any way you make it! Oh and my homemade pineapple, italian sausage and onion pizza…mmmm.

Favorite drink: I’ve recently discovered that red wine can be good (sorry Addie…), as I was previously more of a white drinker. I’ve tried a few different Pinot Noirs and have liked them all!

And now you all know that I’m not the least bit high brow when it comes to my varying tastes…give me pop hits that I can jam to and TV that I can zone out to! I love guilty pleasures.

Favorite TV show: Favorite NEW show is "Up All Night" without a doubt.

Favorite discovery: Belly dancing is my favorite new hobby! I do tribal fusion.

Favorite food: Trader Joe's chicken quesadillas – microwaveable (I don't cook much) and SOOO delicious!

Speaking of belly dance, I bought a cute little jingle-jangly skirt wrap thingie which I plan on wearing with my “sexy Santa” bra and thong and I’m gonna put on a little belly dance show for my boo, probably to Elvis’ “Merry Christmas Baby” hahaha. A Christmas belly dance! I felt bad because I couldn’t think of anything “fun” to get him, so… hopefully he’ll appreciate my effort (I’m not that good yet, I’ve only been bellydancing for a few months).

2011 largely sucked for me, so it’s good to remember the positives….

Favorite Movie: Crazy, Stupid Love. I LOVE Emma Stone and I was never a Ryan Gosling fan until I saw this.

Favorite Song(s): “le Internet Medley” (GOOGLE IT! NOW!); also, I rediscovered Bowling for Soup this year and it was life changing.

Favorite Book: I didn’t read much this year that wasn’t related to school, but I just finished “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” and that was pretty powerful.

Favorite Dear Wendy column: The one with the girl who thought her roommate’s boyfriend was going to kill her dog. That one was creepy.

Favorite moment: It’s a tossup: seeing my boyfriend as I got off the plane to California to visit him for the first time since he moved; OR receiving the email that my first article had been accepted for publication!

Favorite TV show: Community and Dr Who, although I’m not liking the Who so much since Matt Smith signed on…

Favorite new thing: The pair of maroon Chucks I got for my birthday, a la the Tenth Doctor (because I am a nerd.)

Favorite discovery: If your psychology professor uses Civilization as an example of a game that people get addicted to, you will immediately download it and spend 30 hours in one week playing it to the detriment of your schoolwork and social life.

Favorite food: Clams, clams, and more clams.

Favorite drink: Whiskey and ginger ale, and lots of them!

    Hey all!

Quick update halfway through Christmas–it’s been good so far, no drama (yet). Been introducing new girl as new girl, family hasn’t been asking questions, it’s been good. I’ll let you all know if shit goes down later at my uncle’s.

Hope everyone is having a great holiday season!

I need to tell someone this: I’m miserable. I went to visit my boyfriend (he lives 300 miles away) for a few days last week and he was scheduled to come out to see me today through Wednesday. He randomly got a horrible toothache and now can’t come here today due to being on medication that may impair his driving. I was counting on being able to spend a good chunk of time around Christmas with him as we’ve done for the past 2 Christmases, so now I’m miserable because he can’t be here this week. I know he needs to take care of himself first and get better, but I’m seriously depressed right now. 🙁 Those of you who are or have been in LDRs know the feeling when plans change last minute and you can’t see your significant other when you’ve been looking forward to it for a long time.

I loved “Just Kids”! Patti Smith is always so poetic and their story was just heartbreaking…
